Engine issue

So, i went to the dealer yesterday to pick up my new (to me) Spyder RT-S. i got there, filled out all the paperwork and wrote the check. At this point, all was right with the world. Until..... I turned it on and took it for a little test drive before riding over an hour home.
I noticed that right out of the gate, when giving it gas, it sounded like it wanted to stall. A little further down the road, while up-shifting, the engine would lag and backfire and eventually it would catch up and lurch forward as if it were finally getting enough fuel. I took it straight back to the dealer (unfortunately not a Spyder dealer) and told the salesman to take it for a ride. He couldnt get it out of the parking lot, it stalled EVERY time he put it in gear and gave it gas. Same story when the mechanic tried to ride it. So....i tell the guy, i'm not leaving with this bike. They looked it up and found that the original buyer had ourchased an extended warranty that was still in effect an i was told that it transfers with the bike. They said they would take it to a Can-Am shop and have ut looked at. They took it in today and i still hvent heard anything on it. I was wondering, has anyone heard of this problem? And, does the fact that i havent heard anything possibly mean that it isnt something simple that the Can-An mechanic couldnt fix today? Also, while we all tried to ride it, the system wasnt showing any codes.

What year? Guessing???? You have a throttle body issue.... Is there warning lights or codes coming up...... This is the most common major issue we see.... If not should be something small..... Lots of variables but possible

Give us some more info to better help you

You said it was an RT-S but what year? Manual or SE5 semi-automatic shift? How many miles? Will they give you the previous owners contact info so you can find out if ALL of the BRP updates have been done?

It's a 2010 RT-S SM5, 6500 miles. I'm not sure they have the previous owners info. Dont really know how this dealer acquired the bike. Is that stuff logged into some sort of system at the dealer when taken in for service? If so, wouldn't the Can-Am shop know this once they get the VIN off the bike?

the service info should be in the CanAm system. Good luck and I hope they get your problems fixed soon.

I doubt that any dealer Can Am or not will give you ANY info about the previous owner. [legalities]
But a Can Am dealer can run the Vin and also put it on their computer [buds] and pull codes and such.

"major" issue? In your experience, is this something that should have me looking elsewhere for a Spyder? Or is this something that, with the proper attention from a trained Can-Am mechanic, can be resolved with no further problems?

Sorry to hear of your problem. Hopefully they can get it corrected. I think the initial ride would have been a deal breaker for me. The fact its not a Can-Am dealer, they have no mechanic to fix it, and promised they would take it to a Can-Am dealer.

The dealer you purchased from may or may not take it to a dealer that will fix it. My guess is that it ended up at a non Can-Am dealer because it had lots of problems to start with and the previous owner may have "dumped" it for what they could get.

You should get good information once the Can-Am dealer runs the VIN. Please let us know how the scenario plays out.

Fuel problem?

It sounds like a fuel problem, a clogged fuel filter or check and see what octane rating of fuel it takes, most of these use a minimum of 91 octane, the dealer may have put 85 to 87. Just trying to help you troubleshoot, hope they get this figured out so you can get back on and ride.

I have seen many new riders with Harley's and Can Am buy a bike, have someone trailer it home for them and then take a rider course or worse try riding for the first time in their driveway. If anyone thinking of buying any motorcycle is reading this, please take a riders safety course before buying a bike. Then test ride a bike that you understand and are comfortable with before buying it! I am nor say that this is the case here at all but it seams like a good place to bring this up.

Now as to this poster's issue, the Rotax Motor is a pretty good one as motors go. I'd say the issue is most likely in the main computer module worst case or bad plug wires and fouled plugs in the best case. If the dealer won't release you from the deal or if you really like the bike otherwise and it was cheap enough trailer it to a competent Can Am Dealer and chalk the expense up to life experience and the enjoy your new Spyder.

Spyderlovers in Texas, how about directing this guy to a good technician.

Considering that they are not a Spyder dealer, I'd probably keep looking. Another alternative would be to get a clean bill of health, after repairs, from the Spyder dealer...in person. Don't take the selling dealer's word for anything! The 2010s did not have the same throttle body issues that the later RTs had. That may be the problem, and it may be something else. It would be useful to see the BUDS printout and the occurred faults file. If you do decide to take this Spyder, I'd certainly renegotiate the price. If you decide to move on, be sure to test ride before you write the check next time.

I did test ride, thats the problem. I rode the day i looked at it and it ran great! I put a deposit down, got my financing squared away an went back a week later to pick it up and do the final paperwork. Then it all went to He££.

I understand now. A throttle body issue could cause sudden behavior like that, but it could also (and more likely) be something else altogether...including a load of bad gas, vandalism, etc. If you decide to proceed, get a clean bill of health from a qualified Spyder dealer on this one.

Well, i have a verdict. The Can-Am guy says its either the throttle body or the throttle body sensor. He says 2-3 days and it's covered under warranty and i'll be on the road!

Well that's some good news! They've got a direction to head off in to make the repairs, and it's covered by the warranty!

So, I called the Can-Am dealer today to get an update on the :spyder2:. The service manager was a real nice fella and knew who I was as soon as I mentioned the bike. He told me that they got it in yesterday and the mechanic was realitively certain that it's a throttle body issue. The tech was supposed to hook it up to the computer this morning to be positive so they could order the part. However....the tech had a minor diabetic issue in the shop this morning and had to be taken to see a Dr. He says that hopefully the tech will be back tomorrow so they can hook it up and get the part ordered. He tells me i'm probably looking into next weekend before i see the bike.

Glad your getting it sorted, while your in contact with the spyder dealer ask if they would run the vin and get some history. Fingers crossed for you, hope its just this minor issue and you get to enjoy many miles of fun.

Well that just proves it! You got a really sweet deal!

I did speak to the Can-Am dealer they took it to. The service manager assured me that ALL required services/updates would be done before it leaves his shop.
