Help for GPS Mount

I am trying to figure out how to install a mount for a new Zumo 660 that hubby and I will share from my RTS and his Harley.

I am so non-mechanical and need help figuring out if the below RAM base will work on the handlebars, so I can just use his RAM mount the GPS comes with....

http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogRes...d/082065077045066045051052055085/Default.aspx

My RTS is in the shop, so I can't measure anything... that is my excuse!!

Thanks!

My installation...

As I found out, if you buy the 660 over the counter, the harnesses are the same, but the BRP kit comes with a 6-pin connector that hooks in underneath the passenger seat on the right side. This integrates the 660 with the audio system and provides power. Jornie1 just provided me with the part number (710002182) which I ordered and installed.

In my case, I used a combination of Kewl mount and Touratech mount. (I like the Touratech security and not having to remove and hide the 660 at every stop.) After running the harness down through the plug hole, I finished the install by cutting out the necessary amount of the plug at the bottom to accommodate the wire, and then just popped it back in place. I used a simple set of heavy duty wire cutters on the plastic. Looked good enough when I finished. With the mounts in place, it's hard to see anyway. You can do what you suggest and I'm sure a more precise opening can be drilled. Regardless of technique, the entry hole has to be at the edge of the plug because the harness has a fuse holder and splitter which makes it more than just the single wire loom you see going through the hole. Water shouldn't be an issue as water can enter the same cavity via the steering post. Here's some pics...

The Kewl mount comes with two replacement handlebar bolts (a little longer than stock). Simple mounting process. Next step is to attache the 660 bracket to the Touratech mount. Do this BEFORE affixing Touratech to the Kewl mount as those bolts are not really accessible once the Touratech mount has been fixed to the Kewl. The Touratech has a back bracket with a variety of holes. You need to jockey it around until you find the right location. In the 3rd picture, you can see two of the four bolts and location that worked for me. Had to use some larger fender washers to make it work. As you might have guessed, regardless of whether you add the Touratech or not, you should run the harness wires down through the hole BEFORE attaching any of the mounts. Otherwise you'll have a hard, if not impossible time routing the harness wires through that small hole. The snaking procedure mentioned above works well. (I borrowed a large crochet hook from my wife and grabbed the wires as they emerged below, pulling them out to the right. Yes...I did have permission...)

Hope this helps. Like you, I relied heavily on others for advice to get it right.

I would be leery about drilling the handlebar assembly for the mounting screws, although using this type of mount on the bodywork would be possible. Here is another approach.

thank you!

Thanks to all of you for your input. I ordered the Kewlmetal mount and hopefully it will arrive soon.

Another question for you now...
When my Spyder was in for clutch and fuel gauge repair, I asked my dealer to install a 12 volt up in the dash so I can just plug in my GPS charger. He said he couldn't find space up there in my RTS, but the RS have space..I remember seeing a post somewhere where someone put one in near the speakers???

Since he couldn't do the 12v, he just ran a wire from the back and the access is the blank button space under the steering wheel. What do I do with that wire now?

My question now is... how do I rig something up to charge my GPS???? Is there any way to use the 12v I already have in the rear trunk?

Thanks for your help... sorry for my dumb questions, but I know NOTHING about mechanics!:D

BTW...it runs so smooooothly now after the clutch repair! Can't believe it and so pleased.:2thumbs:

I don't remember how much space there is under that switch blank on the switch panel, but if the wires are already there, I suspect there may be room for a Powerlet outlet. They have both straight and right angle units. The angled outlet only needs an inch behind it. They also have spacers to space the outlets away from the surface a bit, to gain even more space behind. Powerlet also makes an adapter cord that can directly power a GPS through the mini USB port. Otherwise you will also need a Powerlet to cigarette adapter.

NancysToy:

The blank spacer in the very middle of the switch panel (you can see it in your picture) is designed for the rider intercom connection. That would be a very handy place to put the power connection, provided that there was no future plan for any intercom plug in the same spot.

Tenfour57:

What I'm not understanding is why you need a plug at all. The Zumo should come with two mounts. The Zumo motorcycle mount has a harness that connects to it. The harness has an audio connection for an intercom system (I use a Starcom1....but that's a whole story in itself, I won't bore you here) and a 12V power connection that is wired directly to the bike. I'd wire the Zumo harness directly to the 12V power leads that the dealer ran. Presumably, the dealer ran the leads to a switched power source that turns off when you shut the bike down. If not, you'll have to make sure you either turn off the Zumo or disconnect it when you leave the bike for any length of time, or it might drain your battery.

The other mount that has a plug connected to it is for use in your car.

I have a Zumo 550, but the 660 is pretty similar. I've included a drawing from the 660 installation manual.

I hope this is helpful. Keep us posted so we know how you made out.

Threewheels and Nancy's Toy...

ugh... this is so frustrating, since I don't understand wiring AT ALL and am not sure what all these wires/switches/plugs do, nor am I proficient in mechanic-speak terminology!! Please bear with me...

My husband has the Zumo 660 mounted on the handlebar of his HD. It is not hard-wired yet. I was under the assumption I was going to be able to easily take the GPS part off and just put it on my spyder, but I don't think so now because of the contact points on the back which are connected to his Ram Mount with screws.

I also have a Nuvi 1350 I use in my car, which I think will work on my Spyder. I got the Kewlmetal mount and a cradle, so I think I can mount it on the machine... I just need the power source, since I have the car-charger. Of course I can just use it for the couple of hours then recharge at home (or in the trunk?), but it would be so much nicer having a 12v up front.

Now that my bouncing fuel gauge repair did not fix the problem, I am thinking about asking the dealer to remove those two gauges up front so I can put a 12v on one side and something else on the other. I understand that will enable me to use the digital display fuel and temp readouts.

Hubby and I just got the Scala Rider comm system so we can talk, for when we are riding our own machines, but also 2 up, so I don't think I will need that blank switch space for the intercom, right?

I have a cigarette power plug that I attach to the battery (see below). Until I put in a permanent powerlet, that's what I use to charge my cell and run the GPS (an older Nuvi.) It all fits neatly under the seat, cheap and functional.

I FINALLY GOT THE KEWLMETAL BRACKET!

Well, I finally got the Kewlmetal bracket for the GPS and I went to install it today... easy, right?

Not unless you have the right tools... ugh...

What tool and size do I need to get the 2 bolts off? It looks like the new bolts supplied with the bracket are a different size also.

For those of you who have done this, what did you use (and where do I buy it)?

THANKS!

Just get a metric allen set and you should be goo to go... the koolmetal bolts are a larger size. But the allen set will cover both sizes.. real easy install!

The socket head on the RT are 7ml,(well they were on mine) and the new bolts I puchased are 8ml.Hope it all works out for you.

best place is on the left or right side to install a plug - this is from a car (fiat) has 12V and i can plug in my GPS ...
should be easy for your dealer to install that -
(lamonsters ideas...)

Well, I never thought getting a GPS mount would be this time-consuming, but it is finally on!!!

When I took the RTS in to the dealer Saturday to get my new Fuel Gauge replaced, they loosened the 2 lower bolts on the steering wheel for me (to install the Kewlmetal mount). Evidently they are soooooo tight, even the correct size wrench didn't work!! Girls just don't inherently know this stuff....

I ended up NOT using my husband's Zumo because of the harness issues. I decided to just use the Kewlmetal mount and Ram Mount specifically sized for my Nuvi 1350. It is not weatherproof, but I have a ziploc bag in the glove box for the times when I am caught in the rain.

I don't have it hard-wired yet. Just charging at home and using it as needed. Since the dealer couldn't figure out how to get a 12v up front for me, he has run a wire from the back up to the empty switch on the front panel under the steering wheel. Any ideas on how to use that wire to power the GPS?

Thank you all for all of your help and wonderful suggestions. I don't know what I would do without this forum!
