Cal-Sci Turbulance....

Got in the Large Cal-Sci windshield (I'm 5'11"). No risers on this Spyder yet.
Took it for a ride and couldn't believe the outrageous amount of noise generated in my helmet (Shoei RF1000) :yikes: This thing is knocking my head all over the place, so much so that I was getting motion sickness :(
I only drove a mile and had to turn around and go back home to put on the original windshield.

Lamonster....didn't I read somewhere that you cut 4" off of the Cal-Sci? Just wondering if smaller rather than larger is the right way to go to fix this problem :dontknow:

I'm 5'11" too and for me it was not enough wind and it was pushing my head forward I think. I cut mine down 4.25" I'm pretty sure and it's working fine for me.

That sounds horrible...sorry to hear about that problem!

I have the BRP touring and it's low, but at 75 mph on highway, sure, the wind is significant, but it doesn't affect my ability to ride...I can still check traffic to either side of me...you do need a stable neck to ride a motorcycle...wouldn't recommend for cervical spine disc patients!

A lot of people are talking about the CHAD product...the new one...I think NMN is going to have it...

Anyone try this one yet?

I also have the large Cal-Sci and have the noise problem. However, it seems worse with the stock shield. Noise is coming from helmet. If I raise up so wind hits my neck it only makes it louder. I don't think cutting it down will solve your problem. Most likely you need a larger one that puts the air over the helmet. I'm going to try the slider for now.

There is a lot more involved here than just the height. The overall shape, the amount of recurve, the slope, and even the venting all affect the outcome. So does the rider's height, body type, and riding posture (handlebar risers). Throw in the large distance that the Spyder winshield is mounted forward, and things get aerodynamically complex in a hurry. Then there is the helmet itself. Some make more noise than others, and the angle of the helmet affects the noise and buffeting. They are built to take the wind in a certain direction, and that direction and angle only. A difficult problem to attack, and very individual. I hope you find an answer that works for you. We have stayed with the stock shield just because evrything so far seems to be a problem for one person or another. Two more possibilities yet to come...CHAD and BRP. Hope one is the solution.

I also am 5'11", with a 29" inseam. Tall from the Butt up. I also use the large with a HJC-21 "half helmet" with little turbulance. I do tend to slouch a bit when I ride and sit quite a bit back without any risers (long arms). For me an extre inch on either side would be just about right. To get a little more coverage I believe I will invest in a Laminar Lip.

Now I did notice with large oncoming trucks and winds off either bow the vent will "grunt" at me. May put a bit of the Lip on the bottom edge of it to see what happens. I can tell the vent might not be perfect, I get a cold spot right in the middle of my back where the wind comes around.

I spoke with Baker, makers of the "Wind Wings" and they hope to have something for the Spyder by spring. It would be nice to increase or decrease the coverage as needed.

Sure wish there was a screen with a gradiant RED tint on the bottom! i did notice that MM said "No shipping charges on items over $150" in their regular web site but chaged it to me on the screen.

The helmet is quiet with the stock screen but unbearably noisy with the Cal Sci. It only got reasonably quiet if I ducked way down below the windshield (nearly laying on the tank). Which is why I don't think making it higher is going to be a solution.

I just have the standard BRP and on the highway it's just too much wind in the chest....don't mind it on the helmet and don't really have trouble checking the mirrors or blind spot.

If shortning the Cal Sci doesn't fix the problem I'll probably try the CHAD next.

Baker Wings... good stuff... have used them before on Valk and Wing.

May consider the BRP Sport Touring shield, I put one on it makes a difference with whats hitting your chest, yet hasn't affected helmet noise or buffeting.

one of my customers put on sport touring shield says he loves it and he is about 6'0" tall ... i'm going to order ultra sport i think it will keep wind from scooping into my face ....and it looks cool:D:D:D

Update:

First cut 2" off the windshield with a huge improvement in buffeting and moderate reduction in noise.

Cut an additional 1" off and get no buffetting at all and sound is now very tolerable. The wind now hits the top of my helmet and there is no wind at the chest. The sound is a low hum, interestingly at about 60hz.

Think I'll leave it alone for a while and maybe try the CHAD later.

The size makes a huge difference. I had the small shield and had the buffeting at high speeds that you describe. Worked with Mark and the test he recommends to determine the correct height and decided I needed a shield 3/4" taller. That made an incredible difference. I couldn't be more satisfied with the shield now.
