Brake master cylinder reservoir leaking

I was cleaning the bike tonight and noticed the swing arm wet and cruddy and I just cleaned it last weekend.

Looked in the right side vent and the frame is wet next to the reservoir and all down the lines going down to the master cylinder. Looks like May be coming from the caps but not sure. Anyone else noticed this?

See your dealer ASAP. Brake fluid is highly corrosive, and can cause major damage...especially to paint.

I had some around my cap I noticed at about 50 miles on my new bike.

I think the factory overfilled it a bit and/or the heat made it push out of the reservoir a bit.

I cleaned it up and removed a bit down to the proper level.

Cleaned the inside of the cap well too.

All good since then.

Yes i I know it eats paint and it's just about everywhere, not good considering was in the shop for a week 2 weeks ago.

Pulled the side cover off there's fluid down the rear wheel speed sensor harness, has already ate the paint off the frame all down the swing arm. Wiper off the frame and stream of fluid starts to run down the frame again from where it bolts to the frame


NOT VERY HAPPY!!!!! Bike only has a 1000 miles


Should I make a call to BRP or just call the dealer?

you can call brp who will more than likely tell you to take it to the dealer. Much like court the judge does not want to hear from you he want your lawyer to speak. Dealer is your lawyer. Point out all the damage and what you have found and have them deal with it. If they don't then take the bull by the horns..!! jmo :thumbup:

Suggest you call the dealer first but report same to BRP and see if appropriate and prompt action is taken. Document steps taken.

I would be quite upset if it happened to my ride. My experience with the 2011 RT Limited has been great. Trouble-free 6,000 kms so far. It was perfect duerng my recent ride down to Sonoma, California for the Spyder in Redwoods meet.

Hope my upcoming delivery of my STS next week will be a good one and will not develop any issues. Keeping my finger crossed.

Good luck to a quick resolution to your brake fluid leak.

I truly wish you luck on this one. They will be quick to fix the leak, power wash the bike and spray some black paint around. To me, not good enough. This will cause you problems for years if its already bad enough to remove the paint. They are not going to be willing to replace the bike or even major parts of it like frame and swing arm. Keep us posted but you need to be a bit firm with the dealer when you get there as to what kind of resolution you want going in.

First thing to do is to take a deep breath, count to 10, and relax...
Call your dealer. I'm sure they will get it taken care of.
Also, brake fluid is corrosive to paint, not the metal behind the paint. It's perfectly fine to clean off any spilled brake fluid from the frame and do a touch up shot with some paint.

Start with your Dealership...

As others have said...bring it in to the dealership you purchased it from. They will contact BRP and get an event/case number...KEEP THIS NUMBER FOR REFERENCE. It has been my experience that a reputable dealership will take care of the issue at no charge (if the bike is under warranty). Please follow up to let us know how it all comes out.

My dealer is pretty good one so I have confidence in the dealer but pretty upset since the bike is 3 months old and was just in for the first service.

I've been saving for this purchase for a while and was quite happy to pay cash for it. I'm in the automotive business and know things happen but Dam hate it when it's your own.

The fluid has ran down the frame and along the swing arm inside the cover where the rear line and wheel speed sensor harness go though. Brake fluid makes a mess of paint and it's down inside all the little cracks .

Dealer opens at 11 so I'll call them and see what they wanna do.

yeah I woke the wife up last night when I was cleaning it and found this and started yelling and :cus: In the garage. Guess could always be worse .

Got to the dealer and they said the master cylinder caps were not sealing. Not sure what they did but they said they have seen them leak before but not as bad as mine. So took the plastic off and gonna spray the frame with some rust preventer and some paint and put it back together. Hopefully that is it.

These little problems are little but a pain.

brake fluid is very bad for paint, it won't hurt the plastic but corrodes paint. one of the main reasons they put that plastic on cars today due to drips from other cars causing damage. NOW A DISCLAIMER if someone wanted to get even with some one all they need is a kids water gun and fill it with brake fluid, just pass the car and spray it with the fluid and keep walking, now i have never done this but it is what i have heard many years ago.

Yep but had a brake fluid was streaming running down the frame and came back after I wiped it.:yikes: Glad yours wasn't real bad, cause it really makes a mess.


I stripped off all the plastic and thoroughly cleaned the frame sprayed it with a rust preventer and repainted it.
