Cargo and Extra Fuel

I'm planning a fishing trip that will take into the Rockies so I will be riding mountain roads at high altitude. Since my STL only gets about 29 MPG here on flat land at 800 ft elevation, I'm assuming I'll get 20 MPG if I'm lucky. That's only about a 100 mile range at best. I could have some stretch of road with a gas station within 100 miles.

Has anyone seen an auxiliary tank? or possibly a strong cargo rack that I could have an aluminum tank fabricated to mount on it.

I have a Corbin split seat so I can remove the back seat and mount the rack.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Look up Mr. Orange in community. He installed a built in tank in the frunk. Very pricy for a one-time event though.

Others, bring along spare can or two of gas. Can't think of the brand of can that most use, but others will come on with it.

Sounds like a nice fishing trip...At 800 feet with a fuel injected computer regulated with O2 sensors I don't see you loosing much mileage. That being said we have sponsors who have trailer hitch racks and there are great gas cans youcan carry along. I have this one I carry though small will get me a bit further (never had to use it) other pointer is if unknown territory fill up every chance you get...:thumbup:

When you go bring us a fish and your mpg for a spyder at that altitude for our data base..:roflblack: would be good to know for our many travelers...:thumbup:

The gas can brand is REDA. They fit in the saddlebag and are supposed to be fume free.

I don't think a Reda can will fit in ST bags. If you know the route you are taking you can plan your gas stops just use a map program and look for stations every 100 miles or so. There may be places where you will have to stop early but that beats running out. I used to carry a Reda can but I no longer do and I have gone a lot of miles without running out.

I like that "TourTank", Thanks for the info. Now if I could only find a cargo rack.
Since I have a Corbin 2pc. seat, I think the best thing to do is have one fabricated to fit where the rear saddle is since I won't have a passenger on the long fishing trips. Thanks again to all of you in the Spyder community.

i found last year on my GS riding all over the place in the Rockies even up to the top of pikes peak with the lower speeds you have to do due to the roads there you will find your spyder getting amazing mileage my gs usually gets 26 - 28 depending on how i ride i was getting 36-40 up there for 2 week of riding that is if you ride the back roads and not the super slabs any spyder if kept under 65 will do great on fuel
