There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Carry extra gas - new Gas Can

I think its too dangerous to carry a plastic-fuel tank in the front ...
my old problem is to fill up the tank - still want this adapter (from jumper35) I think he can fill in 20% more than we do..

When I ride to spyderfest, I am gonna carry this in the trailer, It holds
2 1/2 gallons. If I was to run out of fuel, I know people talk about fumes,
but if I was to run out, does the bike start to sputter or do you instantly
shut down??

And when you are putting the new gas you carried with you is
there anything else you have to do, or it will just start up no problem?

Spyderaccessory003-2.jpg

The one time I ran out, there was no warning. It immediately died. Starting back up was no problem. Just put the gas in and turned the key. I plan on making sure that doesn't happen again, though. I always get at least 150 miles before time to fill up. With a heavy crosswind, that day was different. I could see the gas station and the hill I had to go up to get to it when she died.

A gallon of gas weighs seven pounds. This is less than half the rated weight capacity of the rear bags.

Scotty, but the one that completely fills up the side bag is how many gallons? Just one? I figured it was a few gallons that would become a weight issue...if one gallon alone, sure, only 7-8 lbs...but if you had a custom 'bag' that filled up however many liters of space there were in the bag, it should have considerable weight, no?

REDA Gas Can

Just a note for those who would be thinking about eather the REDA or Roto Pax they both use the same fill spout and cap with the exception of the green fuel stop sleve operation. Both will not allow fuel to poor until the green fuel stop sleve is pushed toward the gas can. On the Roto Pax you just push on the gas can and the fuel stop sleve will move and fuel will be dispensed. With the REDA you will need to twist the fuel stop sleve to get it to move toward the gas can, this insures that the fuel spout is in place. I have had the REDA full with fuel standing on its top for 3 days and not any sign of a leak. Another way to look at this if you do not want to carry fuel just carry a gas can and 3' section of hose and you are good to go should you have the need for fuel on the open road between gas stops.

You would be right in that case. A container that filled the entire RT side bag would weigh about 40 pounds...far in excess of the 15 pound loading capacity. Two gallons each is about all she wrote...with no additional cargo.

Learning good info from many here Scotty/Nancy'sToy, & fencepost mentioned two brands that I checked out, REDA & roto pak.
And Lamonsters video was informative and the container almost fit the way he wanted it to. I read his thread
back in 2008 when he had 3 not so good things happen to him one of which was out of gas, but the most
surprising thing was that nobody responded

What happens when we exceed the manufacture weight limits?, I looked up the weight of a gallon
of gas and it said btwn 5.92 to 6.42 pounds. Then on roto pak's web site it said the actual container
weight was 5 lbs, so looks like just one gallon should be stored in each compartment otherwise we would
be exceeding the manufactures weight
limit if we store 2 full 1 gallon containers in the side compartment to approx 22+ lbs.

So does the extra weight if it exceeds BRP's specs make the bike handle differently in an emergency maneuver?

I am considering the reda because the 1 gallon dimensions look to fit my left side carry case area (6" X 7" X 101/4)
and not take up the helmet compartment and it is also not stored above the exhaust system. The price seems
reasonable at 30 + shipping. Seems it was designed for Harley carry cases, and wondering if it is stocked in
their stores? They don't list the weight, but hopefully it is under 8 lbs.

I agree I don't wanna ride for 3 hours straight, but I also don't wanna run out of gas and be stuck or late waiting
to get somewhere over a miscalculation, or the anticipated gas station closed for remodeling. :yikes:
Carrying a gallon or two could be the ticket.

I use to reset my GPS fuel gauge each time but it was redundant of what the bike tells me when the fuel light
comes on. So now I just leave the GPS red gas icon on the map screen, and when you press the icon it shows how
far away gas stations are and in what direction.

Funny it says 35-40 gallons...for us, it's really about 30 miles...nice find though...the key to this is 'safe'...doesn't leak, fume, etc...

Not too good to have food or clothing in the trunk and everything comes out smelling like gasoline!

Don't know how I missed this thread before but I'm just now seeing it. I'm gonna buy a couple of the REDA cans to carry on local trips and maybe on longer trips as well.

I really agree with all those posters who say they don't want to ride more than 150 miles without stopping anyway but, I guess it's just my bad luck, there seems to never be a gas station available when the odometer says 150 miles. I'm sure there are stations on every corner where some of you ride but that's not the case in my part of the world. In fact, even corners are few and far between. Besides, remember that these are just gas cans, not fuel tanks. You still have to stop to add gas to the tank and that's also an opportunity to walk around and stretch.

I thoroughly enjoy being able to turn onto a lonesome road that I've never been on before without knowing where it goes. Two extra gallons of fuel will usually allow me the freedom to do that.

I got one of these cans last Aug in Sturgis.

They were set up on our lot at Blackhills Harley Davidson in Rapid City, and the guys actually gave me one to try out for free.

This can is just great! I have used it several times since the and it has never leaked a drop or let any fumes out ether. :2thumbs:

I think it is one of the best ways to carry an extra bit of fuel with you on a bike for sure.

Filled my REDA gas can and left 3/8" air gap and took it to the local post office and had it weighed 7 lb 3.5 oz.

I had almost forgot about this cool little can until this post reminded me about it again.

So.....

I just got off the phone speaking with Ron Reda, and ESI Cycle Products will now be a dealer for the REDA spill proof gas cans.

We will be having a Spyderlovers introductory special until 2/20/10 of $24.95 for you Spyderlovers that would like to order one of these handy, neat little cans.

They will be on the web site over the next few days, however to get the Spyderlovers introductory offer you'll need to call us @ (518) 785-5810 and let us know you're a Spyderlovers member.

Yes it's a custom built by Fuel Safe. I sent them my RS trunk and what I wanted and they sent back what you see. The capacity is 4 gal. The filling is done right through the fill plate on the top the tank and then is transferred to the main tank via a separate pump. The pump is controlled through a programmed timer relay. There are internal baffles so fuel sloshing is not a problem :D
That is one sweet setup there.:2thumbs: How much did that charge you for it? Someone should become a dealer for them and get a mass order in for Spyders.

What about venting? .... anything over the fill neck will get pushed into the evap can and then out the vent tube. I'd think twice before doing that.
