So I am finally getting around to ordering and wrapping the exhaust on our 11 RTS SE5.

What is everyones recommendations? Are some better than others?

I have seen the DEI titanium and Thermo Tec stuff so far.

Was going to install some heat insulating material as well.

Any recommendation or link to the stuff you have used and where you are applying the heat insulation stuff at?

We are really having an issue with the heat coming up from the seat area and the wife is pretty misreable riding in AZ during the summer time with the heat under the seat.

This is what I used on Louise and my Spyders:

Thermo-Tec Copper.

On Louise bike I also used the copper coating:

http://www.amazon.com/Thermo-Tec-12003-Copper-High-Coating/dp/B000TXW3N0

and wish I had on mine.

I did not like the DEI Titanium stuff as it was simply too flimsy to pull tight while wrapping. Others have used it and reported ok results though.

The Themo-Tec Copper is holding up fine on our header pipes and cat bypass tubes. Louise bike with the coating looks much better but both are holding up fine.

Did you remove the exhaust to apply the coating?

i got the wrap at Discount Auto, then jacked the bike a little, started at the front and wrapped it tight. i have a 2010 Rt, i had no issues with heat coming up to the seat, just heat on the inside of the right boot. :yikes:.

I removed the exhaust to do the wrap and the coating at the same time. Also when I installed the cat bypass so that got wrapped then too. Just too much in the way to wrap the exhaust completely and do it right without removal and replace. Its only four nuts on each header flange once you have the tupperware off. A bit tight but I had no real problems with normal hand tools.

I used the DEI titanium header tape, it will out perform and out last others. Tip for installation, start on the left header and start on strait part of the header and put the tape on winding it clockwise. Wind it two full turns and use mechanics wire to hold the tape and turn the tape on the pipe till there is enough tape to cover the pipe from engine to the "Y" pipe connection with a 1/4 tape over lap. Do the same to rear header and cover the same length of pipe. I used stainless steal ties and i used two hose clamps to hold the tape at. back end. It helps to have some to feed the tape. Good luck with your project. Mike

2013 RTS how do you get to front header nuts?

Hubby wants to take off left header pipe so that he can wrap it. Also, do you replace the gasket. Doing this because of extreme heat up on my inner thigh.

SS

use ONLY STAINLESS STEEL hose clamps.... and NOT the cheap ones either.... you DO NOT want this stuff falling off during a ride, and wrapping itself around your drive-belt.....
good luck....

I did one spyder and not the other and there is almost no differences in heat readings with IR heat gun lot of work for little gain I made a double wall piece like on a open dirt bike pipe for the pipe that is very close to the leg and has a vent slot in the Tupperware that helped my leg more than the wrap did

Couple of questions.

How can you tell the difference in SS tie wraps?

What muffler gaskets are best that go in Cat converter where it connects to the header pipes?

I read that a Honda part is better. I got a pair and they look too small.

Thanks

Im looking to do as well. Sorry no links, do recommend talking to 4wheeler shops. They do lots of heat wraps on all types & tend to know more. Might even do for right price. Try combination of wrap & the heat reflective tape on the inside of panels you pull off. Be sure to clean panel properly first. Good luck

If your going to do it, you really want to wrap from back to front as much as you can. This will help keep debris and water out of the seams as it flows from front to back.

Hi Flamewinger,

Re: How can you tell the difference in SS tie wraps?

SS is non-magnetic. Other wraps are most likely iron based steel. Take a small magnet with you to the store.
