New to me 2 weeks ago. This was the last beautiful weather weekend of the season. This is a new addition to keep me in the wind.
Bought a 2013 Spyder ST-S SM5 in Raleigh, NC. Did a fly and ryde back to Pittsburgh, PA. 512 miles total in 1 ½ days. Not a long ryde but enough for starters. Note, I have never been on a Spyder or any sort of trike before so this was a true adventure. Picked her up on Saturday at noon. Had a half hour of instruction from the PO and off I went – Shaky and Scared almost to death. The ride is very physical requiring a lot of body English. Not at all like myprevious motos. Rode secondary highways. Spent Saturday night in Fredericksburg. 7 AM Sunday, 27 degrees, and dark I was in the parking lot of the motel installing makeshift wiring for my heated jacket and glove controller. Adjusted the tire pressure and feeling warm and a little more stable and a bit more confident I stated out for the final leg home on the super slab. Arrived home Sunday afternoon without issues except the dire need to start making changes to suit my goal of touring and camping. Never did get my GPS hooked up. Just used the cell phone map for directions.





So far, in the past week, I have added a BajaRon Sway bar and Spring adjusters.
I am working on wiring driving lights, a remote garage door opener, and 12V powerports.
Sunday the weather forecast is for 50 degrees in the afternoon (12/6/2015) so I will be Ryding…

Yes, I remember my first few weeks on the spyder. I fought it through the turns and felt that it wanted me off...

Blue knight is right, act like you are a pendulum on the curves and you'll see how easy it is to ride.

It's funny, the spyder was my first bike (for lack of a better word). Since I've had my spyder for three years, I recently bought a dual sport dirt bike. It's comical going back and forth between riding the two. After a day on the dirt bike, the spyder feels like a heavy, un-nimble beast.... I have to relearn it again for a few minutes after the muscle memory kicks in again. Same goes for the dirt bike... The leaning goes away and I have to remind myself to push on the bars and lean into the curves. I was laughing at myself the whole time... Felt like it was day one again.

A suggested read is the thread on do's and don'ts of :ani29: ownership.

Over control is one of the things that will tend to make your :spyder2: squirrely or seeming that it has a mind of its own.

As little input on the handlebars as possible--pretend there are eggs in the palm of your hands--don't break them. A lite grip also. White knuckles wear you out and cause excessive input.

Turns, plant the outside foot on the peg or floorboard, lean slightly into the turn, knees hard against the tank area. Your speed should be such that you can accelerate slightly into the turn. If you have to hit the brakes to make the turn, you are going to fast.

True. I see a lot of guys I ride with that "shake their hands out" at red lights. Once the grip relaxes, the ride becomes a lot more enjoyable!

Spring Adjusters

The front spring adjusters are from BajaRon. Available is Silver or Red.
I bought the Silver as a contrast to my Black springs and shock tubes.
A very simple and effective change to the shock tube.
On Ron's page the adjusters are listed as RT. I bought them as ST.
All you have to do is send Ron the diameter measurement of your shock tube and he will hook you up.
