Lamont and the splash pan removal question

Just an update to this post. I've had to do three oil changes on this trip alone and here's a tip that will save you or your dealer a ton of time and reduce the risk of damaging your body panels every time you change oil.

On my RS I took the splash pans off along time ago. I did that to help with the heat issue but it also makes it easier to change your oil. When I changed my oil in San Diego this trip I did the same thing so when I had my oil changed at Cow Town I was able to just pull the one panel to access the oil tank and that's it, no tools needed other than to pull the drain plugs and filter. The guys at Cow Town loved that and are going to leave that panel off from now on. Once again it will give the heat another place to go.

So when you change your oil next time consider leaving this splash pan off.

Lamont, did you take off the splash pans from both sides for heat control, or just the one as you posted in your post below?

Did you notice any difference in how your RT ran? Was there more road crap getting kicked up into the Tupperware? Did you notice any changes in sound or (less likely) aerodynamic drag...

No, the left side was removed to speed up the oil changes and let some heat out, the right side was removed to let heat out because I blocked of the top vent. There's no way my poor hearing is going to notice anything.

Gotcha! I'll leave the right panel in place then since I'm happy with the heat ourput... (Took the left one off a couple of weeks ago...)
Thanks!

Lamont,

Do you happen tp have a pic of your RS with the panel off so I can see exactly what it looks like when off, and also, how much heat reduction did you experience if you don't mind me askin?

I can't find any pics right now. As far as heat goes it's been so long since I took them off I can't remember, that was back in 2007. Try it and see for yourself and if you don't like it put them back on. :doorag:

Although I doubt it matters taking them off (Lamont is proof enough of that), one option you can do is cut a hole in the pan and then reinstall. I used a 4 inch hole cutter (for cutting holes for dryer ducts) and then just reinstalled.

If you look under the Spyder, specifically under the engine compartment, you'll see one horizontal panel under the left side and one under the right side. The left side has to be removed anytime you do an oil change. The right side mirrors the one on the left. These two panels are the ones about which we are talking...

I am with you now. Thanks:thumbup:

Lamont took off the right side for heat control and the left side to make oil changes much easier.

Thank you for the reply. I was going to ask next if there were any problems with having the shields off, but that too was answered. I was installing mt highway pegs when I remembered Lamonts posting about removing them, but put them back on since I was not posative. I will now remove them.

Taking bottom panels off question on a RS

I took the right bottom panel off for heat isues but when I took the left one off the side panel became unstable. I did not want the side panel to be flopping around so I put the bottom panel back on. Can you take all the panels off?

Yes you can take off both bottom splash pans. Just put the bold back in that secures the side panel.
