600 Mile service done in Houston

The last oil change kit I got at my dealer was $65 and it came with the longer trans filter and cover in the box. Yes I change my own oil.

Pitbull Powersports, 600 Mile service, oil, filters, complete check of bike and adjust what needed to be adjusted $206.00 tax included.

Don't know much about them other than they don't sell that many. Is their Spyder service better?

No personal experience. Bill in their parts department is outstanding. I'll be trying the service department for my 600 service. I have heard good feedback.

My 'service' was done at Mancuso Southwest.

Wow! That just suxs! I sure won't be going there ever (I'm north side of Houston anyways).

But in general I've never found dealerships all that reliable even for my larger vehicles... I once had to take my GMC Dually truck in for a failed fuel sending unit still under extended warranty. Took it to the dealership where I'd originally bought the truck new. They replaced the sending unit under warranty, but a few days later I was doing my own engine oil change and laying under the front end I looked down the underside of the vehicle and thought the fuel tank looked like it was lower than normal... rolled back there on my creeper, to find the tank just swinging loose as a goose they had only hand-threaded the tank strap bolts into the frame when they re-installed the tank! Literrally, I could have lost the fuel tank while driving down the highway each of the 4 bolts was only hand threaded in 2 or 3 threads worth! :gaah:

A friend of mine who recently had the dealership change the oil in her vehicle got 1/4 mile down the road and her engine shut-down suddenly... they had to tow the car back to the dealership, which had forgotten to put *any* oil in! They drained the oil changed the filter and then pulled it out of the service bay... wtf?

So if you're planning to keep it, learn to do evey bit of maintenance you can yourself... it's worth it! I'm already looking at how to change the oil and filters on my 2012 Spyder, it's just about ready for the 3K mile service. Check YouTube there are some videos there I found on how to perform many common maintenance items on Spyders.

ps. I pulled some of the side panels off my Spyder yesterday just looking, and found that the dealership the previous owner in Louisianna had used for this Spyder's 600 mile service had left many of the lower left side body panel bolts loose (as in, not screwed in past 2 or 3 threads) and they apparently left the upper belt guard off completely I now realize I don't have one dang-it (I guess they removed it to check belt tension during 600 mile service?)! :cus:

Dealerships or Stealerships, if the shoe fits....

My 'service' was done at Mancuso Southwest. Perhaps I should try Gulf freeway location or is there one up north side? My wife gets her Harley serviced at Mancuso Crossroads HD on 290 and the experience could not be more different that what I had. I will likely do my own service going forward. I do on everything else I own but would like not to have to. Suppose its a good thing I did not expect them to actually fix anything.
I recommend NOT going to the one on the North side. Not even for warranty work.

Closer Option

To get away from the Mancuso franchise, I would have to travel to Austin or San Antonio for service. I can do it myself far easier than traveling those distances. I should not have to. BRP needs to do better.

All of my experiences at Pro Powersports in Conroe have been positive, both service and sales. A bit further north for you, but lots closer than Austin or San Antonio. Believe my 600 mile service was about $280 and completed in 3 hours or so. They offer a 10% discount to local SRA members, same day service if you have a maintenance plan, and throw a BBQ lunch monthly for the local chapter. Seem interested in keeping our business and have several spyders on the floor for sale. Might give them a shot next time.

I'm a LOT closer to Conroe Powersports than either of the Houston area Mancuso dealerships... still, if at all possible I'll be doing my own maintenance and hoping nothing requiring warranty work ever arises on this Spyder! I have a long history of working on my own vehicles, from John Deere tractors to Peterbilt 18-wheelers to my GMC Dually to my 2006 SeaDoo RXT PWC... I think I'll be ok.

Stories of bad Dealership service (and my own experience with that!) always amaze me... you'd think they'd know better. I guess there's a sucker born every day though and that keeps them in business.

Michael,

I don't know if you can blame the dealership for your belt guard coming off. If you check the past posts on belt guards, many (including mine) came off. At least yours did not get stuck in your belt and shock causing more problems. Jill

600 Mile Service

Hopefully things have changed at the Mancuso Dealership in League City. When I took my Spyder there a few years back for the steering lock-up problem they said they could not find anything wrong but said that I did need new rear brake pads. That was total BS because I had just replaced the rear tire the week before and they were fine AND the steering locked up on me 2 miles from the dealership on the way home. They hadn't even taken a test ride because there was only a 1 tenth mile change on the odometer. At the Mancuso Powersports dealership on the SW freeway when I took my Spyder in for the power steering recall, they left it sitting outside for several weeks, didn't put all the panels on correctly and dented my new Hindle slip-on exhaust. Experiences like these are why I no longer own a Spyder. At that time trained Spyder technicians in the Houston area were non-existent. Good luck with your search for a reputable Dealership.

I don't know Jill... when I bought this one last summer it had just had it's 600 mile dealership service done. At the time, I didn't notice the upper belt guard was gone (it's my 1st Spyder so I didn't even realize there was supposed to be a guard there honestly). The seller says that they didn't remove it and didn't know it was missing... so I can only guess the dealership they used over in Louisianna removed it to check the belt tightness maybe? Surely there was one on it when the previous owner bought it brand new??? The machine only had 880 miles on it when I purchased it, the upper belt guard has been gone since I bought it and previous owner barely ever drove it.

The lower body panel bolts I found not screwed in yesterday, those things were only hand threaded in and they required the tool to screw in further so *somebody* had removed and then not fully re-installed them during the 600 mile oil change of this I just have little doubt!

ps. I *have* been reading these forums for about 4-5 months now and I haven't seen any other posts about belt guards just falling off for no reason... I'll do just as much of my own maintenance as I can, so as to make sure stuff is done RIGHT and done COMPLETELY.
