Break-in of 2016 rt 1330 ENGINE

Hi Folks: I now have about 800 miles on the new engine. I have looked at the maine sched and the book details first oil change at 3,000 miles.

What are your thoughts on this matter????

If it says 3,000 miles; who am I to argue with the folks who build the bike?
I changed mine at 3,000 miles.
I sort of "Babied" the engine for the first 600 miles, and then gradually started giving it a little bit more "Right-Wrist", as allowed by traffic conditions.

I have no quarrel with what both Bob and Mike say. I would offer though that the clutch cover, a.k.a. transmission, plug has a pretty good magnet on on it for catching the ferrous metal "excess" from the machining and assembly processes and the oil filter is there to trap the non-ferrous metal excess. In BRP's defense, if they believed with reasonable certainty that a 600 mile oil change was necessary they would have included it in the service schedule. YMMV.

Well....

Follow the maintenance shcedule and you will have not problem. My only suggestions, #1 is ryde like you would normally (don't baby it) but don't hold any constant speeds for long periods of time. Keep changing your speeds and rpm's for 600 miles or so. #2 don't wait the 9,300 mile for the next oil change that they recommend. That is a bit to long imho...:thumbup:

Your right ... but still unless your season is under 4,000 miles you need to change your oil and not store your machine with old oil in it..jmo all oil tests seen here have the oils breaking down around that mark...

:ani29:: First oil change recommended on the 1330 at 3000 miles. It will not hurt anything if you do it sooner. I followed the mfg. specs on mine.

:ani29:: I also took it easy the first 500 miles. Varied the speeds and did not over rev it the first 1000 miles or so. Then--drove it my "normal" way.

:ani29:: First oil change service (after break in) was done at 12,300 (9,300 miles later). That was about 3 months time the first year. Additional oil changes were done at 9,300 mile intervals. I put on a lot of miles, so the once a year thing has not been needed so far.

Now have 21,000 so have a bit to go this season. Looks like it may be the once a year thing this year. Will do it when I put the :spyder2: to bed for the season.

:agree: You have to remember that BRP is not going to knowingly give out bad information: it'll cost them in warranty claims, and customer dissatisfaction.
This having been said: if you want to perform the maintenance chores more often than they say to: it's your prerogative! :thumbup:

I just did my first oil change @5,111 Kms today, using a BRP oil change kit.
Only a tiny amount of "powder" on the magnet, no fillings. 5 quarts of oil brought the level to 3/4 of the

"3" range.

Didn't use a drop of oil since new. I broke it in fairly gently, slowly increasing throttle and RPMs until the 1000 Km mark as recommended in the owner's manual. No engine issues at all!

The 3000 mile service will be done at something like 5500 miles. He said an early oil change followed by a late 3000 mile service was preferable to delaying the first oil change.

I'm confused, Mac. On the 13 the first maintenance is at 600 miles. Did you mean on your 2014?

I agree the ENGINE is masterfully engineered, now if the "rest of it" were engineered the same way.

My Dealer recommended to change the oil on a new 2015 RT-Limited between 600 and 1000 miles. Said it was his feelling that it is always good to get any metal shavings etc., out of the engine asap, so that is why he recommended the first change at that interval. After that go the regular intervals.

Yep! My brain is like the Spyder clutch. It slips a lot before take off.

IMO that is unjustified paranoia. I'll bet those engines are cleaner than your dinner plate when they're assembled. When I changed the oil at 1200 miles I don't recall seeing anything at all on the magnetic plugs.
