There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. I wear Army Boots, Helmet, Gloves and Jacket ALL the time--
BUT I wear Gym Sweat Pants ALL the time--
Soo I don,t want to fall on a knee?

Ride how you want. We all know the risks, but I'll put my vote on the mesh pants, even after you get the heat issue taken care of. I'm wearing ATGATT here in Phoenix. It gets really hot at stop lights, with all the cars around baking you nice and crispy. I have found the mesh pant and jacket to be way cooler than a pair of jeans, because it dries you off faster. Being fully exposed to the hot wind and sun is way more miserable, than gearing up for me. I do have to flip my modular helmet up though in traffic. There just no air movement there without motion.

The likelihood of falling over on the spyder is of course way less. Padding won't do much when a car crushes your leg, but if you happen to find yourself in a skid on pavement, the gear will definitely save skin. I crashed my pedal bike at 15mph and skid 5 or so feet and woke up in the hospital with huge chunks of flesh missing and knees the size of cantelopes. I can't even get on the spyder without ATGATT.

I guess I'm one of the scared ones, but I would have the nerve to ride any other way. I just know the gear is cooler than no gear, based on the few times I took it around the block after working on it.

I see most people riding without any gear at all, since we don't even have helmet laws here. That's fine by me. The gear just seems to be more than just a safety issue, but obviously most around this state disagree.

You can get some SHIN GUARDS at locAL SPORTING GOOD STORE. keePS HEAT OFF AND GREAT FOR PREVENTING ROAD RASH.

CRAZY BUT WORKS,
TIGER RIDER

Road rash? From what? If you're coming off a Spyder, it's not going to be from dropping it and rolling a few hundred feet around on the highway...if you come off your Spyder, it' more likely you'll be splattered somewhere...and what you wear (aside from the helmet), likely won't be a determining factor in how well you make it...

You should never ride scared...this will lead to more safety issues...I still fail to see the need for cordura or mesh pants when on a spyder...the types of issues on a spyder are not the same as being on a two wheeler (like your bicycle)...

Wearing a helmet is obviously the most important thing to do and studies have shown this...as far as other protective gear goes, it's made for sliding across the road, not for impact trauma...I just don't see a lot of Spyder incidents with people sliding around...you can't drop a Spyder and that's 30-40% of two wheeler accidents...

Mist in the face and on the legs would be awesome. Sign me up when you invent it!

They sell of them that the vendors can carry in Walt Disney World. A spray bottle with a fan... It doesn't seem as if it'd be too difficult to drop a small fishbowl-type pump ( Maybe a 12 volt model designed for baitwells...), into one of them and wire it all up to a handy push-switch! :2thumbs:

It is cooler to wear mesh pants than jeans in the sun or hot weather, and they keep the right leg cooler (especially on an RT). Try them sometime, you'll be surprised...I was. A friend from Florida turn me on to mesh.

As to safety, the Spyder is safer, but you can be tossed onto the ground in an accident...several folks have. The risk is lower, but it is still there. How much a rider is willing to accept is up to him or her.

Well I'll just say I agree, no shorts. But a pair of ALL mesh pants (not overpants) commando underneath beats shorts anyday

That said, Try a fan can from ISCI. Helps a bunch. Spyderpops heat management system also helps in a different way. I even know people who have both all mixed and matched.

Anyhow, on the shorts thing, you were right to assume you'd catch some flak for that, but please don't dismiss it. We're not saying it for OUR sake.

Mike do you remember some one in our group ride did the 160 mile ride in shorts. I could never ride in shorts just gets too hot but Dave M. rides his 2011 RSS using the fan-can does. He siad it gets hot but is OK.

My wife and I wear Speed and Strength mesh jackets with removable waterproof liners but regular old jeans on the bottom. Road rash will heal on your legs but I always felt the back/shoulder/elbow protection was critical when you hit the pavement. I can attest to the back protection having 400lb sport quads flip over backwards on steep ascents while wearing armor. I've landed on rocks flat on my back with the machine on top of me. Not even a scratch or an ache afterwards. Upper body armor is crucial. Shorts? that's pushin' it IMO. Something is always better than nothing I guess and when it's really hot I wear just a plain old pair of lightweight columbia pants with the zip off legs. They're nice for when you get to your destination and want to break out the shorts and get a little freaky!

ATGATT is difficult to follow all the time. I really try. I actually wore jeans a few days as Spyderfest, and worried the whole time. All depends on perspective. I see a lot of the motorcycle trauma in the upstate in SC. been working at trauma centers since 1989. That REALLY gives you a shaded perspective on what to expect. got great mesh kevlar jacket/pants from motoport. a bit pricey, but as cool as its gonna get. Air wings help here in SC in the summer, too. i would love to be comfortable with jeans and a t-shirt, but its not going to happen.

Your personal perspective drives what you do. When my wife was pregnant with our now 18 year old daughter, i did high risk OB ultrasound in Virginia. Most of the patients had something wrong. I was convinced that our daughter would, too, because that is what i saw all day. never told my wife, but i was very relieved when she was born normal.

Previous posters are right. The chances of really getting messed up are very small. We all have the freedom to choose if we accept that risk. The Crazies are out there. Beware of them.

other coolants

No place hotter than AZ in the summer! I have heard about vests and bandanas that can be soaked in water and then worn on top of T shirts or under other gear. Do these help? Melting in Tucson!

Believe it or not, they actually work better with less ventilation. I know I seem to be the contradictory one here, but using a cooling vest over a t-shirt would dry out way too fast. I use a tight fitting, sweat wicking base, then a shirt followed by cooling vest and vented, but not hugely vented jacket. I also wear Columbia convertible pants under vented riding pants and stay pretty comfortable, except in traffic, but nothing helps there!

The sun will take its toll, so I have as little skin exposed as possible. I'm still waiting fir my fancan, but this combo has been doable. Try it, instead of jeans, shorts and t-shirt and you'll be surprised how much cooler you are in motion.

True no place is hotter, but there is something to be said for the dryness. In Louisiana those vests and bandanas (that work off the latent heat of evaporation) are rendered useless by the high relative humidity.

Since you and others brought it up, we opt for shorts under our FirstGear armored mesh. Same armor rating as the non mesh. We went to Missouri and back last summer in this getup and are going again in 10 days. We found that the mesh kept us cooler whether sitting or moving because the ventilation effect was still there but no direct sun beating down on exposed skin. And has been stated, even in the lowlands of South Carolina, ATGATT.

Protection..."Leather" Road Wind Sleet Rain... Comfort from the heat on your feet. "Highway pegs"

Hot seat "English Riding Saddle Pad" I do all 3.. and they work very well 24/7..

But we are all "DWIP's".. do what I please. Just do it "Responsibly"

I wear shorts 80% of the year on my bike and I live up where the polar bears are. Plus I can't feel my legs, which is good and bad. I have burned my legs because of the spyder and because of ideas I thought would be good, you can find pics of my leg cooked like a sausage when I took the black top pannel off the right side of the bike.

Gear will help you in most situations but you will lose to a Prius, just something to think about, I got friends that NEVER wear lids and I would be dead in either of my mildly serious motorcycle accidents and in both of them the stuff I had on helped and the stuff I didn't caused me a longer recovery or No possible recovery.
