• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

LA Trip Travel Blog

As you know, I purchased a shorty helmet just to wear for this trip. I have since learned some valuable lessons. Lesson number 1, rain hurts like a son of a gun at 70 miles per hour. I thought I was being attached by needles. Lesson #2, never yawn while riding at 70 miles an hour with a shorty helmet. This is directly related to lesson #3, you can not spit that well riding 70 miles per hour. Oh yeah, one other thing, not having anything to do with the helmet but it is a distant relative. If you are riding with long sleeve, wear gloves. I have the most ridiculous than line you have ever seen. I hope you all got a grin and a chuckle at my expense.

dltang, just a thought but how hard would it be to switch the trailer to Brian bike, it might hide his naked rear.

It would be a great idea but my bike is the one wired for the trailers. If it was just a matter of moving the hitch, it would be something to think about. We have the registration and proof of insurance if something happens. We called our Secretary of State office and we can only replace the plate in person. Go figure anyone would have an emergency situation out of state.

Thank you and I did. I believe I fell asleep almost as fast as my head hit the pillow. I didn't even hear the train which seems to travel through about every half hour now that I'm awake. See you in a couple of days.

Official blog of Monday 6/22/09

It is Wednesday morning and I am just now able to have enough time and energy to put some of our journey in writing. We departed our home in Grand Blanc, MI at about 3:50 a.m. Our first priority, THE BANNER!, so off toward Indianapolis we go. This early in the trip what could possibly go wrong. Oh let's see, how about torrential down-pouring rain just outside of Indianapolis. Like so many bikers before us, we pulled under the overpass on the highway to put our rain gear on. This is also when I learned my 1st lesson with my shorty helmet. Rain hurts at 70 miles an hour. The next little delay had to do with the construction signs just as we were entering Indianapolis. You see TrickieDick had given me clear instructions as to how to get to our meeting point, exit 31 off I-465 at the Shell station on 96th St and Meridian. How hard could that be? I was about to find out. You see, the signs said long delays and expect back ups on west I-465. Then it hit me, there was an exit for 96th street just north of I-465. I was brilliant, I would just take 96th street west to Meridian and get to the Shell and meet with the Indiana Spyder Group. My brilliance faded fast as we started coming upon residential area and a round-a-bout where 96th street ended abruptly. Brian new something was up when I went in full circle on the round about and pulled into a driveway to figure out just exactly where we were. Well, the GPS came in handy and we did get to the Shell station. Of course now it was raining even harder and we can barely see, but as we pulled in, there they were, our Indiana Spyder Friends. I have to tell you what I learned about Indiana Spyder Ryders. They have heart. Those folks tried to get the banner from OH earlier last week and it was canceled. When they finally got it (in the mail no less) they tried to pull off their signing get together but mother nature just would not help. Only a few of them were able to meet due to more storms on Thursday. Then Retread took the banner with him and had a few others sign it and made sure it got back to TrickieDick for the hand off. Then those that met us Monday had to ride through the rain again. Also, Tina presented both Brian and I with a Guardian Bell for our spyders. Just really nice folks. I hope to meet them again and ride with them in some nicer weather. About now, we are running close to 45 minutes behind schedule and I know there is at least one SpyderLover waiting to meet us in Effingham IL........(to be continued)

The saga continues..

...Time to roll towards Effingham, IL for our next meet up. jima1153 had contacted me by PM that he would meet us at our fuel stop in Effingham. I didn't have his phone number to contact him so I was hoping he would still be there even though we were running behind schedule. The other dilemma I had was that I wasn't sure we were going to make it all the way to Effingham for fuel or if we would have to stop first. It is almost two hours from Indy to Effingham and we would be cutting it close. Well about 20 miles east of Effingham, sitting on an overpass is a very tall man with a camera and a beautiful Black Phantom Spyder. We noticed this awesome site immediately and waved and gave the ole :2thumbs:. We pulled to the side of the highway and waited for Jim to catch us. There we are on the side of I-70 saying hello and shaking hands. Jim told us where the closed gas station was and said he would ride over with us for his turn signing the SpyderLovers banner. Now I have to tell you all, bjt is 6'4" and Jim makes him look short. Check out the photos of the banner signing. Look forward to the blog on the Missouri Spyder Express......

The Missouri Spyder Express

At long last, I am able to continue this blog for your reading pleasure.....Just as we were leaving Effingham, I called BMW Gene and told him we were about 2 hours or so away from St. Louis. He informed me that he had a lot of calls to make as there were many Missouri SpyderLovers that wanted to be part of the "Spyder Express" First of all, let me tell you that MO Lee mentioned this in passing on the MO forum and BMW Gene jumped on it and before we knew it, we had a planned escorted ride through Missouri. As we were entering MO, we were praying for some more of that rain. It was HOT!! and HUMID!! 97 degrees and probably 97% humidity. As we came off the exit ramp to our planned meeting spot, there was the whole group just a waving and taking pictures. I am so very impressed with the Missouri SpyderLovers. What a generous and giving group. When we got there, Joe (sorry Joe, I don't know your screen name) told us to go eat and he would fill our Spyders with gas for us. Then Gene, (BMWGene) after giving me a hugh welcome hug, hustled us inside out of the heat for a lunch that he had purchased for us and a couple of bottles of water each. I almost forgot to tell you, when Gene called me, he warned me about the "wind chill factor" Hearing the question mark in my voice, he started laughing and told me the MO windchill was 103. Anyway, I digress. When the fuel was pumped, Joe came and I went over to pay and was told, it was all taken care of. This group just kept amazing me over and over again. Then Gene comes up with a couple of gallon size zip lock bags with goodies inside. His wife, Virgina I think her name was wanted us to have the bags to keep ice in, to put under our coats. How very thoughtful. Inside each of these bags in the mean time, was a Can-AM T-shirt, I key chain that had a photo of Brian and me on one side and a photo of the Missouri SpyderLovers on the other side. There was also some various other goodies inside as well. I need to lay it all out and take a picture to add to this blog for everyone. Just when you didn't think it could get any better, BMWGene does it again. He bought me a pair of glasses to wear with my new Shorty helmet because he didn't think I would have had time to get any for myself yet. He was right. What a sweetheart.

After we finished eating and gulping some fluids, we had the official banner signing. Then of course we had to have the group photo for posterity..LOL. But then, the real Spyder Express started. We all headed west on I-44. Terri and Tina could only drive for a short ways and then had to exit. That left BMWGene, Joe, Brian and me. Gene drove as far as Cuba, MO then he had to exit. We really wanted to stop in to CowTown, the Spyder Dealer in Cuba, but time just did not allow. So Joe continued as our escort as far as Waynesville. At this point, as he was exiting, MO Lee was driving down the on ramp to pick us up and continue with our ride across the state.

Of course, as with any long trip, what would it be without a mishap or two. Brian pulled up along side of me, giving me the sign for trouble. I pulled over ad he told me his license plate had just flown off his spyder. We went up the the next exit and I pulled into a visitors center to wait while Lee and Brian went back to see if they could find the plate. Hey, why should we all go play on the highway? Anyway, no such luck. What are you gonna do, so we continued on, without the license plate. Lee traveled as far as Springfield with us and that is where we said goodbye to the wonderful Missouri Spyder Express......Next up, the adventure to our first night's stop.

The very long trip continues..

As sad as it was to leave the MO SpyderLovers, we were not sad to be leaving MO and coming into Oklahoma at long last. Of course, who know that the longest stretch of road in the entire world was route 69 between Big Cabin OK and Checotah, OK. It was pure misery to ride, a myriad of small towns and traffic just added to our pain as we are in the last hour of a 19 1/2 hour day. Brian almost feel asleep riding he said, and it didn't help that it was just pitch black out. As we finally are nearing our destination, we decided to get fuel first as everyone else had already checked in at the camp ground where I had reservations. We figured, they were all fueled up and ready to go and just waiting on us. After answering so many questions again and wolfing down and ice cream, (no dinner) we were off for the final 7 miles of the night. Just as we exited from the highway and on to a very dark deserted road, a blinding light came tooling up. It was Repops (Harvey) on his very well lit and slightly misaimed headlights coming to find us. And it is a good thing too. I don't know if we would have found this place in the dark. I made these reservations from the internet with no other knowledge what so ever. When we arrived, I now know why it was only $37.50 for a cabin that sleeps six. This was not the Taj Mahal by any stretch. Lamont and Ron were already tucked in and sleeping and Harvey told us Lamont wanted to leave by 4:00 am. Wonderful, who needs more than 3 hours of sleep anyway. No really, that is what time I wanted to leave as well. We had just completed our first Iron Butt, (we didn't do the paperwork to make it official but we know) and if we were going to get very far the next day, we had to leave early. We decided that maybe instead of doing back to back Iron Butt rides, we would stop earlier in the night and get some sleep and then cross the desert at night. That made a lot of sense to everyone. Harvey and Forrest already had reservations in Gallup, New Mexico anyway, what the heck, we would all stop there.

This day, took on a life of it's very own. At one point we all thought Forrest was having a spyder problem as he zoomed past everyone at a high rate of speed and then pulled to the side of the expressway. We all pulled off and I got off my bike to find out what was wrong. As it turns out, nothing, he got a call from Docdoru and had to call him back...hmmm. What could possibly happen next you may ask? Oh yeah, for all those people that said don't worry about the extra fuel to take along. Forrest ran out of gas. We were only about 3 miles from the next gas stop and his spyder just quit. He coasted off the road and put some of his reserve in the tank and met the rest of us at the gas station. We wouldn't have even know if a motorcycle hadn't followed us to the gas station to tell us one of our friends pulled of to the side. The lady was very nice, she told me she is sorry, she doesn't speak English very well, they are from Germany and did her best to tell me what was wrong. I kind of figured that is what happened, as I had just checked with him how many bars he had and he told me zero. I think he went through fuel faster than the rest of us due to the size of his trailer but I am not really sure.

We had one more official banner stop to make and that was in Albuquerque, NM. Tom in NM from SpyderLovers and Repops from Arkansas (he was with us and still hadn't signed the banner) Were our last two official banner signers for this trip. Now it was time to finally give back full custody of the banner to Lamont. Brian said he was starting to feel like Frodo in the Lord of the Rings. Just too much pressure being in charge of something as powerful as this SpyderLovers banner. It is now with it's rightful owner until he sends if off with someone else.

And I am sure many of you are wondering about Lamont's posted video and the infamous trailer break in. Well, somewhere along the way, as Brian went to open the trailer to put his coat inside, he said he couldn't get it open. I went over there and I noticed that the lock was turning too far. I told him, it isn't supposed to even be able to go that far. So here we were with 3 or 4 working keys between us and no way to get into our own trailer. Both Lamont and Brian tried shaking and jimming the top but didn't want to bust it. We decided, we will just wait until we stop in Gallup and call Andrew from Bushtec and get some ideas.

Ah, the best laid plans of mice and men and SpyderLovers. At our final fuel stop before Gallup, Ron and Lamont and Brian and I decided, we can keep going. We'll go a little further, one more stop and then get a place to stay and get a good night's sleep. An hour and half later as we are topping off our tanks it hits us, we are less than 2 hours to Flagstaff and about 100 miles away from our back to back Iron Butt rides. After a sit down in Subway, the 4 of us decide, we can do this. And we're off!! Once again 19 hours was winding down as we are looking for any cheap motel. Brian's GPS of course took us into some very dark quite street in a residential area. We circled around, made one last gas stop and headed for the Motel 8, this time we used Lamont's GPS. 2 minutes later we were checking in.

They were very nice there, they let us park our spyders and my trailer right on the bricks at the front door so the desk people could keep an eye on them. But now the fun begins. I still can not get into my trailer. All my stuff is in my trailer. So I pose this question to you all. How may SpyderLovers does it take to break into a Bushtec Trailer? Three, 2 to tear it apart and one to video tape and narrate. For those of you that have been concerned. Please don't be, we can fix the hole with a fiberglass repair kit and a locksmith would not have been able to help. It turns out a pin inside that holds the lock had gotten knocked out of place and the latch could not be moved to unlock the trailer.

With my stuff in my hands, I headed to the room, checked a few messages and laid my head on my pillow and then I think I was just plain out.

I will post tomorrow with the last leg of this very long journey coming into the KOA in Pomona. I have some photos and videos that I will load for your enjoyment as well.

Here is some of the video feed I was able to get while we were traveling today. A word to the wise, if you get motion sickness, do not watch these videos. You see, I was holding my camera by hand on some uneven roads at high rates of speed in the wind. All of this is considered "raw" video. I have not edited any of this, no time, and I put all the clips for each state together.
