Cross country trip...

Planning on a cross country trip from AZ to OH to visit mom and family in Sept. Though I've made the trek before many times in a car, I'd like to do it on the Spyder. I ordered a trailer and hitch and preparing for it. One thing though, I'm nervous as heck! Never rode cross country in the open. Any words of wisdom and what I should have to make sure my Spydie makes it there and back okay? Definitely want to make sure I have all my bases covered!

I just got back on Sunday from a 6,035 mile trip from Memphis to California up to Seattle and back to Memphis. My big surprise was the range of conditions I ran into temps from34 to the 90 and high winds in Oklahoma had cross winds over 50 mph. In all those conditions my Spyder RT was flawless, no problem at all. I was ridind with a friend who has a GW 1800 2wheel and he commented on how straight the Spyder ran in the wind.

For me this was a great trip and the Spyder was the perfect ride for me.:2thumbs:

For peace of mind you may want to put Ride-On in your Spyder tires. For the trailer get a spare tire, small jack and lug wrench. May also want to keep a Reda gas container in your saddle bag or in the trailer. Two of these (2 gal) fits perfectly in the left saddle bag. It will give at least 50 miles additional range in case you run low on gas and no stations close by.

I'm not ready for this, but do you think the RS would perform as well? I would like to ride up to Flatonia (about 1.5 hours in a cage). There is a frontage road for some of the ride, but not all, so I will have to get on the highway.

Some suggestions: Make sure you have good rubber.

Oil changed and ready? If not have dealer do it and perform the usual cursory checks.

Gear: Have the whole ball of wax--hot weather, colder weather, rain gear. Textile gear has you covered--liner in, liner out--water repellant.

A mesh jacket in addition, if you think your going to get hot.

I have never been on an rs but I think if you are comfortable it should do great. I was concerned about riding at interstate speed but after a few hours it was fine. I was surprised how fast I got used to traveling at over 75 mph and how well you get used to some tough conditions. On my next trip I will plan more non interstate miles I like to see the towns. I also plan to stop and get off the bike every two hours, I found that 500 to 600 miles was enough for me each day,

I just rode from Los Angeles to Ohio, and went down through Arizona. The Spyder was perfect in all conditions, rain, snow, hail, winds, etc. I second the gear thing: pack for everything, just in case. Rain gear, gloves, full face, etc.

I'm not a big fan of interstate, so whenever I could I jumped off onto old route 66, 55mph and two lanes. It slowed me way down but I enjoyed the change of pace.

Oh, I was riding the rss, by the way.

Thank you for the input all! Gonna order some more goodies for the RT and the trailer (spare). Have all the riding attire needed and of course have my XM Radio! Oh shoot, almost forgot....need to get the GPS ordered and installed! Getting excited here, but still a little nervous.

Hi there.

You may want to take a few extra fuses for the fuse box on the RT, a couple extra relays would be a nice to have. Ride-on in your tires is always a bonus.


Before you leave be sure you have your Spyder serviced if you are close to the service period - or line up a Dealer on the road while traveling. :thumbup:
