How much oil do you use?

Yea, I remember reading that a while back... that is some pretty wide standards. I wonder what the minimum is to let the engine out of the factory? This could explain the widely varying oil usage and fuel mileage. JT

I did my first change early at 460 miles before a trip. Now at 1500, I've added 2 ounces of oil, but really didn't feel I HAD to. 2012 RT-S.

Just a blue sky question -

Does anyone know if a difference in oil consumption exists between the SE & SM?

I kind of suspect SEs use a bit more.

Seems to me if the oil is not on your garage floor then it is going out the back door and there is only one way to get to the tail pipe that I know of and it is through the cylinders. I'd bet any differences are in how well the combustion chamber parts fit.

My vote would be RS sm riders use more. wag

Ride it.....oil it....and ride it some more.........cause it is what it is. nojoke

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I picked up my new 2013 RT and, just for practice, checked the oil after 200 miles. I REMOVED 8 oz. of oil. After another 100 mile jaunt, I checked again and the level was still between full and the top of the stick. Took it to the dealer who REMOVED more oil. So I am thinking I have to REMOVE about 6 oz every 5-600 miles to stay on top of things. Then again, I may just keep a close eye on my servicing dealer until I gain confidence. :banghead:

From what I have read, Rotax engines use oil in their lubrication process. Nothing to fear unless you do not replace between oil changes and you let neglect hurt the engine.

The only time I really kept track was on our 6,400 mile run last year. I used between 1/2 and 2/3 quart.

Have been told this by several tech's. If true, it would be nice if we got some kind of official word on it. Till then I'll follow their current guidelines and keep the oil topped off. It's their dance and I'm trying to be a good partner.

To Quote Yogi, You can observe a lot just by looking...?
Or in my case by doing...

Side note, Most manufacturers Do not recommend keeping the oil right at the full line [mark], They recommend keeping it between the upper and lower marks, Especially with dry sump engines....

oops.......some how I think that's the wrong, Yogi!

Perhaps you should have left it over filled and then at the next oil change interval you would be bang on?:dontknow: So in your case you could for sure say "I don't burn any oil between changes?"

oil useage

I might be wrong But I don't add oil unless its low if its between the add and full lines its good to go! 2013 St-S never added any yet...... Check after every 300 to 500 miles. She has 1750 on her now!

Good Ryding

Actually I'm very anal about following the EXACT procedure for checking the oil down to the letter and no skipping, so I discount that reasoning in my case. I think a better guess is manufacturing tolerances and how well your Rotax fits together.

JT
While it is counterintuitive, you may be better off running half a quart low. Yeah I know that does not suit the anal types. But if you fill it to the full mark it will likely blow it up into the air box and what you think is consumption is just positive crankcase blow by. I run a half quart low and don't think about it much. I check every 500-1000 miles and usually add a half quart between 5000 mile oil change intervals. Your mileage may vary.

I had a Harley Sportster, an AMF model, that never needed an oil change! I had to add so much oil in normal operation that after 3,000 miles it had completely new oil! I think it used a quart every 500 miles or 24 hours which ever came first! It cost more in oil use than gas. But it ran smooth, never broke down and was as strong as an ox which was unfortunate since it was a motorcycle.

I must have the best Rotax engine out there... so it seems.

I have only added oil once while on a very long ride (10 hours constant engine running), and it was very little oil... maybe a couple ounces to bring it up to the mid-line; which is where I would bring it up to, rather than to the full line.

Otherwise, mine has not ever needed oil between changes so far (fingers and toes crossed).

I feel oil loss/use might have something to do with how the Spyder is operated... and that may not be in the way some may think is best.
