Dealer Rip-off?

I suspect Jiffy Lube would charge more for an oil change, too, if they had to remove your left front quarter panel to do an oil change or inspect your serpentine belt! There are a lot of things that they are supposed to check in a service that are labor intensive just to get to.

I paid $253 for the first service at 3000 miles on my 2014 RT Limited. That included the inspection, oil/filter change and any service bulletins they checked. It's an AWESOME machine -- we have about 6500 miles on ours - miles of smiles! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Also, I asked for a printout of the BUDS report from the first service and got it free as well!

Our 2014 RT is going in for a new rear tire in just under 3 weeks. :banghead:

Thats about what a friend just paid for his 3K service. I think he said $243.

A side question. Did they have to adjust the valves or where they OK?

Add $600 to $800 for a valve adjustment. A lot do not do them at 14K or 28K unless there are tell tale noises. "It's your wallet."

I did them on one :spyder2: at 14K and another :ani29: at 28K. No adjustments were needed. I feel I am out about $1,500. Do not plan on doing any on my 2011.

A shady dealer can also charge you for same, not do anything--because mostly not needed. Cha Ching!

Sorry about the sticker shock. Welcome to the world of :spyder2: upkeep.

Average seems to be pretty close to the $300 mark for oil change/filter, and maintainance service. Most dealers charge $100 per hour labor. Mine does $110 per hour.

If they did everything on the schedule it is not an unreasonable cost. If the only changed the oil and filters it is very pricey.

Sorry but I disagree. The Oil lube and filter is 1.0 hours according to BRP. The rest of the items are CHECK, none of which requre ANY dis-assembly. Total of 30 minutes being generous.

This means they roughly charged him DOUBLE what they actually worked. My experience with the dealer service at 600 was roughly the same. Once they finally took my bike in the shop, it was done in 45 minutes and I was charged the same 3 hrs and full ala-carte pricing for the oil, filters, o-rings and gaskets. Even though they used a kit which is far cheaper, even at retail.

So far my experience with dealer service has been pretty lack luster, over priced and dishonest. Judging from the stories in this forum, its par for the course and fully accepted by BRP as a way of business.

We need to quit making excuses for bad service and call it what it is if we ever want it to improve.

An oil change for my GT does not cost $400. And it uses 9 qts of synthetic, a $32 filter and it take 132 screws to remove the belly pans to drain 3 sumps. And a GT tech is $145/hr at the few dealerships that have one. I still do the work myself, but what the CanAm dealers are charging 'because they can' is not right.

Not that is fair, but look at the flat rate manual. Can a tech/mech do it in less if there are are no problems, probably. At the same time, I would much rather have a tech make sure the housing is clean before I open a resovier or really take the time to check all wheels instead of looking at them. This is where dealer confindence come in.
When flat rate get me is when they are doing 3 or 4 things and they charge flat rate of each, even thou they over lap. Engine work on a Dodge Dakota truck. Labor/flat rate $1100.00 for all. I left the truck and they called a hour and a half later to say it was done. We had a very serious discussion. All at once I had $800.00 in credits. Still way to much, but at that point I decided it was cheaper to pay then go to jail for my actions. Have not been back. Oh, I had bought the truck there as well.

You guys need to stop attending big party events and have mod and maintenance days instead. Followed by a group ride with beer and wings.

Just had my 3,000 mile service done at my dealer, Rusty Palmer. Total with tax was $244. :coffee: Tom :trike:

$120

Welcome to the world of Can Am Dealer enrichment. My 600 mile service 2 years ago was $440.00 and an oil change 3 weeks ago was $250 which included oil, filters, crush washers, and 2 O rings which themselves were $10 and $5 respectively. I'm too old and creaky to do the work myself so I just bite the bullet.

SORRY PAL. BUY YOU ARE GETTING SKRU'd WITHOUT THE BENEFIT OF HAVING SEX.......
i pay around $120 for an oil change at my dealer, which includes everything you mentioned.... i bought a Oil Change Kit for $90, and did the last one myself (never again).... i'll pay the extra $30 for them to do it in the future.... no messy floors, rags, disposal of old oil, etc etc etc.....
i don't know how some of these places stay in business when the skru so many people so ofter....
my advise... try to find another service center that won't ask you to bend over and grab your ankles.....

Or dealer charges about $200 for an oil change which is fine IMHO.

I pay $57 for the SM5 kit and do it myself. It takes all of 15-20 minutes since i dont run with the bottom pans. In the end I KNOW it was done right and the oil level not over filled. Also, I end up with an extra quart of oil for topping off as needed.

If a professional shop is only making $30 on their work I would worry about the quality of their work......but that's just me.

Sorry about the sticker shock. Welcome to the world of :spyder2: upkeep.
Seems to be just as expensive as maintaining a BMW motorcycle at a BMW dealer. Labor rates vary by location/region. $90.00-$110.00/hr seems reasonable. $150.00+/hr. is insane. Hope the dealers are really doing the work and not just checking the box on the service sheet. The reality is that some degree of tupperware needs to be removed and replaced to service a Spyder. Time=Money. My dad always said " You Gotta Pay To Play".

My 2014 was in the shop for some warranty repairs so I decided to let them do the 3k mile service themselves. They charged me around $250 for the full service. I don't like it, but it does seem to be fair given the realities of today.

Any service type item, mod, or add on I do myself. I wont go to the dealer unless something is actually broken. Big time rip offs.

Too bad BRP hasn't looked at what their dealers are doing to us. Should be a set rate across the industry. I will not be going back to that shop. And they never even offered a BUDS to me.

Need Action

Brp should definitely take action on all the different pricing, and the bad service at dealers. Usually only have one or two techs with a low knowledge base of the RT. Who knows if the full service is even being done? Yes they are probably changing oil but are they checking everything else. I've been to three different dealers and it's always the same, not so good service and undertrained techs.

Labor rate will always be driven by the area the dealer is in. It would be unrealistic to expect a dealer in NYC or LA where overhead costs are through the roof to charge the same as a shop in Podunkville.

Just had my 2013 RTL in for 14000 service which included the Valve Adjustment...........get ready..........$1200.00:yes::yes: Thank god I prepaid it so I walked out for nothing. At least the 14s don't need valve adjustment!
I've got over 16,000 miles on mine and my dealer told me not to bother as the five or six they had done required no adjustments whatsoever.

Oil Change Rip Off

I agree with JC.......
The Spyder is a Maintenance hungry machine....but if one has time and patience...a bit of elbow grease invested in the machine you enjoy to ride is well worth and to me ...ya can't put a $$$ price on the satisfaction.
