Just adding a piece of information for the discussion.
1. I can confirm that DESS CAN be disabled. Once done a normal chipless key that fits the ignition lock will start the bike.
2. I can also confirm that re-enabling the DESS does NOT remove the previously learned keys from the DESS module. They still work as they did before and the chipless key does not.
3. I can confirm that in the event of a DESS fail, connecting a megatech licenced version of BUDS in engineering mode can disable DESS and the bike will then start.
My take on this is that publicly available software exists to disable the DESS system while the bike is in lock down mode. As such the DESS system is useless as a theft deterrent for technologically inclined criminal elements. The only folks DESS is having an effect on is the owners, by disabling their bikes in the worst possible locations.
I really think BRP needs to rethink the option to have their dealers disable DESS on customer request.
As I now am familiar with the workings of DESS and the programming of keys in BUDS, I have no trouble offering this service to my customers on request. As BUDS resides on my laptop that I travel with, I will likely bring the MPI-3 device with me in case anyone in my traveling party is disabled by DESS or other problem on the road away from home.
This may have been explained before ( I apologize ) , but what is the " MEGATECH LICENSED VERSION " and do any or some or all dealers have it..........It's wonderful to have someone add to this THREAD that actually tells us something useful ......Again Thank you........Mike
How would you like to visit Galax VA? Good excuse to ride some wonderful roads in the area.
Looks like the stuff needed to disable the DESS is available. I'm going to see if I can find out just how involved it is. If it's not stupid I may spring for it.

I am not a fan of the DESS, and have been a proponent of shutting it off. No doubt they could still have issues, but it seems that Can Am may have it sorted out. Why even bother disabling it.
The latest module is $125 MSRP. Install is not difficult but does take a little time. If you are totally paranoid, or simply want to have a means to salvage a trip, buy a spare and carry it with you.
What is this Cycling the ignition people do to get it to start. I'm pretty mechanical and think I know but want to be sure of steps.
The DESS Module is under warranty, have your dealership open up a case with BRP.
Please post the part # of your dess module.

Good Luck! DeannaIm real familiar with BRP warranty and policy. Parts on back order.
I will post the numbers when job done by dealer later this month.
Did you have your D.E.S.S. module replaced?my situation is a little different. My dash doen't light up, the brake light and N light and oil light light up. when i hit start nothing happens, happened a few nights ago, went to dinner and when i got back to the bike same thing happened. waited like 15 minutes tried and it worked fine. right now i have the key in the ignition hoping the bike will read it?? Its a beautiful day, and i can't ride very frustrating
Im sorry i have a 2014 RT Limited. i bought new last year. My dashboard is blank not powered up. Im still under warranty. After leaving it alone for about an hour i put the key in and the dashboard lit up and I was able to start it. i wish i did get a DEES because then i would know what it is. i cam back from ride about 11/2 ago and put the key in to see if it would happen again and it did, The dashboard is blankDid you have your D.E.S.S. module replaced?
Did you get this picture on your dash: View attachment 133305 ?
The D.E.S.S. Module is under warranty, if you have any warranty left on your spyder.
What is your spyder model?
What year is your spyder?
Keep us posted and please post on this thread, I would like to keep this thread going, so new/current spyder owners can get some helpful ideas when they have the D.E.S.S. Error shows up.

Did you try both of the keys?
Check with your dealership about your 'Blank Dashboard". After you waited for an 1 hour did you get the normal start-up screen?
Did you check your fuses?
Someone else might chime in to help you with the above problem.

Paul read His post # 436........Mike :thumbup:This may be totally incorrect, but the black screen is not indicative of a DESS failure. So, the black screen had me curious.
When you got the black screen, had the Spyder been parked in the sun or a hot area. If the screens temp is excessive, the screen will not illuminate but remains black.
From experience, last weekend, I went to fire up the Spyder after it had been parked for a while. The afternoon sun had warmed up the display area. When I installed the key, I got no screen at all, simply all black. My first thought was the machine was dead. After a moment, I considered the really hot outside temps.
With the key on, and screen still black, I hit the mode button to allow the machine to be ready to run. I waited a few seconds since I could not see the screen and know for certain it was on the MPH screen, then I hit the starter and it fired up. I had to use the dial type speedo until the display cooled and returned to functioning.
Not saying this is your problem, rather simply tossing it out there.
My reference to you re-viewing it again had nothing to do with DESS ( nothing in post # 436 mentions DESS )......it was "He did try to start it even tho there was no screen" .......many folks here think my entire existence on Spyderlovers revolves around the DESS issue :roflblack: :roflblack: :roflblack: but it really doesn't........................ Mike :thumbup:I did read post 436 several times over the course of a couple visits to Spyderlovers. I shared my own experience with a similar problem. There is nothing that indicates he has a DESS issue of any kind.
If the screen is overheated, it will not show anything but black. If the person unknowingly had a black screen but hit the mode button, it would run.
Mike, go back and read post #436, #438...
Once you read them and understand what he has posted Mike, you will realize the oil light, the "N" and the parking brake indicator light are all outside the center display that is susceptible to turning black in high heat situations.
He may have a display that is failing, he does not have a DESS problem in my opinion. If he did have a DESS problem, with a blacked out display he would not be able to read or see it.
I suggest the person bring a towels or similar and a means to keep it from blowing away, cover the display when parked or park in the shade. If the problem persists, bring it in for a warranty replacement of the display.
