lost spyder's rear fender...

Rear Fender

I think everyone so far who's had problems have been running aftermarket tires with double the load rating and/or running higher than recommended pressures.

I had the stock tire at recommended pressure and at 18,000 miles my rear brackets cracked. There was some evidence that the I7 / Givi side bags brackets were hitting the rear fender brackets. I would suggest that people check their rear fender brackets periodically.

My 17 rack was striking the fender support arm until I modified it. If you have a luggage rack, and especially if you sometimes have a passenger, check for scratches on the paint of the support arms. This may affect your fender bracket. If this is the case, check my post "rack attack" for my solution. Sorry, you will have to look for it as I don't know how to transfer you.

RAKNIDs go and return & bad vibes

+I'm nearing 17k, but had the fender & assembly replaced midway after a brain dead co-worker backed into the bike.

I've lost one RAKNID vanity plate due to the vibes. Al at Dutchess Rec asked, "Where's your plate?", and I initially didn't understand what he was talking about. When we realized that all that were left were pieces of the corners, I fashioned a cardboard classic to get the hour drive home, and didn't get pulled over. My eyes were peeled, however, to the roadway I'd travelled enroute to see if I found it. (I've been lucky with lost items before.) No luck, though.

Getting replacement tags was a terrible inconvenience because RAKNID's escape occurred during the annual renewal period, and I needed to get a new plate number & plate, then transfer it to the already-established vanity (instead of just renewing the vanity), AND file a DMV form signed by an LEO. No biggie on the latter, but the process shouldn't be so convoluted, especially when you're not claiming a theft.

I'll keep an eye on the structure, but in the interim, here's how I've mounted my plate, inside a ~30-year old windowed plate frame (minus the whoopie lights that came with it...)

Ride on.

Ya my I-7 bag bracket has hit the fender. I adjusted the rear spring to Max to prevent this in the future I hope.

I swung by the dealer today and they installed shiny new rear fender along with new brackets(Fender was scraped by the torn bracket). They were saying they have to remove the whole front end, trunk and all to replace hydralic something something (it's for se5 only on 12k service list) so I had go and disconnect the sound system for them. It seems like too much work for routine maintenance. Y gasket looked bad even thou it only had 2500 miles on them.

Upgraded?

I found out that my rear fender mounts are cracking as has been discussed here. I recalled reading that they were being replaced under warranty so I rang my dealer. He has just rung to say that the replacement parts are on their way.

I've read a lot of discussion about design, annealing after bending and additional bracing. Does anyone know whether the replacement parts have been upgraded?

If not, I intend to brace the replacement parts. Has anyone done this already?

Cheers;

Pogo (13000km and still learning)

I hear that!

Very little water spray that I've noticed. When it's downpouring, my whole body gets drenched anyways. :sour:

.
There is a large rooster tail behind you for the other drivers and you don't have to be tail gating either, I just want you to know. :yikes:

I don't think he meant that he LOST the rear fender--- just that he 'lost' it--- as in it is broken to the point of no longer useable. It would make a pretty good noise falling off--- and being drug by the cables to the light--- but I suppose it could happen.

Mine has the starting signs of the same problem.

Brian and deb both have the same problem.

Of all places they probably should have used plastic instead of metal---- looks like this was it!

Fire,

I think if it came off while riding on the highway, you'd never know...I wouldn't hear it over my hindle and wind noise...

My license plate frame was getting a beaten by all the wind from me doing 80 and 90mph. After I got my bike painted, the paint was starting to crack because it was moving so much. The metal frame does not go down to the bottom of the fender to give support for the license plate frame. After losing a few screws and bolts, I did this and now I don't have any problems.

Don't like that look at all...however, it might be a better option for keeping the bike together...

We nearly lost our rear fender too on our way out from California to Tennessee. We just lost our license plate instead but had to remove the brackets and rear fender while we were in TN for our ride home back to CA.... and boy it sucked when it rained!!! But I really do love the look of the rear without the fender with the Corbin bags on either side. :D

The brackets cracked and broke very similar to the way shown in the above photos.

I am working on a trunk install where I will work a way to mount a license plate there. The trunk should also keep most of the water off the passenger when riding in the rain....

... more to come!
