• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Happy tax day?

I think the extended date is now July 15th to file. I thought I read that you'll still pay interest if you owe and don't pay until then but won't have to pay the normal penalty. (or the other way around). I owe, I paid, I'm broke but done.

Can't recall it ever happening before but if this is what it take to have the date extended I don't believe I'd ever like to see another extension.

You can request an extension any year. Don't know that they ever gave an automatic extension. Mine were E-filed the end of February. All done before any of the insanity started.

Has there ever been another instance where the tax deadline has been moved?

Sure - It's happened plenty of times, but only by one day, when 4/15 has fallen on a weekend. Also, since 4/15 is Holiday in much of New England (Patriot's Day - Boston Marathon Day), the deadline is often extended by a day in that area of the country.

But extending it by 3 months may well be a first.

I found this:

"April 15th has not always been the filing deadline. March 1st was the date specified by Congress in 1913, after the passage of the 16th amendment. In 1918 Congress pushed the date forward to March 15th, where it remained until the tax overhaul of 1954, when the date was again moved ahead to April 15th."

That would mean it has been moved 2 other times.

The original tax return due date was slipped to 15 July but the payment date was kept at 15 April, as is the extension filing law; one can request a six month extension but any taxes due are still due by 4/15. However, the IRS quickly came back with a Covid-19 relief change that extended both filing and payment dates 7/15 for 2019 returns.
