• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Communication System NOT Requiring Smartphone?

Are there any communication systems available that do NOT require the riders to have smartphones? Yes - there are some of us who still don't own a smartphone (and don't want one either) ....

We don't care about listening to music, answering phone calls, etc. We just want to be able to clearly communicate between two or three spyders and or bikes with a range of perhaps up to 1/2 mile or so.

Thanks!

I can't say I know of one that requires a phone period:lecturef_smilie: a comms system has its own antenna to talk with others the phone is simply an option

We have the most basic Sena (SMH5) that connects the two of us. I do have a smartphone that also connects but it's not necessary; the intercom works whether I have the phone with me or not. To connect to other riders, you might have to go to a higher model of Sena but I don't think any of them would ever require a smartphone to connect and communicate. Having the phone would simply allow you to receive and make calls while you are riding, but you don't ***need*** to have one.

Based on my experience, and from what I read here, your choices are CB and Bluetooth. For driver to passenger most any BT pair will work. You'll need a newer and more advanced model to have good bike to bike communications. Distance will be an issue. I don't know how far the newest BT will reach but 1/2 mile is probably beyond their range.

Your other choice is the old tried and true CB. If your Spyder is a 2017 or earlier a BRP unit can be installed, to the tune of around $1000 total. For that you have to use wired helmet headsets. Sena has an interface unit that lets you use a handheld CB and BT connects to your BT helmet headset. That will set you back about $200 or less total for the interface and CB. Add to that the helmet headset.

What do all the other riders you go with use? A top quality BT headset coupled with a handheld CB and the Sena interface will give you the most versatility.

I think J&M makes a handle bar mount CB that is wireless and uses Bluetooth to the helmets......and includes an intercom function.

But it's about as expensive as the OEM system on the "older" Spyders by the time you add up the cost of all the pieces.

Our Sena 10's seem to work at that range without any phone involvement, Though the other couple we ride with have the 20s

I doubt any of the intercom systems "require" a smartphone. They just use the bluetooth technology as a means of communicating between headsets. Bluetooth is nothing more than a fancy short range radio on a carefully designated frequency.
