Cruise RPM

Hi everyone. I know the Spyder RS enjoys higher RPMs; so what RPM do you cruise at?

What do you think is a good normal RPM range for riding your Spyder GS/RS?

Thanks.

thanks for the notes on this thread so far guys... Wow, the Spyder really does like the higher RPMs!

Yesterday on my ride I was usually on around 4000 and I noticed once I dropped to 3000-3500 or so, it didn't enjoy it, so I kept it up at 4000-5000.

thanks.

She's a lot happier in that 4000+ RPM range. Get's a little boggy below that.

I too have noticed that higher RPMs feel better. But where is the sweet shot for the best fuel mileage?? I still only seem to get about 26 to 27 MPG... I have been thinking that I had the RPMs too low.

I like to keep it under 6000, over that my Spyder can really start eating into the MPG.

The Spyder is rated 25 / 33 MPG I think :dontknow: so as 26 is on the low end, it's not too shabby. If I do strictly freeway two-up I get about 32 - 33 and if you add pulling about 300# worth of trailer I get about 28 - 29 MPG. Typically though I get about 27 - 28 MPG of mixed riding, two-up/one-up and freeway/streets. The best I got was riding from Flagstaff to Phoenix, 70 MPH, two-up... got about 38 MPG.

I am running a Hindle exhaust and have my exhaust pipes completely wrapped which leans out the fuel mixture some and can cause an increase in fuel economy. But I bought my Spyder for fun, not fuel savings (although it's the most fuel economic vehicle I have owned aside from my two-wheelers).

I am curious as to what is going to happen to my fuel economy after I get her back from getting the update. What have others experienced? :chat:

Right now, it is too early to tell ( all the updates and a new DPS ) but the mileage seems to be much better - well over 30 and its not been all downhill. :D

Good to see that the weather let you get out and ryde. :2thumbs: As has been stated before, the Spyder, like most motors, runs best at about half of redline rpms or more. I think max torque is some where around 6500 rpm. Doc says that the gas mileage drops off at more than 80 mph (130kph) in 5th gear.

What do we cruise at? Whatever it is revving :D Yes it is a revver. So's my Beemer. Love 'em both!

I posted my speed at what gear I ryde in on another thread somewhere, and am trying to remember it now. This may not be exact, but it should be close.

25 mph or less, 1st gear
25 - 35, 2nd gear
35 - 50, 3rd gear
50 - 65, 4th gear
above 65, 5th gear

If I recall correctly, at 55 mph in 5th gear the engine is turning about 4400 rpms.

Bah..

Sometimes I putt around and sometimes I putt with higher revs... Doesn't really matter to me... as long as the Spyder isn't "chugging" I figure I've got enough revs to play with...

My bike sits at 5500 rpm at 75 mph...

I have found that the bike 'feels' most comfortable between 4000 and 5500 rpm, cruising or otherwise. As far as optimal mileage goes, you probably want to be within this range as well. I used to get 26 mpg with the bike, but the mileage got better after the first 1000 miles...guess there's something to the break-in period.

I also have a juicebox and this allows me to play with the richness of the mix...the bike does run differently...I have seen a mild increase in mileage with better performance.

I'm not one who runs the bike over 6000 rpm for any period of time.

Hey there guys, thanks for the comments.

SpyderWork: I will keep those ranges in mind and try them out.

Hi Dan:

A couple times I noticed I was 'chugging' as you mentioned, but quickly realized it and corrected with more throttle. Now, I never go into the 'chugging' rpms. Yeah, there is no need to be in boggy low end, since the power and rpm range is so high and available on the spyder! :)

I think a lot of it goes on 'feeling' how the machine reacts to the rpms we give it also, good point. I'm in the break-in period now (just 196km on the engine thus far), and I'm going by the BRP manual. I hope to get a baseline for mpg before and after the 1000km period.

Cheers,
Dean
