Dave & Teddy's Most Excellent Adventures 2012

Lamonsters Bar-B-Q 2012 Part IV

So I figured we'd take up the rear since we were dead last at getting there, but other Spyder Ryders wouldn't have that, cause they wanted to see the lil guy in action, so I was told to go ahead while a Spyder or dozen waited for us to take up position in the middle of the pack. Either way, we would have been happy, as long as we made it, and by golly, with little time to spare, and an angel along the way, we did just that.

So, we started this 'Epic' Adventure at 4am in Cincinnati, and now it was 9:15am and we were 300 miles from home, and starting on the first legg of what was to become another close to 300 more miles of ryding, and that's including famous roads such as the Rattler, Hellbender, Cherahola Parkway and of course the world famous Tail of the Dragon all in one days ryde for the Tedster & I.

I was a little worried about being too tired to continue, as I'll admit right here, about a dozen years ago, I fell asleep while driving my 94' Mustang GT ragtop with 5 liter engine & 5 speed manual, had it at 65 on cruise control and ended up slamming into a guard-rail dead on, on the side of the highway. My buddy and I survived this tragic accident without a scratch on either of us, so NO-ONE can tell me I'm not a blessed man:bowdown: But this taught me a very valuable lesson about driving while tired. Its actually the main reason I decided on the Moto-Mate camper, as I know when on any trip, when I start getting tired, I can just find a nice safe place off the highway, hop in & take a nap whenever needed, and believe me, thats just what we do, and have done many times in the past 2 years of Spyder Ryding.

But this was different, seeing so many Spyders and familiar faces, our adrenaline was a pump'n and we were rare'n to go, so go we went. Oh what a wonderful ryde we had, as did so many of you, our fellow Spyder Ryders:yes:
I was shocked to learn at one of the stops that someone actually got a ticket while on the Dragon I believe :yikes:

Lamonsters Bar-B-Q 2012 Part V

As we started on our journey, I noticed a black & white (dead give away right there, I shoulda known) RT pulled over on the side of the road, with another Spyder there helping & I thought to myself, "How awful to break down before even getting started." Little did I know at the time, but it was my buddy from back home, Jesse. He had wanted to ryde down with Teddy & I, but since I had to work on Thursday, and hadn't planned on leaving til after I got some sleep, we just couldn't cink our timelines so he trailered his 2010 RT-S to Lamonts.

I had just been at our local shop a couple days prior, when ShelbyDave was in town and wanted a travel cover for his RT, so Teddy & I took him on a little scenic tour and ryde ending at the shop so he could get his travel cover. When we were there, and I was talking with Aarron, the owner, he mentioned that Jacob, the Service Manager was in the back working on Jesse's RT as we were speaking. He had recently gotten a new trailer and was having them wire it up for him, and I'm guessing this is where his electical problems derived from. Such a sad happening, for him to miss out on such great ryding. Jesse, if your reading this bud, I truly am sorry and if you want to go back down for a weekend trip, just let me know and Teddy and I will be more than happy to ryde with you and show you around, as I deffinately want to do the Rattler & the Dragon again :2thumbs:

I was just looking on KillBoy's website, and found our pictures from the days ryde on The Tail of the Dragon, with Lamont leading us and MrOrange (Dale) right on our tail. http://killboy.photoreflect.com/store/Orderpage.aspx?pi=04RK01RM0J0564&po=564&pc=734 We're on page 16 and in the last shot of us, you can clearly see 'The Tedster' was sit'n tall & enjoy'n the ryde.

TBC. .......

Oh yeah, no doubt it had an effect

So you had to do the ride day with the trailer??? Do you think it affected your ride?
You know, we had a test ryde with following Lamont down The Rattler last year following him from the Bar-B-Q to Maggie Valley & that too was with our camper in tow. I learned then that the way we pack the camper makes all the difference in the world. I'm thinking the additional weight on the rear end helps keep it stuck to the road. Granted, we loose a little on acceleration, but we only lost sight (for a second) of Lamont in one turn, so we must have not done all that bad:yes: Have you ever tried keeping up with that man:doorag::shocked: Lets just say, :doorag::yes:ITS A THRILL:yes::doorag:

With my level of experience, I'm not only in awe of those traveling the distance to attend, but equally amazed of those possessing the skill to navigate Lamont's ryde. I am SOOOO impressed. Can't imagine hauling a trailer and a pup. (tho next year I plan to travel with my pup and will be here asking your advice).

So back to our story: Lamonsters Bar-B-Q 2012 Part VI

So we passed right by Jesse sitting on the side of the road, not knowing it was him, and later he said he saw us & waved but I had no clue and the entire ryde, I kept looking for him with no luck, so I just figured he was way ahead of or behind us in the pack and eventually we would catch up with each other at one of the stops....... but that never happened.

So we had around 96 Spyders all in a convoy led by a police escort (only out of the parking lot & city) and with Lamont in the lead and us in the middle of the pack. (Hmmmmm, I wonder, when Spyders congregate, is it still called a pack? I know if its Black Widows & your the only male, your called dinner-LOL) I have to admit here, this original road out of town wasn't all that enthusiastic of a road, and I was getting worried about being so tired, as I could tell my eye lids were feeling very heavy. But within a few more miles, with the ryders in front and I think behind us as well, getting some pics of The Tedster, as at times, he'd stand up and pose as we rode along, while others he'd just sit there taking in the scenery and all the wonderful smells along the way, we were at our first stop.

This is where Lamont gave his now famous "Don't look in the ditch, trust the Nanny" speach to all of us as we congregated around him at this first stop. He then told all of us that we'd be breaking up into two seperate groups, the first group being comprised of the "Spirited" ryders and the second group being comprised of the "Flatlanders":roflblack: I laughed out loud as I heard this, but he was right on the money. (Later the next day, Spike from Florida even commented how he was in the 2nd group and he still felt he got his work out for the week on the Dragon & there's nothing like that where he's from-LOL)

After Lamonts speach, Teddy & I aproached him privately and with a BIG GRIN on my face, I asked him, "So, after last years ryde following you to Maggie Valley, before we left you told us we were going on a Nice, Leisurely ryde, and we were in triple digits :yikes:trying to keep up with you:shocked: which group should we really be in this time?":roflblack::roflblack: He laughed at this and said, "Man, I just love that road and it just got me (which I totally get) but this time, it'll be broke into propper groups and I think you'll do just fine on the 'Spirited' run." he said with a chuckle;) Teddy & I agreed with a smile and went to mount up.

Hey y'all, we're alive, just not so well - Tell me if you see what I think I see

I was gonna start by saying I'm not complaining, but the more I thought about it, that'd be a lie:opps: I AM complaining damnitnojoke:roflblack:

This Axle Bolt issue has got me beat and at a frig'n loss:yikes::banghead::helpsmilie::cus: I really appreciate talking with you earlier today doc (Dave) as I haven't given up yet, just taking a break with Teddy in my lap as we watch the Bengals home opener today being played right across the river from us and grilling out some pork chops. :p:bbq::thumbup:

My neck is still sore, but a little bit more mobile without too much pain. Going to chiropractor tomorrow & he can hopefully fix whatever my issue is:pray:

I'm a little more concerned with Teds Red Sled, as I believe that while I was underneatch yanking and pulling some more on the axle bolt, that I discovered another issue. I noticed that the rear sprocket has a couple of cracks in it, at least thats what it looks like to me:shocked::yikes: Is this what Im actually seeing? :dontknow:If you can tell from the pics, 2 different spots look (to me) like they have visible & physical cracks. Is this normal? Is this a major issue? I can't really recall reading too much about this:dontknow::hun::banghead:nojoke:cus:

Can't tell from the pictures, could be drool marks or could be cracks. Dirt marks will clean off, I'd try that first. Cracks can usually be felt if you scrape across them with a fingernail. If they are cracks...even just surface cracks from the casting process, I think they should eb taken care of. I'd ask the dealer his opinion, or have him contact BRP.

Dave, I've no experience with a crack like you've shown, but would think it of sufficient concern to have it checked out.

This is in fact the case, as I scraped my fingers over them and you can feel a bump where the lines are. Guessing this means that the rear sprocket needs to be replaced?:dontknow:

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Surface defects and ridges can collect crud and look a lot like cracks. Glad yours was a blemish rather than a crack.

Now about this Axle Bolt Removal - - - Any Suggestions???

Lower the Spyder to take the weight off the rear wheel. Use a block if needed. As soon as the tire lifts a little, the axle should come loose. Slip it out, then finish jacking things up. Don't forget to disconnect the ACS sensor if you take the rear shock loose to drop the swingarm.
