Limited Front Shocks Frozen Adjusters

Has anyone had a problem with their front shocks? Mine are frozen and can't be adjusted. Tech tried, and gave up. They opened a case with BRP. Now we wait. :hun: Tom :spyder:

These adjusters are threaded rings on the shocks to vary the compression on the springs, right? If so, and it's the threads that are frozen, I would recommend PB Blaster. Spray it on the threads and allow it to soak in. It may take a couple of applications but that stuff rarely fails to loosen stuck bolts. Well worth trying if it hasn't been yet.

Interesting. ...

Have never seen this happen. Did they loosen the bottom ring first then adjust with the top one..?? Seeing as you should tighten them against each other to lock them in place you cannot move both at the same time. If too tight you need two spanner wrenches to seperately the two rings....:dontknow:

Can-Am specs for the 2016 F3 Limited indicate you have Sachs Big Bore shocks. Do the Sachs shocks have preload adjustment?
I know the F3 & F3s come with Fox shocks which have threaded adjustment, but I didn't think the Sachs shocks did.

They have threaded adjusters on the bottom of the shocks. They are frozen is all they said. The service writer asked if I wanted to ok 3-4 hours to remove the shocks to "try" to free them up. $400 plus tax? Elka shocks run $700 brand new. I told them it's a warranty issue, BRP needs to pay. So, a case was opened. Now waiting for an answer. :yikes: Tom :spyder:

Well if that's the case, it's definitely a warranty issue. My dealer wouldn't even question it. They'd have them loose or new shocks on the way!

I had this issue on a new Yamaha snowmobile once and Yamaha replaced the shocks. The shock threads were cross threaded.
If shocks have threaded adjusters it usually means the shock body is aluminum and the adjuster is steel. They can become cross threaded very easily, and if that happens they can almost "weld" together. You'll never get them apart!

Based on the parts diagram price, the Limited shocks are only $99.99 and The F3 & F3s shocks are $309.99. That would indicate to me that they are not aluminum body shocks, so I don't know if that's the problem.

Unfortunately, there is always potential for the BS factor. Have you lifted the Spyder, used some lubricant on the threads and used 2 spanner wrenches as suggested above to see if they are actually frozen?

 That's a good point, Ron...
Tom,
Can you get the bike off the ground, and give it a try? :dontknow:
Or can you bring it up to Netzley's???

Dealer called this afternoon. BRP ok'd the labor to remove the shocks to free up the adjusters. And reinstall. I have no doubts they can free them up. Just wanted BRP to pay to do it. This dealership is a strictly by the book one. I still need to find a spanner wrench to do this. The one I have won't fit. :banghead: Now, If only BRP can figure out the radio. :banghead: Their answer was a joke! :roflblack: MUSHU goes back on Monday. Tom :spyder:

I just looked at 500 wrenches. What wording did you use? None say they fit the Can Am's. Just about every other make is mentioned. I have SACH shocks on the limited. Those aren't mentioned at all. :dontknow: Very confusing to this old fart. :roflblack: Tom :spyder:

They are universal as the nut on the shock is 60.75mm dia you really need 2 off them because you have to hold the top one and undo the bottom with the wheels off the ground, I modified the one I kept from my RS and I did a naughty thing I held the top nut with large poly grips and used the modified RS C spanner to undo the bottom they are tight. Yet another dealer trying to rip off a customer. Even if they DID need to remove and replace the shocks, its less than a hour job.

THANK YOU!

Thank you for saying this....I thought I'd lost my touch! I tried a couple months ago to adjust the pre-load on my front shocks (2015 F3-S), and after a day of trying different things, gave up!
First I marked a reference line on the shock and the adjusting nut with a gold magic marker. Then I tried the shock-adjusting tool from my Polaris Ranger...it fit, but wouldn't budge the lock nut...I thought it was just the short handle on the adjusting tool...not enough leverage.
I then tried another adjusting tool I had on hand, but it wouldn't fit enough to suit me. So I tried a drift and brass hammer....nothing!

Rather than booger up the locking nut, and not wanting to use heat to break up any loktite that might be there, I gave up. Never thought that kind of thing could defeat me!

Please keep us informed if BRP gives you some relief.

jc he is not trying to rip me off. The book rate is what they go on. Remove and reinstall 2 shocks is 3 hours. BY THE BOOK. Add in time to free them up. It gets to the 4 hours they wanted from me. I personally saw 2 shocks removed and replaced in less than an hour on a RT. I just wanted BRP to foot the bill not me. This dealer has one of the top tech's in the country as far as I'm concerned. He's that good. Tom :spyder:
