• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Boiling fuel, hot legs & feet, melted boot glue & passive limp home modes

Last week I added heat reflecting insulation to the back of the tupperware near my left leg to reduce the heat. There was some improvement but not much. I was then thinking I will have to wrap the pipes next. Yesterday during my after supper ride I was feeling around for all the areas that are hot and realised how much hot air was blowing out from under the seat and on the left side it was extremely hot air. So today I took a look and found that there is big opening under the tupperware leading under the seat. I do not remember that much space on my 09 GS.

I then stuffed shop towels under the tupperware into the opening to block the airflow.

The reduction of heat and the improvement in rider comfort was very big. I then removed the towels and went for another ride. That confirmed that plugging that opening was a big improvement. I am still not sure if it will be enough for me but I have decided that it will be my next project.
I would not recommend anyone stuffing towels in their Spyder and thinking it's fixed. Spill some gas on the towel and you have the making of a molotov cocktail.
Was thinking of carving some closed cell foam to make an air block for that area. Any better ideas folks?
My main concern with pugging off vents for your comfort.... is where is the heat going.. or not going.... for me.... I will not insulate the tank( at this point, the fuel tank is a heat sink) or plug anything.... until I can eliminate the sources of the heat. There are a LOT of things under the Tupperware that are not friends with the heat....ie brakes master, computer and associated controls...efi to name a few.
 
We are triple digits all week here. HIGH OF 108F. Lets see how hot this 5 year old GS gets.. And narrow down if this is exclusive to the RT/ST.

The other thread is now reporting the brake failure to the master cylinder not the reservoir. Now that makes a lot more sense. The reservoir is connected to the master cylinder by long hoses and is nowhere near the heat, but the master cylinder is in the heat.
 
Heat has to escape someplace. As we wrap, block, and shield, we create a lot of heat over a fuel and ignition source. As much as we want to block the heat from our legs, butt, and etc., we should find a way to ventilate this heat down or along and out. That should help with both problems. JMO.

You are making an assumption that there is little room for hot air to escape. That is simply incorrect. I took some time looking at the air paths. The escape routes are far bigger than the intake area. When traveling on the road there appears to negative air pressure under the tupperware. The vent around the steering column is sucking air in and so are the upper side vents.

Well you don't need to be concerned because it is not a vent. It is a path for hot air to leak out the under the seat. If you compare the size of the gap under the seat with to the size of the area intended for hot air to escape it is almost nothing.

On the bright side. Unless you plan on riding down south, heat issues will never be a concern.

Is the ultimate solution going to be running the headers and cat converter outside the skin? This would require a major redo from BRP. It should not have to be the responsibility of the customer to find solutions to known safety issues from the factory. (ie adding heat tape, heat shields, etc). The Spyder is expensive enough without having to re-engineer it.

I love the look of the ST and the RT. Some have suggested in previous threads that the RT looks dated. Maybe its time for a major skin redo to address internal airflow.

I don't presently own a Spyder. My better half thinks it's too much money to spend for a toy. I have been a member of SL for about three years now. I have been criticized from time to time for posting tough questions without being an owner. I try to do my homework and make intelligent comments.

The Spyder is a wonderfully addictive ride. It is highly technical. I'll see if I can make sense with my comment. I believe its the Japanese that try to combine asthetics with applied engineering. When I look under the skin of the Spyder I see a lot of stuff crammed in a small space in what looks like a hodge podge fashion. The Japanese would have everything modularized and flowing. I realize this is subjective.

Can anyone post some pictures of a naked ST showing the fuel tank, master cylinder, and headers.

Not brake reservoirs... Master Brake Cylinder.

It's on the right side all the way down near the brake pedal, right behind the exhaust.

For some people these aren't just toys, they're primary transportation.

Being without it for weeks while BRP considers their options (ignore it, bandaid it, spend tons of money and fix it right) is more than just being without a toy for a season.

Interestingly enough I demoed an ST limited in May at ASK in Columbus Ohio. I really enjoyed it! If I can get my wife on board with it, I'll be riding sooner rather than later. :joke: :roflblack:

I've ridden other people's Spyders a number of times. One thing I miss from my two wheeler days and from reading on SL is meeting your cyber friends at the rallies like Spyderfest and Maggie Valley. The comeraderie (sp) is like a big family reunion.
 
101F. Couldn't get it over 4 bars. Felt some nominal heat on right foot. I have a 107F day coming up. Will try then too. Some of my sport bike brethren are complaining their bikes are warming up (CBR, FJR) harley friends are indoors.

Wow, Bob, I appreciate the gesture. Thank You. Being short notice and all, we already have plans for this weekend. I googled it. Its only 530 miles and 8.5 hours away. (piece o cake, right?)

I've always thought when and if I get a Spyder, I'd ride to meet up with you somewhere. Part of the fun of owning this machine is meeting the people behind the "icons" on SL. I'd love to go to Spyderfest or Maggie Valley.

As an aside, you know I'm interested in vintage High Fi gear and music in general. I like to brag on my Klipsch , Marantz system. I can move the house off the foundation and sound good at the same time. :thumbup:
