F-3 bumpskid

Compared to cars and trucks, Spyders don’t have much ground clearance, and they can’t dodge roadkill and other debris like a motorcycle. This worried me enough to buy a bumpskid because we’re planning a major trip this summer. I want to avoid a surprise far from home.

The $188 part is basically just a piece of tough plastic that hugs the underside of the front end. I haven’t seen a lot of discussion of this part on this forum, so I’m wondering if anybody that actually has installed one has an opinion to share. Is it strong enough and mounted securely enough to do any good? Please?

I highly recommend it. I installed one on my previous ST and then on my current F3. Was an easy install with the included directions and screws. You have to do some drilling but a template is included. The bumpskid has saved my underside on several occasions. Don’t forget to remove the plastic from under the Spyder before you start. You won’t need them after the install.

Bump Skid

Yes, I had one installed soon after I got my Spyder RT in 2015 and rode to Cody that summer. Coming home over Beartooth Pass I hit a rock about the size of a soft ball dead center. I didn't see it till too late because a car was right ahead of me and on the narrow roads no where to go. Was a loud bang and the Spyder kind of jumped over it or so it felt, but no damage to the undercarriage. I am a believer.

But I can tell you it has done a good job on my RS. The OEM skid was pretty beat when I replaced it with the bumbskid. The OEM one covers a small portion protecting the frunk only. The bumpskid covers the whole area and on the RS has some wingtips the help direct the air flow to the radiators. I have the sraight bumbskid without all the fancy lights and it does the job. Last time I was under there it does have the telltail signs of the road hazards...:thumbup: it is worith it....

I installed one and I can appreciate it's purpose. Luckily I have not had the opportunity to test it but I will say, that it takes away about 3/8" from the small amount of ground clearance that we have under our RT's., not much to start with. Mac:doorag:

Had one on my RT and when I got the F-3 was one of the first things I installed. Way too easy to bump up against a parking stop, yeah did it on the RT and it saved my bacon (and the frunk). Easy install, too.

Very highly recommended here. Yes you lose some ground clearance but its not a big deal. I found no need to remove the stock cover from the frunk. It was not in the way of the install. The bumpskid IS the template. The instructions say to remove some screws. then temporally install the bumpskid using 2 locator screws that will perfectly line it up where it goes. You then drill out the locations of each hole. Remove the BS and add the supplied clips to each hole. Remove the plastic from both sides of the skid and re install it using all the supplied screws. It was easier for me because I had it up high enough to get under the spyder. I did the bump Skid and Sway bar at the same time. Both are must haves and should be one of the first additions to your spyder. :thumbup:

Just be sure that you install it per the instructions including drilling the holes in the frame. We have seen installs that skipped this step and, instead of protecting the Spyder, it caused damage due to the improper install.

The bumpskid on my 14 RT definitely protected me from major damage when I hit a large metal object in the roadway. I had a 1/4” deep by 10” long gouge in the bumpskid.
