DESS Update

Had the DESS issue and based on Steve's (BRP customer care) comment on this site I had the Module replaced by my dealer in July. Last week I received a bill for $50.00 (deductible from my BEST extended warranty). I contacted BRP about this as I feel that they should cover this since it is a known issue with the 2014's.

I was wrong :banghead:

This is their response -

Good day Les

Thank you for taking the time to contact BRP.

In response to your request, I'm sorry to hear you were having issues with your unit. There are no safety recalls or warranty campaigns on your unit. Unfortunately, since the regular warranty expired 2016/03/28, your unit is under the Best extended service plan, which in turn does have the $50 deductible. Please see attached for terms and conditions for Best.

Should you have any other questions or comments, do not hesitate to reach us by replying to this email or call us at T + 888.272.9222.

Once again, thank you for contacting BRP.

What was the part # on the dess module that was replaced?

Deanna

Hi Deanna,

From post 414 of your thread.

Deanna,

My switch did not need to be replaced only the DESS module. Part number 710004916. It was covered under warranty.
Looks like I received a newer one than you did, so I hope it fixes it for good.

Agree, but none of us should have to cover the cost of a defective part!

But it was not defective during the period of the warranty. It failed after the warranty expired. By your definition all products should be covered by the manufacturer forever. Sorry but it just does not work that way. I do not like paying for repairs any more than you do but that is the way it works.

Why? I do not understand your reasoning. I am not making light of your situation, but what world do you live in that you think a manufacturer should pay for something that is out of warranty. Regardless if it's a known problem or not.

That kind of good fortune has only happened to me once. I bought a very expensive subwoofer several years ago from one of the leading manufactures of home theater subs, M&K. M&K subs and speakers were found in theaters, music studios and they worked directly with Lucas Films. Long story short. The sub was warrantied for 5 years. Year 6 it quit working. Sent to manufacturer in California (M&K would not allow anybody but them to work on their equipment) for repair. They had a known defective part and most subs went out in three years according to them, therefore fixed under warranty. Mine hung on for six, one year out of warranty. But because it was a known problem they fixed it for free and paid for freight to send it back, they also reimbursed me my freight cost for sending it to them. This is the exception to the rule. I was very pleased with that outcome and I told the world I would for sure buy from this company again. A little side note to this. M&K is no longer in business, maybe they gave away to much free stuff.

The other side of that good fortune.

I own a 2013 Ford F-150. We had a very mild and snowless winter. I am not sure I even used my rear window or side mirror defrosters until........... it's late February and we get some freezing rain. I turn on my side mirror defroster and, nothing, it doesn't work. I take the truck to my Ford dealer. The truck is two weeks out of warranty. The service manager says it is not the switch, it is the back window defroster grid that has gone bad and it's tied into the mirrors. I have to fix the back window to gain the use my mirror heaters. The cost for this is only around $800.00, and guess what, this is a known problem. So in the mind of many on this forum Ford should fix this, but they pretty much told me I was SOL.

i just talked to a gentleman who has a 15 RTL . retired and they love to ride all
over. 25,000 miles and has replaced NOTHING. they have been to nc, spyderfest,
branson, ia, mn, all over. i saked him if he thought about getting stranded. nope.
they go and enjoy. now there is a positive spin ! irv

If this only happened to me than I would not say anything, but since this is happening to a lot of the members on this forum (based on what I am reading) and it seems to be happening in groups this appears to be an issue that BRP should fix.

I was hoping that BRP would step up and cover this for all owners of 2014. Since they are not I wanted others to know that so they are not supprised when they get the bill.

I do not complain very often and when my rear air fitting leaked I paid the $50 and did not post a complaint, but on this issue I think they should cover it.

The complaints that you see in an open forum, often will seem to "amplify" the scope of a problem...
If the part fails during the warranty period: it's a covered repair.
I just don't see what else you can expect. :dontknow:

We just got back from the Rendezvous Sunday. Were you there?

I agree with that gentleman as we have over 43,000 miles on our 14 and will go anywhere. I do not worry about getting stranded. If something happens (like it did with the DESS) I will deal with it.

It was Fixed

Your problem was fixed under the terms YOU agreed too. If you were concerned about the $50.00 deductible you should not have signed up for the extended warranty with those terms clearly outlined. You paid $50.00! Not worth complaining about!:lecturef_smilie:

yep. got there sat at 10 for laser align . didnt count on warranty repair.
