• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. lost spyder's rear fender...

yes that is THE concern.
i don't wanna spray vehicles behind me but we don't get much rain here AND how much ryding in rain will i do plus most crotch rockets don't have rear fenders right?
i wonder if i will get pulled over for not having a rear fender to shed water.
Roaddog keeps telling me if I pull off the fenders I'll get pulled over but the cops are the least of my worries...I'm more worried about getting water where it shouldn't be. Well if you don't ride much in the rain and do it up! We go out of state most every weekend and sometimes we get caught in it so not sure if I want water in the airbox or a fountain going up my back either.:dontknow:

Very little water spray that I've noticed. When it's downpouring, my whole body gets drenched anyways. :sour:

When I was contemplating removing my fender, dltang and I looked up different state's laws on fenders and I can't recall a single state that required fenders on motorcycles, definitely not the rear fender. Some are picky about how and where you mount the license plate though.

If you ride with Deb, nobody will care.

Didn't you mount yours in some ditch in Missouri? None of the police on your cross country trip seemed to mind that. Of course, you had Deb ( a Jedi Master of the Force ) with you and that helped. ( though, not so much with the trunk latch, but she was tired that night )

Back to the "lost" fender for a moment. I was wondering if putting something like strips of inner tube rubber between the rear fender and the mounts might lessen the wear, flex, bad karma, or whatever is going on in there!

Your thoughts, opinions, etc.

The way the weather has been here in the Northeast, if I chose not to ride on the rainy days, I wouldn't have many miles on the Spyder this year! :(

Yeah, June was a mess huh? We've got a day of rain coming in today. Glad we got out yesterday. I won't go out if it's going to rain but if we get caught in it then we just pull over and put on the rainsuits (except for the time we got caught on Super 7 in a major lightning storm) - we crouched in a ditch for what seemed like forever. Just praying not to get fried by lightning.

I have Ken's plate relocator...
lost the rear fender...
Love the look...
I do get some splash on the rear of the bike when I run through puddles...

If I regularly rode in the rain... I would put it back on... but this is a fair weather machine for me...

That piece of metal which holds the back fender is pretty substencial. Are you sure nothing hit your back fender prior to this happening?

I agree there's a good sized piece of metal under the fender but the mounting brackets are what's breaking and those are thin sheet metal with the break occurring right at a bend (natural weak point) in the metal.

my dealer had same suspicion at first till they saw my fender and there was no damage to it.:D they did not asked me another question about how this happened.

I don't think the police care if you have a rear fender or not as long as your displaying a license plate properly. Lots of sport and cruiser bikes have minimal or no rear fenders to speak of. Just my .02.

My license plate frame was getting a beaten by all the wind from me doing 80 and 90mph. After I got my bike painted, the paint was starting to crack because it was moving so much. The metal frame does not go down to the bottom of the fender to give support for the license plate frame. After losing a few screws and bolts, I did this and now I don't have any problems.

Could help, but could just as easily make it worse. This is an apparent metal fatigue situation, amplified by the vibration and bouncing of the suspension. Breaks are developing wherever the metal was bent or formed sharply, so the alloy could also be a factor. When even the tab on the swingarm, which secures the fender bracket to the swingarm breaks, something is very wrong with the engineering.

I think everyone so far who's had problems have been running aftermarket tires with double the load rating and/or running higher than recommended pressures.
