• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Loud "Clunk" When Putting It In Gear

Synthetic

New member
I imagine this is normal but would like reassurance that it is... When I put the brand new RT in first gear from neutral it goes in with a very loud "clunk"....some times it does the same thing going into reverse.....normal or not normal?
Thanks

Yes, as Spyryd said it's normal. When you first start the Spyder it automatically shifts to neutral whether it was in 1, R, N when you shut it off. The first gear you shift into will clunk. I assume too you know that if it's in N when you shut it off you do not have to step on the brake to start it.

:welcome: As others have said, that first start up in the morning will usually leave you with a loud "clunk" when shifted into either first or reverse. Nothing to worry about.

NORMAL NORMAN! We all wondered the same. It's a built in "worry" that BRP put in just to keep us on our toes.

We're not alone....

Most big twins do this. When you are in neutral the gearbox is idle. When you put it in to first, second (manual transmission) or reverse it engages spinning drive with the idle trans. Once you are in gear the gearbox is in motion and all shifts mesh easily because they are all moving. But it is normal....

always a clunk from N to R..... or N to 1st. R to 1st, no clunk.... go figure.
Harley pilots think the clunk is "comforting", me... not so much, but it certainly is normal.

It's not as "clunky" if you let the engine warm up for a minute or two. It starts out at 1100 RPM, and then slows down to it's normal 900 RPM idle revs. It won't clunk much at all if you shift during the lower RPM.

At least that's been my experience.

That's wasting riding time!

Not really wasting any riding time. I let it idle while I do my walk around and put on my helmet. By the time I get in the saddle, the RPMs have gone down to normal. It's not like it takes a long time. :dontknow:

HA! Mine doesn't do this! But then I have a manual transmission! SM6 haha, not all go into Nuetral automatically! But yes, it is the normal noise! I was concerned about this too until I heard another one at the dealer!

I get the pot on my head cinched down while the computer is clearing it's throat... :D
The bike idles only long enough to back out of the garage...

We all have our little pre-ride rituals I suppose:dontknow:. I guess mine is lengthier than yours :2thumbs:

+1 I'm with you Pam. I like the oil to be fully circulated in
the transmission and engine before putting in gear. :D

And after driving for awhile and getting the oil thoroughly warm, nearly all the gears clunk except 5 & 6! Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot, sometimes none at all. :p
