BumbleBee

RT-S PE#0174
I bought my spyder 10 days ago. My very first bike, and I love it. I got a problem, now I always have Helmet Hair. I sure could use some advice from the spyder-riding female's, any suggestions??? :gaah::chat:

My (Soon to be Wife) has extensions in her Hair and this also is a problem.
She wears a Bandana underneath to ensure that the pull (when removing her helmet) does not pull her extenstions out.

(Her solution, Cut your hair Short! :> )

Several things to try, you will have to try them all to decide what works best for you.
1. Wear a "cap" (or tie a bandanna or use a do-rag thingy) between you and the helmet. You can control the way your hair lays flat under the cap, but not under the helmet. Make sure the "flat" direction is opposite of what you want the finished look to be. When you stop, take them both off and push the hair the opposite direction that you flattened it under the cap. Instant "fluff" and "lift.
2. If your hair is short, take a small water spray bottle. When you stop, spray, shake and mold with your fingers. The water will refresh your skin also.
3. I have long hair and will wear my cap into the bathroom, if we are staying for a bit, I will toss and water spritz. If not, just wear the cap and put the helmet back on.
Do-rags, caps, etc are available at swapmeets and all motorcycle gear shops. Buy one, find a "sewing" friend that can change the design (make a pattern) to meet your needs. I sew my own but don't have time to work for others. I made fleece ones for winter, flannel for damp weather and cotton for summer.
Best of luck, hope this helps :doorag:

I have long hair and bangs, I am not cutting it short either, not an option for me. I let my bangs grow out a year ago, it was awful, I have a round face and just did not suit me at all. I will try out all your advices, and see what I can come up with. (I still want to look good for my husband after 23 years)!!! Thank-you all very much!!! :spyder:

Long bangs? Remember that anything you wear under your helmet will hurt like (*^&$%*) about 30 min. into a ride. The bouncing road, the turns, etc. will cause the hair pin, barrette, etc to dig into the scalp, break the hair root, etc. That is why the only "comfort" is the flat hair cap.
However, I do have a helmet that is way too big. For short rides, pull up my hair to the highest point, twist and coil, a couple of tiny baby sized hair pins, quickly put the helmet on and when I take it off, I give my head a shake... it looks like a hair commercial. Only works on short trips.
And remember poorly sized helmets are dangerous, oh yeah I only wear full faced helmets.

I have short bangs, and my hair goes a little pass my shoulders.:spyder:

Try pulling the long hair up to the top, twist and coil. Have to hold it with something elastic, no hard metal or it will hurt, put the helmet on quickly but this is only good for short trips as the wind and movement will drop all the hair out of the helmet and make a big mess!

I have long hair too. I usually take a hat with me to cover it up if I'm just popping into and out of places or I'll wear a bandana or do-rag. If I am going to work or somewhere I am going to be for a while I take a brush and a little spray bottle of spray on conditioner. Also to keep my hair from getting tangled when I ride I tuck it into my jacket, braid it, put it in this leather wrap I got at the Harley store, or I wear a turtle fur neck thing and tuck my hair into that.

This is sorta like the thing I wear on my hair to keep it from getting tangled: http://www.bikersden.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=1036

My wife has shoulder length hair. She bends forward, pulls her hair to the top of her head and puts an elastic band on it to hold it in place. She has done this for decades. It however means that she has to wear a larger helmet to fit all her hair in. A helmet that is not properly fitted is not as safe. I have tried to get her to try a helmet liner (Silks or any of the others on the market) but so far no luck. She has been my riding companion for more than forty years so I guess I better cut her some slack.

Silk helmet liners are good for what your wanting as well. Can be found online at motorcycle sites, as well as sporting goods stores like REI, etc. Sold for use in motorcycling, as well as bicycling and climbing, etc.

Or go for the "smooth" look like me...LOL:shocked:

Helmet hair - the bane of female riders!! I think it is so unfair that guys get it too and it never looks as bad! Spyder is my first ride too and I love it. I bring a hat along that I can put on for short stops. I found a fun one that looks good on me. I've even gotten compliments on it. I bring a spray bottle along for longer stops. I just spray my hair a little and use my fingers to shape it a bit and I'm good to go. I do have a perm and that helps a lot. I've used the spray technique on both long and shorter hair. Works great.

Thank-you for all the reply's and suggestions I have gotten so far!! You all are wonderful Spyders!!!

I have more the bang problem. I can't just wet them, because I blow dry them with a round brush. "Lucky guys", you are not kidding there, sure is not fair. My husband looks great, after he takes his Helmet off, no trace at all. I will try the different do-rags, silk, caps, and all other suggestions as well. I will find something eventually, maybe, lol!!! :2thumbs: No matter what, I still love my Spyder!!!!

I just tie my hair back and go. I don't worry about helmet head. I tie my hair back when it's wet and I don't have the frizziness like I do letting it air dry when it's down. I also put in a little extra conditioner on the ends, it helps with split ends and I use a frizz serum with silicones in it to make getting any knots I might have out easier. Just remember everyone has helmet hair. So you fit in.

I wear either one braid in the back or pig tail braids. I have bangs too but I just shove them up into the helmet. Now I'm wearing my shorty for the warm weather and they braids work just fine - I do get swatted in the face every now and then but it keeps me awake :2thumbs:. I tend to doze off on long rides - car, bike - anything with motion.

Wear the classic BMW t'shirt that says:

I have a stylist - his name is Helmet!"

Joyce is right - it's part of riding. I think people notice more if you fuss too much or take forever to get on and off the bike.

I put my hair in a ponytail and thn have a leather ponytail wrap for it so I don't get all tangled up.

Thank-you so much for your responses and suggestions. I now put a do-rag on and don't worry about it anymore, lightened up a bit in the meantime. I also decided, I am letting my bangs grow out and only leaving a few strays. That takes forever, but I think that will help with my bang problem in the long run. Thanks a lot!!!!:spyder:
