Buying Advice?

I sold my 1997 Goldwing trike about a month ago and now I am ready to purchase a Spyder. I have found two different ones on craigslist:

1st 2009 RS SE5 with 500 miles on it asking $15,000 plus lots of extras.

2nd 2010 RS SE5 with 1600 miles on it for $13,000 –stock.

My question is: Is there a big difference between the 09 / 10 models? I am going to be checking them out this weekend so was wondering about any comments some of you have. The 2010 is about 90 miles away so I have to drive a ways to check it out. The 2009 is local.

Any advice would be helpful.

From our research... No difference. And frankly a $2000 savings for only 1100 more miles, for a year newer ryde... Is good  That means the factory warranty has at least a year left, and depending on the 1st day of ownership (I think that is what they call it) the 2009 could be coming up in the next six months as not having a warranty.

That said.. It depends on what those accessories are and how each bike was treated, because like I think is to be true, there are no differences between the model years.

Good luck with your choice!!! :spyder2::clap::2thumbs::doorag:

i would lean toward 2010 and do my on mods unless goodies on 09 are mostly ones i want anyway and worth something like 4000 dollars.
i would ask the seller for vin and check with a dealer see if it had any issues and ask him about the cosmetic condition and take his word. i mean it's a 2010 so how much wear and tear could it have.:D so you don't have to go 90 miles just to look.
i would feel better with 2010 at about the same price even if there are not that much difference. at least it would have 2nd generation dps?

:agree:

This is the approach I would take as well. The farkles on the 2009 may not be anywhere near what you would personally do to the machine, and then they lose a whole lot more value for you.

+3 If the extras on the 2009 are perfect for you or you think you could sell them and recoup the cost, then it may be the better choice. Otherwise, I'd go with the 2010 with a few more miles.

Advice

Thanks for your advice, I am leaning toward the 2010. The upgrades and extras on the 2009 aren't worth the extra money and the issue of the warranty is something I had not considered. I made an appointment to go see it this Sunday.

Another issue is the fact that the wife has never been on an RS. We test drove the RT and loved it, but I can't justify the extra $$s right now. So we will see on Sunday how she likes it.

Again thanks for your input:2thumbs:

Congrats selling your Goldwing!

AntelopeSpyder,
I just wanted to say congrats on getting your Goldwing sold. I looked at it a couple times on UTube. It took you a little while to sell it but at least now, that's out of the way.

My suggestion? Definitely get the Spyder with the warranty and I highly recommend the extended one as well. To date, if I did not have the warranty on my 16,000 mile 08' SM5 spyder, costs from my own pocket would be exceeding the $4,000.00 mark right now. :yikes: Heck, I only paid $13,500 for the Spyder with 500 miles on it in Sept. 08'.

Could be a problem with her.. Completely differant ride as a passenger and an operator.. The RT/verses a RS will be a HUGE differance in the confort level.. The best of luck but trust me I hope you are not thinking that the RS will feel close to the RT when in comes to confort.. Anyway again, good luck to you..

'09 or '10?

One thing to check is if the '09 has had the 600 mile service. I hear this can be expensive.

I own an RS and love it but I did test drive the RT last weekend at the Chicago owners event. The RS rides like a sport bike the RT rides like a sofa. :2thumbs: I hope to upgrade to the RT in the future but while my body is still good my wife and I enjoy the RS :ohyea::ohyea::ohyea:.

Then you need to seriously consider the Sport Rack/Backrest combo. It offers the support of the top case on the RT - that's a $500+ farkle. You should also consider the comfort of the RT - the pegs are different, seating position, and foot position.

Floorboards will set you back $500 to $1200, another $400 to get the bars in a decent position, then the windshield......

So, how are you going to use the Spyder - around town & fairly short trips? The RS is just fine - farkle it to your taste, and plan on $2K (min) to get it right - still an nice savings over the RT.

Long distance - consider the lower end RT, which you can find for under $19K, if you look.

Having said that, I have a RS SM5 - and it's great for what I use it for. My Valk is my distance hauler, and I have less in BOTH than the price of a RT.

Just my $0.02

I realize the RT & the RS are vastly different in there ride. I have driven an RS on a demo ride ( without the wife). I figure the money I am saving by buying a used one I can put toward improving the comfort of the RS ride.

I have been on the Corbin site checking out there seats and back rest systems. Also I have been considering getting a larger windshield. For the most part we will only be doing day trips and maybe an overnighter to the coast. And I will be commuting to work some.

OK.. We looked at both the 2009 & 2010 RS’s this weekend and have decided to go with the 2010. We will be picking it up Thursday afternoon. :2thumbs::2thumbs:

The person that we are buying the 2010 from has a 2008 that is all tricked out: Corbin seats, backrest saddle bags ect. After my wife sat on it the Corbin seats she was sold. So guess what my first mod is going to be? Corbin seats!

It is Offical

Ok, it is offical now we are now the proud owners of a 2010 RS.:ohyea: We picked it up yesterday afternoon and I rode it home (about 110 miles). We are going the the Corbin factory on Monday and order seats, side bags and trunk box.:2thumbs:

Thanks to all of you who sent your CONTRATS.
