Garmin Zumo 665 integration with RT-S?

Hi guys I just traded up from my Spyder RS to an RTS and pick it up this Saturday  I hope there are some techy-types here that can answer a question or two.
1.) Will the Garmin Zumo 665 integrate with the Spyder display and can the functions on the GPS be controlled with the left hand grip controls? (This is my understanding of how the BRP GPS/XM radio works.)
2.) What GPS mount and cabling would I need and where would I get it?
Some math:
The BRP website lists the GPS Navigation System @ $1,200.00 (Garmin Zumo 660) and the XM Satellite Radio kit for $450.00. Total = $1650.00.
The Garmin Zumo 665 has all the functions of the 660 and the XM Satellite Radio built-in and can be found for $750.00.
Total savings: $900.00
Now what I need is some good advice why I or anyone would want the BRP GPS/XM set-up. I know there are advantages and disadvantages to everything so I’m hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. I also wonder if my CanAM dealer would even install the GPS 665 or if it would void my warranty.
Thanks!

If you are getting an RT-S you should have the XM Radio included.

But I want to keep up since I have a Garmin 660 and I want to install it to my RT-A&C, get maybe a RAM mount on it and a hard wire cable to charge it. That is it.

gps mount...

I used the Kewlmetal mounting bracket for the RT. You could also use the BRP cast mounting bracket, which I'm told is now available as a stand alone item. You will also need to purchase the GPS harness cable from BRP... Item #710002182.

XM is an option for the RTS, not standard equipment.

The only integration of the GPS on the Spyder is to tie it into the audio speakers (and provide power), as far as I know. It cannot be controlled from the multi-function control.

Interesting update, my dealer just got off the phone with BRP and was told simply that the GPS 665 just won’t work. No details whatsoever as to why not. Hmm lets see…it’s the same unit as there’s except the XM radio is included. It must be a wiring harness issue I guess, anyway I have asked my dealer to call BRP again and get some details.
This brings up a couple other questions if I’m forced to use the Zumo GPS 660 and the XM radio unit:
1.) Is the BRP XM radio unit made by BRP or can it be purchased someplace else?
2.) I can find the Zumo GPS 660 for $507.00 so why pay BRP $1200.00? Sounds to me like they want me to pay $693.00 for a wiring harness.
I don’t mind BRP making some profit off of me and I expect that but there charging double the price and that to me is ripping off the customer. :lecturef_smilie:

The 665 will not work with the BRP system, but there is no reason why it cannot work as a stand alone, via bluetooth to a helmet system, for instance. It depends on the features you are looking for. As I said, the GPS isn't very integrated anyway. If it is the XM feature you need, I'm sure you can find some way to play a system, either through the Spyder's 3.5 mm audio connection, or via a wired or wireless helmet system.

To answer your questions:

1.) The XM is not manufactured by BRP, but it is licensed to them exclusively, and is not available from another source. As I recall, it requires purchase of the Entertainment Harness, too.

2.) The main advantages to the BRP GPS are the mounting bracket and the wiring harness. The harness is already available from BRP, and the bracket is supposed to be available separately later this year. There are also aftermarket brackets available...or you can use a RAM mount. Yes, just like the BMW system, the BRP GPS is overpriced.

I always thought it was a step above the RT-A&C package... but I guess not. My bad.

Car makers do the same thing. Either you get it or you don't. I downloaded the Sirius XM app to my iPhone and plug it into the iPad connection. The only disadvantage to this is that you have to plug the iPhone before you start the Spyder, wait until it starts the iPod, pause and start the Sirius XM app to the channel you want to hear. Another disadvantage to this is that you can't change channels thru the Command Center; get off the Spyder, go to the back cargo and change thru the iPhone. Also, the app won't work if the 3G network is not avaliable.

(This is getting very interesting as I've been put off by BRP's pricing also. I know that he Kewlmetal bracket is about 50 bucks, and I can get a 660 pretty darn cheap online, so I'm pitching it to the Missus as a way to SAVE about 600 bucks... :ohyea::yes:)

I agree that the GPS and even the XM (not to mention the CB) are way over priced. I'm taking the approach to put on the KewlMetal GPS/Gizmo mount on the bars. I've already done the Bluetooth helmet stuff (see below). I have connected my iPhone via Bluetooth to the helmets. I also have the XM/Sirius app on my iPhone, and of course the iPod is then in my helmet. I also added a little Bluetooth transmitter that I wired into my rear speakers so thus the bike's AM/FM/WX radio comes to my helmet.

That leaves the GPS. I have an existing TomTom GO930 and the PLAN is to use it's Bluetooth output to also link to the helmet. So far, all that I read on the helmets, this will all play nice together;). I have all but the GPS running and it works nicely.

Typically the phone lives on my hip or jacket pocket and automatically connects. I MAY swap to the Garmin that has XM in it to gain its other advantages on traffic, weather, etc.

The helmet system is- SENA SMH10.

Thanks for the input guys. My dealer tells me that I’m getting the BRP AM/FM Integrated Audio System and the IPod integration Cable with my new RT-S so I think I can live without the XM Radio. However, I do want the Zumo 660 GPS.
“NancysToy”…you said:

So do you think I could buy the wiring harness and bracket from BRP and the GPS from another source and have my dealer install it?

My understanding is to have any gps integrated into the RT-S display you have to have the com/cb system, ( which I bought ). I bought the RT-S gps plug that goes behind the right saddle bag and built my own harness to use for a Garmin 855T

You can buy the harness right now. I forget the part number, but a search on this site should land it for you. The BRP bracket is not yet able to be ordered. It is unknown when it will be available. My guess would be the end of the summer, if other accessories are any indication. Installation depends on your dealer. I doubt that any would balk too much if you ordered the harness and bracket from them.

Are you saying that a Garman 660 GPS can be controlled with the left hand control switches on the Spyder and that the Garmin display can be shown on the RT-S display?

I just had a sumo 665 mounted on the spyder. have only used it so far with my truck due to recent surgery, but it tested fine (bought from bay). have scale headset arriving tomorrow. I'll know how well they work as soon as I get released to ride in a few weeks

You cannot control the GPS from the handlebars, and the GPS display or info does not show on the Spyder dash display. Only the audio is integrated with the Spyder audio.

Yes, I believe you can as long as you have the com/cb and are wired to the plug by the right saddle bag. The Spyder doesn't know what gps you have, Garmin 855,660 265 makes no difference

I can not comment on the Integration of the GPS into the RT system, as I have a GS, but any nav unit (Garmin Nuvi, Zumo, Tom Tom, ect) can be used as a stand alone unit and Ram mount provides a mount for most.

I put a Road Tech 660 (Harley Zumo 660) on the GS and use the Sena SH10 Phil mentioned connected to it via bluetooth. I also connected the Sena to my iphone for the tunes...works great :2thumbs:.

This is all good info for when I pull the trigger and get a RT...

By installing the com/cb and using the plug by the right saddle bag the gps would be integrated into the Spyder audio system, which then you would use the left handle bar controls to place the audio in aux, by doing this you would be able to hear the gps/mp3 in your headset. All the gps functions would sill be on the gps.The Spyder audio system does not know one gps from another.
