HD STILL can't get their tune up right!

Looks like after all these years, HD could get their tune up right so the HD riders would not have to sit there and rev their motors all the time at red lights and stop signs to keep them running and let the rider rest his or her hand...

It's not just at stop lights and signs. You ever seen a group of 'them' at the bar after a few rounds? They love to go out to their bikes and just sit there reving em up.

My dad rode a BMW boxer with a friend who had a Harley. They pulled up to a stop light together one day and had a short conversation before the light turned green. My dad took off but quickly noticed in his mirror that his friend was still sitting at the stoplight. Returning he discovered that the shifter had fallen off the Harley while they'd waited for the light to change and his friend was attempting to replace it.

I sometimes rode my Honda Valkyrie with my brother-in-law who had a Harley. One day I showed him the 'Nickel Trick'. This is where you place a nickel, on edge, on the valve cover and rev the engine up. The nickel will move around some, but it won't fall over. After showing him this, I handed my nickel to him and just smiled. Can you believe it? He threw my nickel on the ground and walked away.... He seemed disgusted. But I never found out if it was my bike or his he was upset with.

I've always been told that Harley's were special and one of a kind. I have to agree with that assessment!

I like oil leaks, a top speed of 85mph, and revving my open exhaust v-twin going through underpasses and when beside old people in traffic... it's very manly. Adds inches to your ....

Say what you will about Harley Davidson but as far as I know they are the only powersports company around manufacturing continuously for 120 years. I think it is alright to poke good natured fun at each other but let's not get mean about it.

A Buell XB12S and a Harley XR1200 Sportster.

I agree. I owned many Harleys over the years and they have all been more dependable than my Spyder. Don't get me wrong I like my Spyder, but it's the little stuff that can drive you nuts.

You people must get completely different Harleys to those we get here in Oz?! :shocked:

Here, even the weekend 'coffee shop' or 'Pub run' rides run by HOG, rides that are no more than 100 or so km at most, have a tilt tray & mini-bus following!! And you almost never see more than a half dozen Harleys out riding without a car or van following, often a tilt tray or tray top with a lift as well! If the chase vehicles aren't picking up bikes & riders that have 'failed to proceed' for some reason, they're picking up all the parts that fall off!! And it really seems that they pretty much NEVER go home empty!! :banghead:

While leaving my bike with a mate somewhere & hitching home, or borrowing a ride, used to be a common occurrence back when I rode Harleys & was young & foolish & had lotsa money to throw away (Yeah, yeah, that was waaaayyy back before I got married and we had kids! ) but since buying my Spyder, I've never failed to get where I was going and back again on it! :lecturef_smilie:

I wouldn't (and don't) hesitate to just get up one morning & on the spur of the moment, simply decide that I'm going to ride my Spyder somewhere over 1000km away, often doing that sorta 1000 km trip in less than 12 hours. I didn't/wouldn't ever do that on one of my Harleys back in the day... Mind you, my Harley's were usually fairly old (they'd be called 'Antiques' now! ) and my Spyder IS a 2013 RT with the Heat Recall done and an ECU Upgrade, arguably the pinnacle of the V-Twin Spyders, so it isn't one of the 'last few years' versions of Spyders that seem to be somewhat less reliable and even not so well put together as the earlier Spyders. I know that I certainly haven't seen anywhere near the factory originated issues in Spyders made from 2012 to about 2016 as those I've seen in the later/newer/more recent models!! So maybe those of you who feel you have unreliable Spyders are just riding the more recent models, those where BRP has been cutting corners and costs at their owner's expense?? :shocked: :dontknow:

I have done many multi-week trips covering thousands of miles over multiple decades of riding HD and never once had to have my Harley towed or visited a shop for maintenance. Maybe I was lucky, but that's my story. Even did Iron Butt ride on one (when I was younger). But having bad shoulders and knees the Spyder suits me better these days.

I've ridden my 1979 XLCH coast to coast and back, and while it was an AMF bike there was always something breaking or falling off. But I was always able to repair the ole' Iron head without having to bring it to a dealership. I rode that pile for 50,000 miles. I knew I could repair it.
Now my Spyder is a way better machine, but over complicated piece of machinery, and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to make repairs on the side of the road like I did my XLCH. I also don't like the fact that the dealer network is terrible. It sure sounded good with drag pipes when I blipped the throttle at a stop light ;-)>

I would love to have an old Ironhead, but the cost more than I can afford after buying my Spyder. I had a 'Brother' who could make the Ironhead and it's sibling the Shovelhead, run like a stripped ass ape.
