Front trunk lid removal

I just had an enjoyable hour trying to remove the trunk lid for painting. The Pem nut in the lower lid mounting hinge broke loose and I had to destroy the plastic to get a grip on the nut so I could get it off. Luckily the part is only $11.

Wondering what lock tight stuff BRP uses and if I can use the blue Loctite when I put it all back together?

I would think you do not need super strong locktite. No way it will come loose and much less fall out/off.. :thumbup:

You should not use Loctite around plastic...especially polycarbonate or acrylics. It will cause the plastic to craze, soften, or crack. I'd recommend using a locknut instead. Epoxy it in place if necessary (or use an adhesive/repair made for plastics.

To Late now but you could have drilled a small pin hole into side of brass insert and held it from turning. I do not see any need to use Loctite perhaps a longer screw and jam nut if necessary. If longer screw is not available you could see how far screw is in and just before home nick the thread so it tightens up.

Thanks. Think I'll just use the bolt with the thread locker it already has and hope the new lower hinge works.

I'll have to remember the drill trick.

If you are worried about the nut staying put, a dab of RTV silicone will hold it, without the problems Loctite causes on plastic. After the nut is tightenened to your satisfaction, and the lid is tested for proper operation, put a blob of silicone on the nut end, covering the bolt and touching the plastic. Not pretty, but plenty functional. Another alternative is to silicone the nut in place (as long as there is still enough plastic to keep it from turning), let it cure, then install the bolt. If you take that approach it pays to put some vaseline (and/or a small bolt) in the threads beforehand so you don't have to chase them with a tap.
