Lost My RT Oil Panel

Somewhere between western KY and Poplur Bluff Mo on a 10 day trip, my Oil Panel dissapeared. How it could blow off without my knowing is beyond me, but it did. When I get home I'll have to order a new one. Any idea what one costs?

If any of you find a red one out that way, let me know. :ohyea:

Sorry I'm very late in responding to this thread but I've been out of pocket for a while. Just want to tell you that BRP did, in fact, warranty my panel which blew off. I lost the right side panel which blew off shortly after I picked it up new and, like you, I never knew when it blew off. The dealer assumed the responsibility for that one assuming that it had not been set up properly. The left side (oil side) panel blew off some time later and my wife, riding passenger, saw it that time. We went back and found it but it was damaged beyond repair. I told the service manager at the dealership that I felt it should be covered under warranty in any case since there was an obvious problem in securing the panel and it's one which must be removed over and over to check the oil. He agreed and filed a warranty complaint with BRP which they honored without question. Took a couple of weeks to get the panel in but I continued to ride it in the meantime. Since then, BRP has recommended that the grommets be glued into place and I've had no problems since. I follow the exact same procedure that Scotty does in installing the panel.

Here is a picture of my panel I don't see a hook anywhere. Do you?

Can't really tell from your picture, but it would be in the bottom right corner of your picture if it existed. It certainly looks like it could be gone. It is not much of a hook, more of a tab. It is also possible that it has been broken off. Look closely in that area for a rough edge that would indicate that the tab broke off. There were reports of some that did. There are also several variations of the panel, so yours may be one of the pre-production varieties.

2010 RT oil panel...

Here you can plainly see the front hook on the 2010 RT oil panel. This is the hook that needs to be latched around the filter housing to prevent air from popping the panel off of the pins.

Thanks for the picture. I definitely do not have one on the oil side of the Spyder. I only have 3 pins and my velcro. However, I took off the right side cover and I do have a hook there. Funny thing is that the right side was the one that always looked like it was going to fly off and the left side one looked pretty glued on. My velcro seems to be doing the job for me.

Right now I'm in Eureka Springs Ar till sat and my buddy's SE Rt is having limp mode/throttle body issues. For some reason, once warm, it runs ok, but sitting overnite it shows the limp mode in the morning. Gonna call the Little Rock dealer in the morn and decide what we can do with it. I had to drive it for him home this evening after we got out of a show and the temps had drastically fallen. Once in 1st gear, with a little throttle, it ran the two miles back to our motel, but the RPM was limited and the engine died at one point. Long haul to Little Rock and not sure we can make it in limp mode or not. He doesn't have the extended warranty with road service.

Call Terry Brown @ Bradford Marine in Springdale, Arkansas (about 45 miles from you via Highway 62 West to Highway 71 Business) at (479-750-1200) They should be able to get you in and hook you up on BUDS.
Regards,
Rich

For what it's worth ...

... I use just a little Lubriplate on my pins before I slide things together and I've never displaced any grommets.

I also use it on all the latches ... along with some CRC Heavy-duty silicone spray for all the movable stuff. It doesn't have the hygroscopic characteristics as WD-40 has.

I have a basic RT.

Looking back over the other pics in this thread, I noticed that mine seems to be the only RT with the "front hook". Why in the world did BRP eliminate this hook on the newer models? The hook was the best insurance to keep these panels where they belong... on the Spyder!

Rich, thanks for feedback on the dealer in Ar but I didn't get back on the Motel computer to see this till today, saturday, when we got home. By then, we had figured how to warm it up, wait awhile, and it would run normally for rest of the day. However, on thursday nite, while we were at the local stage show in Eureka Sp, the temps were falling and it was down to about 46-50F by time we got out and it went into its 'snap, crack, pop" mode. I rode it back to Motel, about 2 miles as by friend was too nervous with it doing that. We left the next morning and headed back east towards NC.

Strange. I also have an early model dealer demo.
I lost my panel due to

I did not have the hook you show. The panels were replaced under warranty and the new ones have those same hooks as yours. Great improvement. Why BRP took them out is beyond me.

I also saw a post somewhere that showed some type of mechanism that mechanically held the grommet in place, but that seems to be gone also.

My front panel is a little loose. I've lost the lower front grommet again, despite gluing it in, but I'm not in a panic because of the hook on the panel. I'll get a new grommet this weekend.

The new panel I ordered a week and half ago came yesterday. The chrome piece with "Can Am" on it came in a package containing both left and right. I only needed the left side, so on the premise that I won't also lose the right side panel I'm gonna put the Chrome piece up for sale in case any of you need it.
See the for sale section.

Front hook...

If you have the illusive front hook, Remember!
Front top pin first.
Rotate, and engage hook.
Lower front pin.
Rear pin.
Finally, top rear snap-over.

The Oil panel I lost, as well as the new panel, have a hook on the top right and one grommet insert on lower right. The front side has the two grommets inserts. I think one reason it came off may be that I used too much lube on the rubber grommets. Making darn sure the new one goes on snug and am considering some method such as a hook epoxied on the panel and a spring or small bungie to hold the panel tighter.

Your theory is certainly a possibility. That is why I only use water (spit) as a lubricant. It dries quickly, allowing the grommets to hold morew securely. It is also very important to make sure the top, rear hook is engaged, and none of the grommets has started to push through. I tug gently at each corner after installing the panel. If any corner moves appreciably, the panel should be removed to find the problem.

As someone stated earlier, Air Wings are a good insurance policy for not losing your side panel. They also work great to cool when it's hot and dry when it rains.

I did a post sometime ago Ref (My Grommet fix )

(Securing the Panels)

The panels have remained secure all this time and this included a 1,126 Mile trip from the UK to Germany in Sept this year

Hope this information is helpful - It appears even 2011 Models are prone to loosing the odd panel
