How much oil do you use?

To Quote Yogi, You can observe a lot just by looking...?
Or in my case by doing...

Side note, Most manufacturers Do not recommend keeping the oil right at the full line [mark], They recommend keeping it between the upper and lower marks, Especially with dry sump engines....

You may be right but it always amazes me that a company like BRP will pay BIG Bucks to a group of engineers to design an engine, which includes a dip stick with a FULL mark on it, then tell owners NOT to fill to the FULL mark. Why not just put the FULL mark where you want it in the 1st place, or engineer the breathing system so it doesn't suck oil into the air box? :banghead:

I fill my Spyder to the FULL mark because that's where I think the engineers that built the thing wanted the oil. I don't get any in the air box because I made a gizmo that takes care of that issue (does that make me an engineer?)

I dunno.....do they let you blow the whistle? ;)

Oil usage

I bought my spyder in 2010 and have just put 40,000 miles on it as of this week. From day one it has used oil. I have had it at the dealer but they say it is normal. I have never that having to carry a quart of oil with me is normal. We changed the oil to Amsoil synthetic oil and on our last time this week it only used 1/2 a quart in a little over 2200 miles. It has made a big difference and we don't have to change the oil as often. Change it ever 5000 miles now. Riding on long trips of 2000 or longer is the only time it uses oil now. Hope it helps.

I just happen to be looking at the manual for my Harley [Apples to oranges?] but here goes;'

A] Below the lower mark:
Add only enough oil until the level reads between the upper and lower marks.

B] Between the upper and lower marks:
It is safe to operate the motorcycle.

C] At [or above] the upper mark:
Drain the oil until the level reads between the upper and lower mark.

My first 600 miles, I used no oil at all. I had to add a half quart, recently to get it to the full line (around 1100 miles) and when I checked yesterday, at just over 1400, it was halfway down from full to add. That works out to 3/4 of a quart over the last 800 miles.

Okay I have been looking through the threads and this one seems most applicable. I checked the oil, has been 1700 miles since last oil change. No oil under the bike, on the engine etc. However after riding the bike around, i parked it on level ground. First off when i removed the dipstick i had air pressure blow out the dipstick hole, not use to that. Secondly no oil on the stick. So i add 1/2 a quart. Screw dip stick back down, still no oil on the stick. I keep adding and checking. at 1.5 quarts in the bike i see it on bottom of the stick. So to get it to full it took 2 quarts, that put it a bit above the full line.

I have never had a vechicle that i had to add oil too between changes. So someone help me explain this please. Currently have 11460 miles on the bike. I bought it used. Talking to previous owner he said 1 quart per thousand miles was normal. Now i am running Amsoil 10-40, live in South Ms, so it gets hot here. It is a 2013 RTS SE5 if that helps. BUt someone...anyone care to enlighten me? I bought this to take across the country but am not having that warm fuzzy feeling right now.

The 998s do seem to have a bit of oil disappear in-between changes... My 2010 would need about 8 to 10 oz about every 1,500 miles... You just need to develop a routine for checking the level regularly.
Now; my 1330... Not a drop used in the 3,200 miles leading up to the break-in servicing!

I found my 08 stopped using oil when i stopped trying to keep the oil level right at the full mark.
I think the full line is too high, And the engine will burn off the first few oz's fast then settle down to about half way on the stick...

:firstplace::agree:

I installed a JT air cleaner about 800 miles ago. When I removed the factory box system didn't see any oil residue. Will take panels apart after while and look inside the JT system to see if any oil is noticed. If there is I read about people putting inline filters to catch the oil and im guessing let it drain back down into the crankcase? If so what inline filter is recommended?

If no oil is seen anywhere around the intake what other ideas are there?

Also as mentioned when i removed the dipstick i got a rish of air...is that normal or doe sit indicate something is plugged off?

I was a bit surprised to add a 1/2 quart of oil after 1500 miles so about 1/3 of a quart per 1000 miles. So I'm wondering how much oil the Rotax normally uses. I have 2,200 miles so it should be broken in by now...

What is your average oil usage per 1000 miles?

Having to add oil between oil changes is something I have not done since I sold my 1981 Chevy Custom Deluxe 10 truck.

Thanks
John
I never added a drop of oil between maintenance in over 100000 miles on 2010, 2012, and 2014 RTs. I have friends that switch to amsoil or other oils (not picking on them) and immediately their bikes started using up the more expensive oil, then when they changed back to the blended synthetic the oil use stopped..
some coincidence.... it would never occur to some that maybe BRP picked the right oil for the rotax engine they use

I had thought of that.... talked with previous owner. he told me it used 1 quart every 1000 miles, and that is with the local dealer doing the oil change using BRP oil. Even though it has called for 10-40 began thinking today about a 20-50...

Sorry to revive a bit of an old thread, but I am noticing that my 2014 STS is using oil. I checked it a couple weeks ago after some riding and it was halfway between add and full. I rode some this last weekend and checked again and it's now on the add line. I am using the BRP blended oil that the dealer put I when the break in change was done at 700 miles. I'm at about 2100 miles. This is a bit disconcerting since I wouldn't think any engine designed in this day and age should be burning oil so early in its lifecycle. My question is for the moment, how much oil approximately is needed to fill it from the add mark?

Are you running the engine to full temp before checking? I check mine after a ride. I let it idle while I get ready and shut it down and check the level within 5min. The 998's do use some oil usually 1/2 qt. between changes for mine. Make sure you DO NOT overfill my take is it will end up in the air filter. Mine is on the add line when cold so do make sure you are checking it right.

Improving With Age

2012 RTL,

About the end of my 3rd oil change at 10,000 miles. It did not require any additional oil this cycle, so it must be broke in. The motor required about a half quart of additional oil in the previous oil cycles. Switched to Amsoil the previous oil change and will continue to use it.:yes::yes:

2012 RS-S I have used royal purple since my first oil change.

I believe the more expensive the oil the more it will use and at almost 15 bucks a quart over 50000 miles that a lot of extra oil.

I add a quart every 3000 miles ant sure these things are made for synthetic oil? :dontknow:

keep the rubber side down. jtpollock

I do check directly after riding within a few minutes so that the engine is up to temp. Like i said, I am not using full synthetic since it has only had its break in service and the dealer put in the BRP blend oil. I guess I will pick up a quart or two today on the way home and add a small amount, ride and then check again. I had planned to change it over to full synthetic on my next oil change though...maybe I should rethink that, although I am not sure it will matter since it is burning the BRP blend oil.

MILE ZERO

WITH JUST OVER 13,000 MILES OF SMILES ON MY FE-S SINCE MARCH 1st...
I HAVE ADDED 'ZERO' OIL AT THIS TIME...
I HAVE HAD 2 OIL CHANGES SINCE NEW, AND CHECK MY OIL REGULARLY, AND HAVEN'T FOUND IT NEEDING ANY AT ALL...

A bunch of years ago; Docdoru posted some leak-down test results on the 998cc Vee-Twin engines. I can't find it, but I recall that these engines seem to be on the "loose" side...
Can anybody find that post? :dontknow:

It just seems crazy to me that in this day an age with the technology we have, that they are still turning out brand new engines that burn oil. If this were 40 or 50 years ago, then ok..but it's not very confidence inspiring at this point in time...
