Loud click when letting clutch out

retread

New member
This has been happening for a few weeks now, if I let the clutch out normally, or if I engine brake, then accelerate, there's a loud click out of the rear wheel, any ideas what's causing it? I spent a couple of hours at the dealer today, and short of pulling the wheel, they couldn't find anything.

Thanks,

john

Better check the front sprocket-- pull it and check it----- could be spline wear.... :-(
Or could be rear bearings---- best to check it all out.

You have 23,000 miles I believe --- if you're still on original bearings I'd change them regardless...... all 3 of them.

See if you can hear-it while pushing/pulling the Spyder with the engine turn off.

Like Doc said, Engine off in neutral roll it back and fort and if it's clicking or grinding i would bet it's rear bearings.

Only happens when taking off normally, if I baby it, no noise, I can roll it all over the place, no noise. Rear bearings are less than 2 months old, but the noise is definitly coming from the rear wheel. I'll check the front sprocket, if it's not that (I hope), I'll pull the rear wheel.

I think your front sprocket (and maybe the shaft splines) are shot, John. Could be a wheel or sprocket bearing, but the odds are more likely the front sprocket. Better attend to it ASAP.

:agree: and to see if this is the problem the only way is to change the sprocket with a new one (see also bulletin with torque value). :sour:

If you put the bike in first and have someone roll it forward and back while you watch the sprocket (bolt removed) - look for any movement-- on mine it was very noticeable...... and I originally thought my noise was from the rear too. Hopefully you caught it in time where there's not too much damage.

It doesn't appear to be the front sprocket, pulled the bolt, (it wasn't real tight, an 18 inch breaker moved it easily) bounced it back and forth in first gear, no movement, no noise. Only problem is, I can't find the torque spec for it to put it back in. Anybody?

I pulled the bolt from the sprocket, cleaned things up, rolled the Spyder back and forth in first gear, no wobbles or noise from the sprocket. Replaced the bolt and torqued it to 85'#, went for a ride, hammered the clutch, no click. Evidently, the bolt was loose enough to allow the sprocket to "complain".

Even with the bolt loose, the sprocket should be pretty tight on the shaft. You may have the very beginnings of sprocket/shaft wear. Be sure and mark an "X" on the bolt to indicate that it has been retorqued as required by the service bulletin.

But did you pull the sprocket and clean and inspect the splines?

Have to retreive my jack, probably Tuesday. I'm not putting it back together till it's checked.

Quick update on the click...Spyder has been to the dealer twice, they pulled the front sprocket and it's good, they checked the rear bearings and they're good, somehow, the click is gone, but the rear sprocket is running out (wobbling), they mounted a different one, it wobbles too. They called BRP last week, no answer yet. I'm heading down there today, got another hub to try. Any Ideas, anybody?
thanks,

john

The wobble usually means bearings, or worst case worn main shaft :dontknow::dontknow:

If they took apart the rear hub to check the bearings, they might not have gotten the sprocket/hub seated right.

Thanks, Scotty, I was talking with a friend of mine over by Pontiac, and he said if the cush drive is not seated properly, everything that's happening will. You confirmed it for me. It's too late to get to the dealer today, but I'll be there when they open tomorrow.:doorag:
