There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Gas Smell

Questions

New member
Good afternoon, I rode for a couple hours yesterday and the temperature got to about 83. When we stopped a few times I could smell a light smell of gasoline. I didnt see any leaks and the engine temp was running normal and radiator fan came on when needed. . I noticed that the gas filler area gets hot. Is this normal for a 2012 RT SM5? I seen threads about this before but I cant remember what was discussed.:(

Then this is normal gas tank venting--When I rode two wheels I had bike that had vent tubes from the gas tank.

I should rephrase my response. It isn't uncommon for a spyder to emit gas odors but it shouldn't be happening as frequently and as intense as it does.

Little..!!

many do. There was a recall on the gas caps. If you did not get one in the mail check with your dealer to see if you do have the new one. Over filling can also cause this as filling to fast. But hot days long rydes can give a slight smell of fuel...

After trying several things, the best "fix" so far is to fill up your tank at the closest station right before you go home. The fresh cool gas cools the tank down enough so that you shouldn't get any smell in the garage, or very very little anyway. It's not much help riding of course. It is all related to the heating of the gas tank which causes the gas to vaporize and expand more readily thus forcing it out the vent tube.

If anyone can devise a permanent fix for the pre-2014 :spyder2:'s they will be forever a hero.

Its been fixed. A combination of heat reduction, insulation of fuel tank and exhaust pipes and an increase in ventilation WILL solve the fuel vaporization issue. How much of each depends on the bike, where you ride and the weather you encounter.

I have mine MUCH better than when new, nearly gone. Or perhaps completely gone with my latest round of ventilation improvements but not ready to declare victory yet. After the Durango owners event, if the fumes are gone I will call it good.

Mine was a bad gas cap, but it wouldn't vent.

Yea this way if it spontaneously combusts you can make sure the entire building and all it's contents go up with the Spyder.

A machine spewing gas IS NOT NORMAL unless a spill is caused when filling.

The gas in your tank is boiling the Spyders are known for getting the tanks really hot hot enough to boil the gas and I mean boil the gas.

Now some of the posters are correct this "normal" for the Spyders but not for all MC.

Saying it is is normal is a cop out by BRP because of design shortcomings.

Google it it you will be amazed.

I guess that we're going to hear this same rant from you in every post now...

Exactly what is it; that you want from us? :dontknow:
You sold your bike...
We thought that you'd be happy by now! :D

I have a 2010 RTS and I most definitely smell gas when I shut off after a longer run. Has there actually been a recall? Is there danger?

I read that someone said there was a gas cap recall, but what about the vent hose? And does this go back to 2010 models? Guess I'll check with the dealer.

I hate to say it, but I think your agenda is showing.

The gas cap change may or may not help. As part of the Canisterectomy discussion, you'll see the addition of a longer overflow tube - reaching under the bike, really helps. Additionally, it is easy to over fill the tank, and put raw fuel in the Canister. I recommend you remove it for a few days - placing it outside (if it's dry/hot), then returning it to the bike. That, coupled with the longer tube, should fix your problem. You might also consider using a McCuff(r) to assure you don't over fill the tank.

:agree: Move along nothing here for you to see and you have nothing to offer Ramit. You swore you had yours fixed and I told you it wasn't but you blew me off. We have enough issues without a non owner constantly whining ,want some cheese with that? Time for you to get a life and start complaining about your new ride in their forum.

Lots of canister posts. It's on the right side, in front of the seat area - under the tupperware. My stock canister had a 3" vent tube.... Yes, behind and above that hot thing called a motor..

GAS SMELL

I HAD A SPYDER TECH TELL ME THE PURGE VALVE DOES NOT OPEN BELOW 5000 RPM HE TOLD ME TO RUN 6000+RMP THE LAST FEW MILE HOME THAT WOULD PURGE THE CANISTER. HE TOLD ME TO ALWAYS SHIFT AT 5000 TO 6000RPM EVEN IN 1ST.:doorag:
