I just finished having my 600 mile service on my 2011 Spyder RTS/SE5. They said it would cost $198 & parts. The total came to $294.93 & Tax.

5 Quarts of Synthetic BRP OIL $12.99/EA. $64.95
1 Engine Oil Filter $14.99
1 E5 Oil Filter $14.99

Labor $198.00
Hazardous Waste Removal $ 2.00
Total $294.93 & Tax (7%)
What did they do ?
1.check air filter, battery, valves, ACS system,
2. change oil and oil filters
3. check battery, hoses, fluids, suspension, controls, tires, brakes,
4. computer for codes , updates
5. parking brake

It took just over an hour, including road test.

If the valves they said they checked were the engine valves they are fibbing. It would take almost an hour just to get to them. The rest sounds reasonable. I would ask some questions.

:agree:No way they checked the valves ! What is your dealers shop rate ? You had said that it only took a little over an hour for the service but it looks like they charged you at least 2 hours ? I would also check if they used a blended oil or the full synthetic ?

Sorry after reading your post again they most likely have a flat rate for the service and all things considered the price was in the range others had posted, but as said no way did they check the valves !

That is a good question about the valves. They also mentioned it would take about 2- 2 1/2 hours for the job. They were finished in less than an hour.

The same would go for the air filter.

The book also says "check spark plugs". I watched my service and brought that up and they pretty much admitted not checking spark plugs at the 600.

Did the OP watch the service?

Why do the dealers charge us 5 quarts of oil, when it is just over 4 quarts. The oil comes from a bulk drum. Can't they do simple math and figure the correct cost of part of the 5th quart? If they can't do that, how can they figure out the correct ft/lbs for the nuts and bolts tightness? If they actually put in 5 quarts, you are 1/2 quart over, and that's not good. And I agree, no way the valves were checked for the amount of time they took. I doubt they did anything more than change the oil and filters. Just my opinion, from a little experience.

I Don't blame them;
I've changed more spark plugs in my younger days than Carter has pills.
I could even change 8 plugs though hot tube headers between races' But i must be getting old,
Because if I have to change them on my Spyder again I'll sell it.:gaah:

Bob, i dont blame them, i just don't want to pay for that "time" and not:lecturef_smilie: have it done.

:agree:

RE Valves: Most people are letting the valve check go at the recommended 10K and 20K. Most people have been charged up to 8 hrs labor when that operation is done. They have also been charged $800-$1200 for that service.

My dealer put in just over four quarts, put the partially filled bottle in a plastic bag and said use this to top off later...you paid for five quarts. They used the quart BRP bottles...I never trusted the "bulk oil" thingie... I never really knew what was really in that bulk oil barrel....JMHO

All the things listed above are what they hand wrote on the repair order. The have a Honda sign in service that says" The first service is not just an oil change." Honda shows a chart with all the items that are checked at the service, and the dealer said that is exactly what they do. However, every 600 mile service from almost every dealer charges at least $198. But $15/qt. of synthetic oil (they said it was brp oil). They also said the Spyder's use oil, and that is why they recommend oil changes every 3000 miles. They also said that most of the services take forever since there is sooooooooooooo much Tupperware to remove. I agree.

p.s. What I was concerned about was the fact that the test ride after the service took the mechanic away for close to half an hour, and he put on 10 miles on the odometer. The other mechanic said that after they change the oil they have to test ride it to make sure there are no codes showing up. Is that for real or not ? I figured he ran a few errands while he was out. NOOOOOO test ride is EVER 10 miles. Most never even leave the lot.

My dealer test rides all the bikes and Spyders 5 to 10 miles before they let the customer drive off, I would think you would radder have them make sure they did the repair right then you and be stuck on the side of the road? I would have it no other way.

You list that they checked the valves as one of the checks and still had time to do a 10 mile test ride in a little over an hour.

Hmmmm.... anyone with an opinion

Why 2 filters?

I did an oil change on my Spyder this Sunday and the manual states 4.1 quarts. So they probably charged you 5 quarts because they needed the .1 :)

I'll guarantee that they did not check the valves in that time. I suspect the valve check is a generic item, that is performed on conventional motorcycles during the first service. It is not required on the Spyder at that interval. Keep in mind that the hour is probably a flat rate fee, so the actual service could take longer or shorter. It certainly would not include the several hours necessary to check the valves on a Spyder, though, nor is it likely to include actually checking the front spark plug...especially on an RT. JMHO
