Does the Hum last forever or does it cut out after a few minutes?Hi I just got a 2011 spyder rt-s and when I shut off the engine there is a low sounding hum all the time does any body know what could be the cause, Thank you Nik.
My dealer gave me a copy of their "What's News" BRP Bulletin dated January 20, 2011. It is published by the Dealer Support Group. It sure would be nice if we could get these and post them on SpyderLovers! Any chance of that happening Lamonster?
2011 Spyder RT with Humming Noise
When prepping 2011 Spyder RT models, you may
notice a faint "humming" or "buzzing" noise coming
from the area under the center glove box after the key
is turned off. The humming will continue for 40 minutes
each time the key is shut off unless interrupted by
another start sequence or an MPI is connected. This is
normal and they will all do it. What you hear is the
Electric Throttle Actuator( ETC) holding the throttle
plates fully closed until the engine cools down. This
feature will allow a normal start up when the engine is
completely heat soaked.
Naw, that's why we have Scotty :2thumbs:
.....or a lot of BS, you never know for certain. :roflblack::agree:Cold facts are OK, But with Scotty we get years of experience and interesting insights.:2thumbs:
is that a "feature" on 2010 and 2011 models?
this low hum thing... or something they modified in the 2011 models
I'm not really trying to be dense or argue with anyone here here.
I just have a difficult time conceptually understanding why the ECU needs to be on for 40 minutes to hold the throttle plates closed.
It may very well be it has to be on for 40 minutes to do some function having to do with hot restarts but ...
I've had a Spyder throttle body in hand and I thought the plates were held closed by a spring. A spring maybe not as robust as on a cable operated mechanism, but robust enough to keep the plates slammed shut.
A shop manual drawing seems to confirm this-

He talked about the draw too and it was very little, less than a remote. No wonder batteries are going dead. 40 minutes? Mine has done this since day one, but it sounds a whole lot more like a high voltage ballast as on HID headlights (or a mosquito buzzing in your ear). But thats just me.:dontknow:
I have had no dead battery issue or any issues for that matter, though.
I'm a happy :spyder2: ryder.
The 2011 works much better. I hope there is an update for the 2010 ECM soon.
