There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. Apart from engine braking until you get your speed down to about 6-10 kph, when you can use the Park Brake on the SE's, then NO, there's no alternative to the foot pedal activated brakes. 
But the brakes are a dual circuit system, the rear reservoir on the master cylinder serves the front brakes, while the front reservoir serves the rear brake, so it should be an extremely rare event that sees you entirely without brakes.
