DPS Recall

Okay, I'm sure there is an official thread somewhere in the forums, but I'm looking for information regarding your results from having the recall done.
I finally had my DPS unit replaced a week ago and I have to say the new DPS unit sucks, it took all the feel of the steering away, when cornering hard, the steering is entirely too quick now, at least before the steering had more dampening, now it seems like the bike want to jerk the entire way through a hard corner. Has anyone else had this happen after the recall was completed? I never had a problem with my DPS and should have left it alone, I'm very disappointed by BRP for this stupid recall and had to wait almost 6 months to even get an appointment at two different dealerships.

I totally agree! I want the old dps back, The dealer told me they would be in contact with brp in regards to this.

Sorry to hear of your disappointing results.
My update made my spyder a little more responsive when handling but I did not have a problem with it what-so-ever. A small learning curve. The other positive thing it did was get rid of the majority of backfiring mine was doing. I was happy with my update.

Mine steers better after the recall was done. But,the first one they installed had to be replaced before it made it out of the shop. I was told they are installing rebuilt units ,and sometimes they get one that wasn't rebuilt correctly. Maybe this is the case with yours? I would contact the repairing dealer and tell them you not comfortable with the way it steers.

Maybe it's just the fact that I'm not used to the steering yet, I've had 6500 miles on my spyder before the recall, I might just need to give it a chance. I just wish it didn't feel like you had so much power steering the entire way through a turn now, I'd much rather have the dampening back.

Actually, they caught a bad unit right at the dealership, the shaft spun and they had to put a second new unit in before I could leave, took almost 4 hours at the dealership to replace it a second time

Hmm... may DPS's are like Facebook... you hate when they change the page but after a while you get used to it and don't even remember the old version! :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

I had about 6000 problem free miles on the old DPS and now have about 5000 miles on the new unit. At the speed I ride from 0 to 80 the new unit is a big improvement.

To anyone who says they never had a problem with their DPS, I have to ask if you are sure it ever worked at all? In the case of our PE, I don't believe it ever did.

Maybe you've just gotten used to having to muscle it around corners and now that you don't have to, you could easily be over-steering. I've heard of more than a few people who had to adjust to the new DPS to avoid over-steering. You may also be gripping the handlebars too hard. Try relaxing your grip and easing the Spyder around corners.

I haven't had any problems with mine and am of the opinion that the DPS now performs as it always should have from the beginning.

Seat time will solve it. I had the same intial reaction as your's, it's long forgotten. Ride on!

Never had a problem prior to the recall, no noticeable change after the "new" unit was installed.
Didn't know they were installing rebuilt units, don't think I'm happy about that.

Mine worked fine, but they had ordered enough to cover their customers so I went ahead and had it done. It went from having some reaction lag with the old to almost seeming precognative with the new. Really snappy with the newest position of the handlebars. This machine is just different from a motorcycle. The 2 major differences to me are the loss of 2 wheeler lean, but I do find myself just as animated trying to defeat the nanny. Road condition can really ruin this machines and probably all other trikes feel, especially road ruts. With the center wheel and outboard wheels riding, climbing and diving the rut surfaces differently, there can be some turbulence. That's definitely a time to loosen the grip and ride it out.

Thanks everyone for your input, sounds like I just need to give this new DPS a chance, I am definitely over steering the bike, I was only stating I haven't had the issues that led to the recall in the first place, my bike never went out of control switching lanes and I just assumed the bike was supposed to handle the way it did in hard turns. I am very happy with my Spyder and recommend them to everyone

I never had a problem with my DPS either and had the recall done as well. At first I had the same feelings you do, as I could look over my shoulder to check traffic and be in that lane quickly. :shocked: Seat time is the definite answer as now I realize that I was actually exerting much more effort when steering my Spyder before.

The big thing is to make sure the install was done right. I got about 24 miles away from the dealer when my new one started acting up. Turned around and rode it back. They had to recalibrate the Steering Angle Sensor and Torque Sensor, but after that everything has been great. First clue you have a problem is if your turn signals will not self cancel after making a turn.
