Dogs and the art of the nap


I don't sleep well or much.
It is a condition that I've had ever since my High School days.


We've always had at least two dogs, sometimes more.
In all the years and all the dogs one defining characteristic is evident.


Dogs know how to take a good nap.
It isn't just about being able to fall asleep anytime, but they seem to have an uncanny ability to know when the weather is gloomy, overcast or when it's going to rain all day and they won't miss much if they nap.


Those are days they choose to make their customary several turn circle and lay down for a good long nap.
This ritual turning around is something that I think most dog do. Maybe they do it to ensure their bed is safe as our Vet once told me or they do it to let anyone who is watching know that they intend to sleep and don't want to be disturbed.


Today it is raining.
We are getting ready to go on a little vacation on our Spyders tomorrow.
I didn't sleep well last night.


Pardon me, while I turn three times around on my Lazy Boy and close my eyes.

Dogs do only 3 things: eat, sleep, excrete. Well . . . bark, play and comfort us, too. My dog, Fancy Pants, also guards our yard from rabbits and squirrels. She gives the robins a pass, though. She goes in circles when she wants something, or to respond "yes, please" when I ask her if she wants something. Like she stands at the door and I ask if she want "outside" and she says "yes, please" by turning around.

Many theories why but ....I think they are flattening things out and checkeing that no one is following....:roflblack: but their timing is spot on....:thumbup:

Brings back some great thoughts from when I had dogs. They do know how to nap and I always noted the "roundabout" before finally settling down.

Now I have cats--sorry. I do believe they sleep about 20 hours a day. Each cat has its favorite place(s) and if its quiet, I always know where to look to find them. In summer, they like to follow the sun reflections and will move with them in order to stay warm.

He was there first; his hip makes a fine pillow for Ann, who fell asleep after he did. I think they both nap at the expert level!!

There's nothing better than taking a nap, with the one that you love.
