Helmets

I am an open face helmet guy , ride a HD Softail with a Wind Vest windshield looks good and keeps the wind and bugs :spyder: :spyder: off my face. But the Spyder shield doesn't and i ordered and paid for the touring shield :'( :'( big mistake. Was wondering if i could get some advice on a good fullface or the new modular helmets?

I've always had HJC, and my last was the C-12 Carbon full face. Very comfortable ands very light. I have recently ordered a HJC SyMax II modular from Newenough.com for $209, and based upon reviews, it is another good helmet from HJC. (I thought a modular would be good for the Spyder, based upon the need to immediately answer the expected onslaught of questions!)

:agree:
I like my SyMax as well. It is a good quality helmet for a reasonable price. My favorite helmet in recent years was the Nolan N100E modular. I bought the SyMax because I got it for a very good price.
Cheers,
Bruce

My opinion on helmets is TRY ON EVERYTHING!!!!
Each brand is shaped a little different. Try on everything and see what fits you best, then if you want you can buy online from somewhere secure in the knowledge that it will fit you right.
When it comes to helmets in my opinion, it should be function first, (does it fit, does iot have all teh features I want/need) then find a cool color in that model.

I agree 100%. Without previous experience here, don't go mail order. The helmet has to fit right to do the job, and has to be comfortable enough for the long haul. I love my newest Scorpion EXO-700. It fits great, and has a slot for my glasses to fit in. The anti-fog visor really works, too. My older Fulmer helmet was better to prevent cold air coming in at my neck, though, even with the optional Scorpion air dam. The Fulmer also fogged my glasses much less. Had to ride without them in the cold rain yesterday. Pick one, put it on, fasten it, and wear it around the store for at least 15 minutes. You'll look like an idiot, but at the end of all that you will know far better if it works for you, than merely pulling it on and off.

Do any of you know of any brand besides the Nolan that has incorporated a quick release for the chin strap? Nolan's is high quality, works great and even looks good. My only problem is that my head is too big for their XXL helmet.

I have limited dexterity in my fingers on my left hand, so I tried one of those inexpensive aftermarket add-on quick releases. It worked okay until the metal fatigued, it wouldn't open and I had to ask a complete stranger for help getting my helmet off. (I was on a road trip ... and yes it was kind of embarrassing, lol.)

The HJC Symax fits me best. I love a flip-up style helmet just because I like to get some wind sometimes and I almost always have it flipped up around town. I've tried all the others and I keep going back to the HJC. I wore my last one out. ;D

The BRP helmets are made by Scorpion - I have both a 400 and a 700 - like them. I had to go with an XXXL because my brain is SO freakin huge! ;D

Try on tons of them. I was shocked I needed an XXXL - but it works great. Has the quick release and plenty of venting.

I just bought a quick release that I added to my straps for $7.99. It is really neat and easy. My helmet is always preadjusted. Check your local shops for one.

Try it on before buying. Have a XL Nolan 100E which just isn't comfortable. My head just doesn't fit the interior shape. Replaced with a SHOEI XL RF1000 which is perfect.

Shoei Multi-tech modular. A bit pricey, but I'm worth it. Love being able to open it up to put on/off and makes sunglasses much easier to put on, too. Agree with other posts... don't mail order unless you have actually tried on the exact helmet and size size in a store.

I always put one of these on my helmets when I get them.

Ive seen them in almost all motorcycle shops, and all the moving/securing parts are metal and havent failed on me yet.

Ditto!!! i've always had open-face, half-helmets, "puddin-pots", etc. decided in my old age i'd try to do a better job of protecting my nugget. i tried on probably 60 or 70 different full-face or modular helmets and the one that fit me the best and offers all the features i wanted was the HJC Symax II. Sometimes i wear my glasses and it has a 2 position inner shade screen that clears my glasses and of course the outer clear screen which i found when down i prefer open on the first or second notch for air flow. As already mentioned, being able to flip up the chin section comes in really handy for answering all those annoying questions at stop lights, plus lets me still feel the "open" face around town when i want it open (although the instruction sheet says to ALWAYS have it down an locked). The comparison in the price of the HJC and other modulars (none of which seemed to fit my head as well) made it a bargain. Just my 2 cents!!! In any case, try on as many as you can and use the other suggestion, walk around the store with it on to see how it feels, especially before ordering one on-line. Good luck!!!

For what it's worth. I think the Nolan N-102 is the best helmet on the market for the price. It is a consumer reports Best Buy and is rated at the top of most helmet reviews. It has a quick reaease buckle and Nolan VPS (vision protection sytem) dark visor. They also come N-Com ready, so you can add the N-Com Blue tooth system. Personally, it's the most comfortable helmet that I have ever worn. I sold 175 of these ( all over the world)from my store and website last year. I sell HJC,Shoei,Arai, etc. My vote goes to the Nolan.

I love the N-102, but it doesn't love me. My head is just the wrong shape, I guess. Maybe they need to make the top more pointed! ;D Anyway, just shows that you have to try them on until one agrees with you.

So you've had good luck with that type? That is what I had break for me...maybe it was just a bad one...

Thanks for the suggestion.
The only problem Ive had with it is if you insert it crooked and only one side catches. Like you said its a bear to unhook, but I just undid the strap from it (the long side) and fixed it then reattached. Ive moved one from one helmet to a new one, and its still goin strong!!!

I also bought the Shoei MutiTec Modular. This helmet even has the slight tapered inside padding to allow for glasses.
I did lots of research and tried on many helmets. By far the multitec was the best.

I do recommend a Scorpion helmet case.
