Could using a car tire void your warrenty?!

I was told by a friend today that he was told by a local dealer that if he installed a car tire (225/50/15 Kumo) on his spyder, he would be have to sign a waiver letting him know that his warrenty would be voided. The dealer stated that there was a bulliton out about this. Funny thing is , when I got the call, I was at another dealer about 30 miles away getting the same tire installed on my spyer (both 2014 RT's). I was told nothing about any warrenty issue, and told that everything was fine. Has anyone else heard about this?

There are a whole lot of others out there that have installed "car" tires on their :ani29:'s.

In the scheme of things, I don't see BRP getting involved in anything like that.

Dealers do like to make statements like you quoted above in order to CYA or to have an excuse not to keep the customer happy.

My dealer just says that he won't install a non-BRP tire. Period. :yes:

The sun may not rise, tomorrow, either. . . but I bet it does . . . I suspect if you live in a state which requires motorcycle tires on motorcycles (some do) you might have an issue with your insurance company . . . but they would be hard pressed to argue that in a state where it is legal, unless there was a written requirement in the policy.

A counter point: Since the :spyder2: does not lean, it might be a good argument that "special use" motorcycle tires are not required. It would seem to me the "g" forces on the tire are different on a :ani29: than they are on a motorcycle and similar to the forces that are experienced on cars.

Just take a look or search for all the tires threads on this site. Believe me they go back ad nauseum. Do you really think all this discussion would be going on if all of the tires discussed would void your warranty or null your insurance?

Total BS, and 1/2.:roflblack:.....this is a scare tactic because the dealer makes ...ZERO...on the tire sale. Moss- Magnusson Act covers all the scams that manufacturers try to use against owners to force them to use the STEALERSHIPS to cover the Warranties......If your engine seizes and they say it's because you have a car tire on the Spyder so your Warranty is NULL and VOID ......well it's not going to happen they know better, because they about M-M Act also............They about it, how many Spyders have absolutely NO AFTERMARKET FARKELS on them.......If this dealer is correct then IMHO 85 % of all Spyders have had their warranties voided because of Farkels........NOT............................Mike :thumbup:

The only claim they could possibly make is if they can prove that the car tire was the direct cause of a failed part...and that it would not have happened with a recommended tire. What are the odds..?? Those wheel bearings will go out no matter what you run...:thumbup:

This has been my understanding in dealing with motorcycle and modern muscle car modifications....that the manufacturer must show that the modification had some effect on the warranty claim you are filing.

As an example.....many owners are putting a catch can on Challengers and Chargers....they have no effect of any type that could cause engine damage...so to void that warranty just because you did a mod is not legit. If they can show the modification caused a problem....then yeah. :thumbup:

I think the car versus motorcycle tire issue would be more associated with a personal injury claim. Any lawyer worth his or her salt might potentially point to the presence of a (supposed) incorrect tire on the vehicle as proximate cause of an accident. Just saying...

Yea, I knew that what that particular dealer said was not true. This is the same dealer that used to be great up until 6 months ago. Unfortunately, that is the precise time that they started selling spyders and hired a whole new sales staff. I have a $10 gift card that I won from them last fall that I will be giving to my friend simply because I refuse to do business with their sorry butts any more.

Hard to imagine a scenario of that nature where the brand of tire would come up. Tire condition perhaps, but tire brand?? Not likely.

I didn't say anything about a particular brand. However, it seems to me that a car tire mounted on a vehicle on which the vehicle manufacturer calls for a motorcycle tire could be reasonably argued as operator negligence in court.

I am not suggesting someone shouldn't put a car tire on if they wish. It's their vehicle and their money.

I have a car tire on our RT for 2 years and have been to 2 dealers for warranty work. No mention of a car tire at all. A friend totaled his RT last year with a car tire on the back and not one mention about it from the insurance company.
