• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Does anyone have any interest in ...

spyderCodes

a device that connects to the diagnostic port of a Spyder and is capable of displaying the activity on the CAN-BUS as well as the list of stored codes.

The reason I ask is because there is now available a CAN-BUS version of the Raspberry Pi.

Don’t worry if you have never heard of it.
Raspberry PI is a bit nerdy but basically it is a small self contained computer.
From the spec sheet it appears to be able to be programmed to read the CAN BUS;.

What it probably won’t do is clear codes or write to the system in any way.
While that is possible, I wouldn’t even attempt it due to the havoc it could cause.

Anyway today it is raining and I was just wondering if anyone would find something like that useful.
I am not really sure about it.
Oh, the hardware is around 300 bucks.
.saelig.com

I’m pretty certain I can read the goings on of the CAN-BUS because I’ve done it with a much less sophisticated thing, but I don’t really know what it would be actually useful.

BUDS can upload information regarding engine performance, the time in specific gears, history of rpm, etc.
I don't have any need for all of BUDS, but I might be interested in copies of the engine data.

While I'm curious: I'm also concerned...
I remember a story that I heard a L O N G time ago...

I think that a lot of caution is necessary in this endeavor. nojoke

Interesting. ...

would be nice to see the goings on there even if you can't change it. But at that price may be out of reach, for me anyway. Quick stop at a Friendly, and I stress friendly , dealer and they can get you a print out. Still would save up for one....

It does sound interesting, but I'd want more information about the various kinds of useful information you could draw from such a device before I'd invest in one.

Every time I take my Spyder to the shop I ask for a BUDS read-out. They always agree to that request, but I've never received one yet. And when I pick it up, I'm always so excited to get my Spyder back that I've never remembered to follow up on the request. ;)

Off-Topic, and a bit of a hijack... :opps:

Has anyone in here tinkered around with those "Raspberry Pi mini-computer things"?
I was told that you can program them to act as a cellphone jammer...
What do you know about these things? :dontknow:

Sorry... I heard about these things today from a friend, and this is a crows that knows electronics...

A Raspberry PI or quite a few other devices like them are where it’s at as far as experimental electronics is concerned.
For about 100 bucks you can buy an amazing amount of processing power.
The device that caught my eye was from Saelig.com and after looking at it I think it is probably overkill.
The CAN-BUS interface can be had for much less.

Still I wonder how useful it really is to have the read only info.
What really are you going to do with the percentage of time your RPMS exceed a certain number?
And most dealers will give you the printouts anyway if you ask.
Writing, clearing or modifying the Spyder’s programming is so far off the table for me anyway, and that limits what can be done.

I think this probably would fit into a toy that really no one needs but would be cool to have.
I’ll probably experiment with one to see if I can do anything that anybody might want.

The programming exists on an SD card so if I get anything useful I’ll just specify the hardware I used and where to buy it.
I'll load an SD card up if anybody wants to send me a blank card.
The programming will be sold at the same price as spyderCodes with a 500% money back guarantee.

That is if I can do anything remotely useful which remains to be seen.

Had an old signal generator and always wanted to boost the output and blast cars with blaring music on the boulevard with enough static to cook speakers. One look at the fine for doing that took the joy away. A SC man was recently fined $48K for jamming cell phone signals on his drive to work. Messing with distracted drivers is one thing but the potential to disrupt police and emergency services makes it a non-starter.

It would be nice to have real time data available at a glance, but I am afraid the BRP CAN bus is too sensitive to leave anything connected to the data port. My Chevy Volt works with the Dash dak, but the Scan gauge sometimes sets a code that results in a no start condition. Not a big deal for me with Tech II, but without Buds yet I would be leary. I say go for it, somebody should.

The interface would need to be heavily buffered.
I think it would be, but as yet I can not say for certain that like Quantum Theory the very act of observation will change the bus.;)

If we could read what's going on, and have it make sense to us (or at least a part of it...); it would be like a "Window into another Dimension"...
