Engine Knocking

I have a 2016 RT Limited. <2500 miles. Experiencing slight piston knocking after cold start. Wondering if others experienced the same and if so possible cause? Friend with similar unit does not have same experience. Does new engine oil filter have back flow regulator? Love the new ride and want to stay alert to potential problems. Mechanic at dealership does not have immediate concerns. Using Amzoil. Changing oil and filter again as precaution. Does oil filter or oiling system have a valve that prevents oil from draining back into engine oil sump/pan when engine is shut down? After a day or so when starting I get heavy metallic knocking sound that goes away after pressure builds. Connecting rod? Hydraulic valve lifter?

If you have reported it to the dealer and they think it's OK I'd ride it. If it blows up then it's on BRP. Get the extended warranty just to cover your butt.

Have never experienced such on my Spyder. In my book it IS a dealer issue and the opinion you got stresses my BS meter.

I would break it in more with the BRP oil before going to Amsoil.wait till the 2nd or third oil change before the switch IMO.

In colder climates you may get some knocking at the beginning of starting the bike once the oil circulates the noise goes away. Should be no longer than a few seconds.

Once it warms up it sounds normal correct??

Once you switch to amsoil and break the engine in more the noise at start up gets less over time..

A knock in a new engine is rarely ever a good thing: press the issue, and good luck! :thumbup:

Without hearing the noise it's really hard to diagnose. However, the 1330 does have hydraulic lifters and it's not unusual to hear a little tapping noise when cold at first startup due to the design. Especially as the weather gets cooler. Lighter weight oils help with that quite a bit on modern motors. If that is what your hearing it's a non-issue.

All Rotax engines tend to sound like a bucket of hammers when first started...

as the weather cools more, the oil tends to get thicker. so it doesn't start to flow as fast. if it gets any worse, complain again

IMO you should leave the original break in oil in till 3000 miles as recommended by BRP before changing oil and filter. It is there for a purpose. Looks like you jumped the gun.

:shocked: BRP doesn't ship the bikes with "Break-in" oil in the tank. They always just get the stuff right off of the shelves... nojoke
