Frustrated with my RT

Questions

New member
Has anyone out there been having the same problems with their RT. I finally bought a brand new 2010 RT with zero miles on the bike. I also bought the matching trailer, thinking that my partner and I would be taking long rides on the bike. I bought the bike in September of 2010. Since then the bike has been in the shop 4 times. The first time of course was the DPS recall which took place after the first month that I owned the bike. Then the master cyclinder went out. These of course where minor problems. The next one of course was a major problem. While returning from a weekend in the keys and going over 70mph on the highway, the sterring sensor in the bike went out causing the bike to shut itself down. Have you ever been on the interstate in Miami, Fla and have no power to get out of the way of the moving cars? I can tell you that it is very scary. After that incident, I was scared to get on the bike, but my friends who have been bikers for over 30 years, told me to get back on it. I did and just 4 days ago the ignition coil and cluster went out. Yet again I have to have it towed to the dealer. Everytime I take it to the dealer they say we fixed it and you should have no more problems. BRP's idea was to extend my warranty by 3 months. Does anyone know what recourse I might have? I told them if this was a lexus, they would have taken it back. Don't get me wrong I love my spyder but if you pay alot of money for something it shouldn't:gaah: keep breaking when its only 9 months old.

Nothing made or assembled by man in quantity is ever going to be perfect every time. Every manufacturer knows this to be true, (even Lexus knows it), and BRP knows it because the company has an overview of how many components they are replacing each month under warranty.

When they get info from their dealer network that one customer is suffering repeated breakdowns it is in BRP's interest to step in and take away some of the pain. A so-called "good will gesture". In your case they have provided, or are offering you, an extra 3 months of warranty cover.

No, to answer your question, a new Spyder shouldn't keep breaking down and there are plenty of Spyder owners posting here whose machines haven't broken down, so if this website membership is typical of the population in general, the Spyder appears to be a reliable machine.

Yes, you've been unfortunate, but looking on the optimistic side the breakdowns you've had so far may be all the breakdowns you will ever have. (Note I did say, "may be").

I hope so, you've had a run of bad luck.

Anything can and will break. I'd take the 3 month on warranty and move forward with many enjoyable miles on the Spyder.

My question is has the issue been resolved. My guess is that it hasn't if you are just now posting. I had similar, but not precisely the same symptoms, and it was the wiring harness that runs to the back of my spyder. Although I haven't ridden my spyder a sufficient number of miles (only 1500) to say with certainty my issue was resolved, I can say that my symptoms have not exhibited themselves since my fix.

If your problem has been fixed, and this is BRP's way of assuaging your concerns, then I would definitely take the three month warranty extension.

No one should have the issues you are having. Fortunately, this kind of experience is very rare.

All you want is for your Spyder to work. When it does you are probably a very happy camper since the Spyder is a great ride.

You can't change the past and situations like this are somewhat like the stock market. 'Past performance is not necessarily and indicitive of future results'.

Looking on the positive side (which I admit may be difficult at this point) none of the 'Fixed' issues has come back again.

I think I speak for everyone here that we would hate to see you give up on one of the greatest riding experiences in the world. We hope you perservere and get past this difficulty, the sun breaks through and you can join the ranks of extremely satisfied Spyder riders. No one is saying you don't have every reason to be dissatisfied with your Spyder or that you should take this lying down.

You may want to discuss the wiring harness issue that MouthPiece brought up with your dealer.

We are all here for you.

Keep us posted.

I would ask for a year extension on the warranty...BRP should really extend itself to make you happy...

:agree: You're bending over backwards in an attempt to work out problems with an unreasonably unreliable Spyder. Sounds like the dealership is doing what they can and BRP also needs to recognize that this particular unit was not what it should have been.

With everyone giving a little and working together (as in a full year extended warranty) hopefully things will work out well all around.

And I would also hope you would never need to use the extension on the Warranty. If your Spyder gets fixed correctly, it would end up being no more than a great jesture on BRP's part.

Not to be argumentative, but I'm not sure it's that rare. We're almost 2,000 miles from home now and my RT check engine light was on upon startup this morning, idling at 2200 rpm and wouldn't go above 3,000 rpm. I finally fiddled with it for about 2 hours and got it running. Rode about 100 miles and all was fine until a re-start at a gas station.

There are too many glitches that crop up.
There are too few dealers for long distance touring.
Dealers need to be trained to give priority to those stranded far from home.
Edit to add: Greater mileage between oil changes.
Needs better gas mileage for riding in some of the less populated areas of some states. We stopped at one station that only had 85.5 octane gas! I've never seen that before.
