How much tire wear left?

Sorry Jack, I wasn't tendering an opinion or just raising a point to disagree, I was simply pointing out the facts about pneumatic tire pressure vs wear that have been learned & developed in the 160 plus years since they were invented.... & from my experience as a tire & vehicle tester who's logged somewhat more than 4 or more times your stated riding distance (admittedly in just a few less years tho :sour:) actually testing tires in the real world for things like wear patterns, longevity, ride, & handling. High pressures lead to increased wear in the centre of the tread, low pressures tend to wear the outside of the tread more, leaving the centre less worn.

All of what you say is valid. However, based on discussions here over the past 2 plus years or longer it seems that the OEM Kenda rear tire on a Spyder does not conform to the normal inflation behavior of tires. Why? That's what we've tried to figure out. The most logical deduction is that regardless of inflation pressure the OEM Kenda is such a soft tire in the tread and sidewall, and is so wide, that at highway speeds the centerline of the tire tread bulges out from insufficient restraining force. Seems plumb crazy, but the tires have been acting plumb crazy.

I agree with you on all that IdahoMtnSpyder, I was one of the suckers who BRP caught with the really bad 2013 ultra soft compound tires that even with absolutely gentle riding & the greatest of care simply didn't last long.... in my case less than 4000 miles!!! I even went to the extent deconstructing the tire to see if there was anything obviously wrong with it; but no, in pretty much all things they conform with all other motor vehicle pnuematic tires, they are just a lightly constructed tyre of passenger car construction type made with a very soft compound & mounted on a wide rim that has passenger car type beads.... :sour:

But the fact about tire pressures which I've tried to get across is that contrary to what Jack suggested, INCREASING the pressure in your tires is likely to INCREASE the wear in the centre of the tread - and yeah, I agree that in the case of the crappy Kenda's, decreasing your tire pressure probably won't help much to improve tire life either, but as I've said more than once (& I'll para-phrase it once again for you all).... in general, pressures that are too HIGH lead to increased wear in the centre of the tread, while pressures that are too LOW tend to wear the outside of the tread instead, leaving the centre less worn. ;)

tire wear

That's about when I replaced mine. Only had 6400 miles on it but I'm pretty safety conscious and it wasn't worth pushing out the extra 1000 miles or so to me. Plus I didn't want to replace it during the summer riding season if I could help it.

That is indeed conventional tire wisdom. However, the "crappy Kenda's" are a unique case. In addition to what Jack said in his reply to your comments, I believe that it doesn't matter what tire pressure you use in the Kenda - it will ALWAYS wear out in the middle, and you will need to replace the tire long before the outsides of the treads even look worn. I suspect the reason is mainly due to the fact that the Kenda tires have far inferior sidewall construction to that of most modern automotive tires, compounding the effect of the forces that Jack was talking about. And that would be true for both the hard and soft compound Kendas. The Yokahama tire I have now is wearing much more evenly than my original Kenda, and I keep it inflated with 25% more air pressure.

Kenda!

I don't know what you have done to wear it out so fast, but I have over 16,000 on my original Kenda and it looks better than that.
Yes, I would get a new tire posthaste
Pam

Pam, I am so glad to hear you say that. My original (Kenda) tires look good too, with about the same mileage. Thought maybe I was crazy.:dontknow:

Next year I'm gonna get Kendas in the front and maybe a car tire in the back. Or maybe Kendas all around.

Jury's still out on the sanity thing........

Hey Bob, I'd rather see questions about tires than the passel of crap I see posted on this forum that has nothing to do with Spyders or even motorcycles. :banghead:

sandee the old Kenda tires got better mileage. Pre 2014.

tire wear

The problem with the rear kenda tire is it isn't BELTED. When you dismount this tire just grab the sidewalls push in the center of tread with your thumbs you will find no tire there. Centrifical force even at low speeds pushes the center out so your only running on the center 2 inches of the tire regardless of air pressure.
I understand the later OEM tires are better. Mine was gone at 7500 mi. I have a 2014 RT-S SE6. I replaced it with a Sumitomo , rated for 85.000 mi. The size is 215/ 60/15. car tire. Handles better then stock because I now run on the full width of tire instead of just 2 inches of the tire center. Most any car touring tire of this size will work. Just get a good one that's belted. I now have 43,000 on my spyder, The Sumitomo is more or less half worn out. That's 35- or 36,000 on this tire to date. I don't think it,ll go the 85000 but I'm happy. Front tires are original with 43000 on them . Showing some wear now.
Considering an alignment. Where can you get a good lazer alignment around Leesburg FL. area??

:yikes:...Seriously, if you have 43,000 miles on the original Kenda's ......YOU HAVE ...PERFECT ALIGNMENT....Do not let anyone touch your front end ........I'm not kidding :yes::yes:.....Mike
