There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. CalSci windscreen issues

I have a 2012 RT-S for which I purchased a CalSci replacement windscreen. I have bought their products before and been very happy with the fit and finish, but I had a very difficult time with the new screen. I removed the stock screen and with some difficulty mounted the CalSci unit. All seemed good until I tried to reinstall the trim plates. No matter how careful I was I could not get the trim panels to fit and I scratched the new screen trying to mount them. I reinstalled the stock screen and the trim panels were a snap to install. Have any other RT owners had this problem?

I have the tall CalSci windshield on my RT and rode up and back to Spyderfest with it

I installed it a while ago and it does take a little patience to get it on.....

the thing I noticed is it has no water shedding at all and when I emailed the manufacturer asking about it, they told me to use Rainx?:yikes:?

virtually every website I checked said NOT to use Rainx on moto windshields....

my ride home was virtually constant rain and I found myself 'peeking around' the windshield to see since I couldnt see thru it

go figure..... I am currently looking for a different windshield.....:mad:

Bleep! I was thinking about buying one of their windshields for my RSS..........................guess I'll take a lesson from your experiences....................and look at different brands.

I was VERY interested in their windshields... until my basic cowardice got the best of me! :opps: I played it safe, and upgreaded to a 2013 25" OEM RT piece... 100% satisfied!

So they gave you a solution and you chose not to follow the their advice because you read on the internet not to do it

I don't look through the windshield, I look over it. Wind stream keeps rain off my visor. I was told to adjust windshield so wind goes just over the top of my helmet.

RAIN-EX

I would not reccomend RAINEX for PLASTIC.......I don't care what their advice is........if it gets screwed up (which it will) they might just say it's your fault you put it on wrong.......Mike

It was a bit tricky to get the trim back on, but if you look closely, you'll it touching the arms just on the outside, but not on the inside. Just push down on the windshield and the trim will pop right on.

I mounted ours on 2011 RT (CalSci medium / clear) before we left for Spyderfest. Went on without any issue. Uninstalled old and intalled new in less than 15 minutes. As far as the rain issue I size my windscreens so that I can see over them during the rain. This is a standard in motorcycling. With the Spyder its easier because you can buy a shorter screen and raise it up when you want. I've never had a screen "shed" rain. Some of my motorcycles have windsreens with little to no slant. Not saying some screens don't shed water but I've never experienced it. As far as rain-x or other products, Ive never tried them.

On a side note my wife and I both drive the Spyder sepratley and we both love the CalSci screen compared to the stock.

Read CalSci Website

There was a lot of pro and con discussion of the CalSci windshields last year, and I still want to get one. I was convinced of the advantages of the the vent hole design to reduce back pressure and turbulence. The hole is not there to provide fresh air, as some other louvred/vented designs provide. It is designed to provide a still-air rider area.

As for the use of Rain-X on their shield, I would feel completely comfortable in following their suggestion. Their website has a lot of technical info about their product, including plastics, optics, aerodynamics and design. Procedures for cleaning, repairing scratches and polishing. And links and phone numbers for a dozen other windshield manufacturers so you can compare their products to his. Stuff you don't see on most commercial product sites. The owner is an engineer and is working on a PhD in physics (according to the website).

His plastics discussion of polycarbonate vs acrylic says don't use ammonia on polycarbonates, but his cleaning formula for his acrylic includes ammonia. His cleaning formula also includes alcohol, which I believe is the basis for Rain-X. He provides a couple of formulas for cleaning solutions, a home-made one and one made from two commercial products, one of which is Rain-X windshield cleaner fluid. I would bet he knows if it is safe to use on his plastic or not. My Rain-X container says don't use on plastic unless approved by the product manufacturer.

no, I researched it on the internet, and then went to a couple of dealers in my area (HD, Honda, etc) and they all confirmed that Rainx was not a good idea - they all recommended Plexus (which I already have and use on my ryde, just never used it on the windshield)

so your point is?

oh, and the response I got from them regarding Rainx was:
We have a lot of customers who have used rainx and liked the results. I'm
not a chemist, so I have no clue what the issue with plastic is.

and as others have posted, on the Rainx website and on their product they state:
Avoid using Rain‑X[SUP]®[/SUP] Original Glass Treatment on any plastic surfaces, including motorcycle windshields, ATVs and solar panels

Well, I guess that blows my confidence level in him, doesn't it? I might still buy one of his windshields. I like the design and most everyone's comments on its performance related to comfort is good. I might even try try to learn the effects of Rain-X on acrylic--I know a chemist who is an expert in plastics.

Besides the Rain-X question; I've noticed varying comments regarding the fitment of these windshields.
Some folks have no difficulty at all; others "twist of the blade", of an apparent poor fit.
Could this be an indication of a lack of uniformity in their product? :dontknow:
(Just asking; not pointing fingers!)

I was just doing a little research on this and ran across this alternative to rain-x...
1st clean the windshield with Windex or what ever, wipe it dry, when completely dry rub bar soap all over it. Then wet the windshield with plain water and gently wipe it off. If you want to see how this works at home, do the same with your bathroom mirror and see what happens when you take a hot shower....clean dry glass! I use this method at work. I wear plexiglass safety glasses. They never fog up and when I go outside during rain, they stay clear!
I have done this on swimming mask and it has always worked for keeping the fog off the lens and I don't see how this could cause any harm to a windshield, but don't know if it would cause the water to shed away.

As for CalSci windshields I have one on my WebRyder and so I did some research on them and they use special acrylic (Plexiglas) not polycarbonate (Lexan). I will be putting some rain-x on a small area of my CalSci windshield to see how things go. Probably I put it on through a stencil so if it fogs the area after a while it will look like a frosted emblem.

I have the calsci windshield and I have always spray waxed the whole spyder including the windshield and I haven't noticed any issues with hurting the windshield. I haven't done any extensive rain testing though.
