I wear half helmet and helmet should be a choice, not law.
I tried a full face helmet when I bought spyder and I rather not ryde than put on a full face helmet.
It's just me.

But unfortunately here in Michigan it isn't warm enough all the time to wear a 1/2 helmet... so full helmet is needed.

Helmets should be optional only if you agree to personally pay 100% of the medical bills for head injury sustained because you didn't find it important enough to protect your own head. If a rider doesn't find their head to be important, neither should your insurance company or gov't. Consider it a form of Darwinism.

Sorry for the overly opinionated answer here...it's just hard to justify not wearing one when it's known that helmets save lives...and people think seatbelt laws are important...

Have to disagree. Charge them a higher insurance premium if they select not to wear a helmet or seatbelt (much like they charge smokers more)... but to make them pay for 100% of medical bills is nuts. Put them in a higher risk category and charge them more.

How many end up vegetables on life support for 20 years that WERE wearing a helmet-- where if they were not wearing a helmet probably would have died-- and thus saved 20 years of medical bills?

You have to agree there is a MUCH higher chance of death if you are NOT wearing a helmet - this form of Dawinism could actually save insurance companies money.... not to mention provide more organ donors...

The Missus and I wear Modulars... it makes it easier to climb in and out of when your "blessed" with eyeglasses... :cus:

I agree with AKA - I also use a 1/2 helmet, and on occasion, none (hats are optional in many of the areas where I ride (ID, MT, etc). Optional is what is should be - we are adults.

They are required in Oregon, so the 1/2 meets the requirement, it's DOT certified, will keep my ears warm, and I can hear my tunes and bike humming.

Do I have a full face? Yes. A modular? Yes? I hate them both, but wear the full while on my OHV - even my SxS, because of vegetation and debris, and the modular when the weather is mid-western, and I'm stuck in it…… Like pipes, it's one of the few choices we have left….

:agree:with Firefly's comment that it is hard to find the perfect helmet the first time around. I currently have 4 Nolans and which one I wear varies with my mood. None are the perfect match--but they are close for me anyway. I like the flip up feature on the full face versions from this brand. Also like the built in communications features. Have tried on many other brands--but for me--I always come back to the Nolan.

Incredibly light weight compared to my Shoei; the antifog actually works. I am very impressed with the airflow and with the range of periferal vision it allows me. I could not be happier with it. :thumbup:

NEXX Helmets

I bought one of the X30's when they first hit the market. I liked the looks and fit. But...the side vision is limited and the ventilation is not that good, tends to fog up on cool days, and gets hot once the temperature hits 80...so I don't really wear it anymore...

This is so funny. Yesterday I was ryding my wife's scooter (150 cc) to get gas, and was thinking how glad I am to be wearing a full face helmet so nobody would know a balding and greying 50-year old man was ryding it :shemademe_smilie:

I agree 100% that wearing a helmet should be a choice (except for kids). However, I kind of also feel that if you get into an accident while not wearing a helmet and end up a vegetable, you should forfeit all rights to government assistance to take care of you for the rest of your life. But that's impractical, so what to do...

I agree, except for the fact that the costs of accidents are shared by ALL of us. If you want to take a risk and only affect yourself go for it, but that is not the case here. Helmet saved my life and I can't imagine riding without one, or getting hit and leaving my wife and kids to wipe my a**. You owe it to your loved ones to make a responsible choice when you are on a bike. Sorry, but it just makes sense. Even a slow speed getoff can result in serious damage if you are without a lid. Ask Crosby about hits to the head. Hey, a Canadian has to get in a hockey angle when he can! BTW my newest helmet is a Shoei RF 1100 and I love it.

I'm not sure about the wearing a helmet and vegetable issue.

However, death is more likely without a helmet...that we know.

Okay, how do you raise premiums in this case? People could just lie and say they wear a helmet to get the reduced rate...then if they're in an accident, do you retroactively charge them more if they're not wearing one? I still think if you're in an accident and don't have a helmet on, you pay...this might discourage others from not wearing a helmet...make it an insurance policy...like life insurance not covering for suicide, bungy jumping, etc...it might work better this way, no?
